Work Text:
Now normally Nya loved breakfast. Her younger brother, Lloyd would make them everyone in the monastery breakfast. All her family and friends would sit at a table eating breakfast and waking up. It was nice to see everyone in the mornings, mostly because everyone was so busy throughout the day that she might not see them at all.
But as of late Nya hated breakfast. Her mildly peaceful mornings were tainted with her husband's grouchiness. Now they weren't exactly married anymore but they also had not divorced because Nyas husband, Jay had a terrible case of amnesia. After the world nearly ended all of nyas family and friends got separated and scattered across the globe. Jay included. No one had any idea what led up to Jay getting amnesia, even Jay didn't know. He then proceeded to get kidnapped by a kingdom similar to hell but if it was just excessive paperwork and lines. Then he got manipulated by a cult to sacrifice the purity in his soul to their god. Then he ran away and became a mercenary.
So at least to say Jay had a rough few years. Every morning nya could see it clearly. The eyebags, his sickly pale skin, how his hands trembled occasionally, his now red and brown eyes twitch and the fact he reeked of black coffee.
Nya knocked gently on Jay's door, holding a tray of breakfast and a cup of black coffee. She didn't hear a response so she pushed the door open. Jay was curled up on his bed, blankets wrapped messily around him, he was almost more restless in his sleep than he was awake.
“Hey Jay, wake up. Lloyd and Frak made breakfast. There's sprinkles in the pancakes!~” she cooed, sitting beside him on the bed
“What…” Jay groaned sitting up
His eyes barely opened, his brows turned in a permanent angry expression. His pale skin was peppered with freckles, and that silky long hair that flowed on the bed. Nya sputtered, flustered. She’d never seen jay without his high ponytail since his hair was grown out. She abruptly slammed jays tray onto his nightstand, flushed
“OKAY BYE” She weezed, retreated, face bright red
She slid down against the door, face still red and now embarrassed with how she freaked out. The door opened and nya nearly fell back onto Jay's feet. He looked down at her.
“Thank you for the breakfast…” he mumbled
“Oh well it was no issue!” she assured
Jay nodded and retreated back into his room, clearly still on edge around Nya,
“Um Jay..?” Nya asked carefulled
Jay glanced at her, not bothering to speak to her, but expecting to be told what she thought anyways, a good sign from what Nyas learned
“Could I show you around the monastery today? There's a whole bunch of stuff you should see around here. Maybe it'll jog some memories..?” Nya suggested hopefully
“How many times do I need to tell you this?” Jay scoffed loudly, jabbing nyas chest with his finger “i don't know you, i'm not your husband or whatever you think i am! I'm just Jay Walker!”
“Is that a yes or no…?” Nya asks cautiously
“I suppose i'll humor your delusions”Jay sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose
“Okay, alright!” Nya cheered happily “you finish your breakfast then we'll show you everything!”
“I can't wait” Jay spat sarcastically, rolling his tired eyes
Nya smiled and walked away, sure nowadays breakfast was terrible because she couldn't eat her breakfast without the glasses of an exhausted ex mercenary. But today was a good day. Jay agreed to basically tell Nya telling him his memories, which meant Nya could eat her breakfast in bliss rather than anger or longing as usual.
As nya finished her breakfast jay walked up behind her chair and leaned over her like a villain plotting their vengeance.
“Nya, are you done eating yet?” jay asked, eyes flickering with that classic annoyance he's always had
“Yeah lemme finish up my toast first, okay? Then i'll show you every nook and cranny of this monastery” Nya smiled softly
Jay nodded and sat next to her, giving her his usual creepy odd look he'd developed over his long period of time fending for himself
Nya quickly hurried finishing her breakfast, then abandoning her plate at the table and grabbing jays arm and rushing down to the training yard
“This is the training yard, here you, Kai, Cole and Zane learned Spinjitzu from master Wu.” nya gestured around the training course
“Spinjitzu, that spinning thing right?” Jay asked, barely interested
“Yeah it's like a person sized tornado! Its really good in combat, pretty useful, defeated a few major threats with just it” Nya bragged, unsubtly showing off to impress jay
“Yes, i've seen you do it. Its impressive i suppose” Jay shrugged, looking disinterested in nyas ramblings
“Oh and this is where you proposed to me” nya beamed, pointing to a tile on the floor with a heart engraved into it
“I what.” Jay looked over in a mix of horror and confusion
“Oh you asked me to be your Yang,” Nya visibly fawned over the memory
Jay stared silently at the tile, as if trying to remember.
“We were about to take a final stand in what we thought would be our last battle but you proposed right before they burst through the monastery doors” she smiled fondly
Jay looked over the floor, noticing the scratches and dents in the tiles from years of training and countless battles
Nya stood by Jay's side, pulling a small necklace out from under her Gi. “This is my Yang peice. You gave it to me that day”
Jay looked over it, seemingly surprised
“Every Yin and Yang set have a unique lock, meaning that my Yang cant fit with anyone else’s piece but yours” she smiled fondly
“Mine..?” He muttered
“Yeah, you have- had the other piece..” she visibly deflated at the idea of jay not having his piece
Jay grabbed her Yang piece, looking over the ceramic piece
“Do you…still have yours..?” She asked hopefully
“I haven’t seen anything like this till just now” he admitted
Nya looked stunned and a little betrayed. Jay avoided her gaze and focused on the ceramic jewelry
“May I borrow this…?” He asks softly
Nya lit up immediately “Yes, Yes of course! Maybe it’ll help you remember faster!”
Jay nodded as she handed it over and he held it like an injured butterfly
“Do you wanna continue looking around the monastery?” She asked gingerly, brushing her fingers against his
“Oh..uh no…I'm kinda tired.” He muttered
Nya nodded and followed him to his bedroom, watching him hobble from his bad leg
“Is your leg feeling better?” Nya asked, eyeing the cast
“I suppose” he shrugs
Nya watched quietly as he retreated into his bedroom. She sighed and turned away, she should probably make sure kai was awake and had eaten too.
“Are you kidding me?!” Lloyd shouted through the monastery, grabbing nyas attention
“What’s wrong?” Nya asked, sliding into the room, already in her fighting stance and ready to go
“Someone tore up the watering can!” Lloyd waved around the metal can, which had chunks torn out
“Do you think it was Wyldfyre?” She asked, looking over it
“No, she would’ve melted it, not torn out chunks, you need mechanical stuff for that.” Lloyd huffed, glancing at his unwatered plants
“Maybe Zane and Pixel needed the metal?” Nya suggested
“They would’ve found a way to repair it or take it from somewhere else. Who tears up a watering can?!” Lloyd seethed, storming out the room
Nya picked up the can curiously, she had a sneaking suspicion that she knew who had torn up the watering can
“Jay?” Nya called, knocking on his door “Jayyy?”
The door cracked open, revealing jays grumpy face
“Do you know what happened to this watering can?” She asked, holding it up
“I needed the parts” he huffed
“For what?”she asked, looking fed up
“Was just repairing some of my tech” he shrugged
“Nothing dangerous, right?” Nya challenged
“Course not” jay huffed before shutting the door in her face
He was shutting her out again, literally and figuratively. She needed to break his walls down again, she’d manage it. Anything for jay.
Nya groaned in frustration, staring angrily at the burnt pancakes in her pan
“Hey sis…what are you doing?” Kai asked gently
“Trying to make pancakes.” She grumbled
“For lunch? I’m sure Zane or Lloyd will make something-“ kai started
“No, I have to make it!” Nya emphasized
“It’s for jay, isn’t it?” Kai asked knowingly
Nya nodded, throwing the burnt pancake onto a plate filled with similar mistakes
“Your pans too hot” kai hummed, turning the heat down
“Try again.” Kai insisted
Nya tried again, with kais help and thankfully it worked!
“Thanks bro!” Nya beamed, tossing it onto a plate
“Oh Jayyyy~” Nya sang, knocking on his door then opening it
Jay turned back to look at her, his work goggles on, then took a double take and shoved whatever he had been working on into his desk drawer
“Nya, oh umm hello.” Jay stammered, surprised by her presence
Nya placed the plate of pancakes right in the middle of jays desk, making tools roll over in its wake
“I made you lunch!” Nya grinned
“Oh…thank you” jay said softly, looking baffled
Jay quietly ate while Nya watched him wide eyed and clearly waiting for praise
Jay glanced over, clearly unnerved with her gaze
“Thanks…it’s really good” he said, flushed
Nya grinned, flicking the little tuft of hair that stuck out his ponytail, which made jay scrunch up his nose like an annoyed cat
“Okay, I’m gonna go train, you know where to find me~!” Nya winked and left the room just as abruptly as she had entered
Jay snuck into Nyas room while she trained, well more just walked through the door when nobody was looking. He placed a small letter on her wall next to her bed, pinning it to the wall with a shuriken. He nervously sighed and snuck back out, retreating to his room.
Nya dragged herself to her room, she’d just showered and was exhausted from all her vigorous training. She not so gracefully flopped down onto her bed, groaning in frustration into her pillow. She peeked up, wanting a sip of water from her nightstand cup. She noticed the paper pinned to the wall and shot up, snatching it off the wall. Her mind ran a mile a minute. Was Jay running away? Was he gonna leave the monastery or go back to being evil??
She nervously read then relaxed, looking over it confused. He wanted to meet her on the training grounds? That’s…odd.
Nya walked over to the training grounds, anxiously wringing her hands. She peeked out the monastery doors, noticing Jay pacing. He was pacing across the training grounds tiles, biting his lip.
“Jay?” Nya asked, eyes flicking from the candle on the ground to his startled face
“H-Hi Nya..” he smiled nervously, his freckles popping out from his blushing face
“Sooo what’d you want me here for?” Nya asked, eyes drifting down to the small heart carved on the tile between them. Jay reached his hand into his pocket and pulled out a small disk
“Oh gosh I hope I’m doing this right” jay mumbled to himself
“What?” Nya asked, confused
Jay held out nyas yang neckalace and locked it with another peice. It looked like jays old yin peice but it was made of metal
“I…I saw how upset you were when I didn’t have the other peice so I made one…took a while to figure out how to match the locking mechanism-“
Nya dove into jays arms, squeezing him tight
“Thank you! Thank you so much!” She cried tears of joy into his shoulder
Jays face turned bright red and he nodded, patting her shoulder
Nya disconnected their yin and Yang peices and put Jays yin neckalace around his neck. Jay followed suit and smiled softly
Nya woke up to the smell of burning pancakes. She groaned and got out of bed to stop what was likely Cole’s terrible cooking.
“Jay?” Nya asked, suprised to see him making pancakes albeit very poorly
“Oh hi nya” he flustered, clearly frustrated by his terrible cooking skills
“What are you doing?” Nya asked
“Trying to make you pancakes…?” He grinned weakly
Nya grabbed one of the burnt pancakes off the plate, hiding her fear
“Wait Nya don’t-“ jay panicked
Nya bit into the pancake, cringing “I-It’s good…” she managed with tears in her eyes
Jay smiled sympathetically “Thanks..”
