Introductory Potion-Making

Summary:

Buddie Week 2025 - Day 4: Alternate Prompt Supernatural Creatures

Christopher is interested in what Buck does.

Work Text:

Leaning in the doorway to the kitchen, he smiled softly. Two heads of curly hair were bent together over a mortar and pestle as Buck showed his son how to properly grind whatever was in there. How Chris could deal with the smell of what they were making from so close up, he had no idea, but they were both obviously enjoying themselves.

“And then we'll add a pinch of this,” Buck said, suiting words to actions. “It's not exactly the same each time, but using the measuring spoon for a pinch each time actually makes it less effective.”

Chris's face scrunched in confusion as he looked up at the witch. “Why?”

Buck shrugged, his own expression giving away the fact that he did not like that fact any more than the kid did. “I'm not sure. All I've been able to think of is that the way it and the magic interact each time is different and the magic influences how much is in the pinch, but nobody's been able to explain it yet, so….” He shrugged again.

Eddie pushed off the door jamb and stepped into the kitchen, heading for the sink to get a glass out of the dish drainer before going into the refrigerator for the pitcher of sweet tea that he had made for himself. Apparently this was a common potion that most witches made frequently and Buck was replenishing their personal supply of it. Chris, while able to help with the preparation, was unable to help with actually casting any of the magic required since his talents leaned more to the furry variety. Sometimes he wished that his son had not taken after his own nature and had ended up with Shannon's magic instead since he showed so much interest in it and, according to Buck, was already proficient in the preparation of any potion Buck had taught him so far even though he could not make them work.

Buck flicked a distracted smile in his direction as he sat at the end of the table furthest from their mess. “Get everything you needed?”

“Yeah. A couple of bones and that brush you asked for.”

He grinned, watching closely as Chris added the next ingredient and worked on grinding it to a fine powder. Buck had brought up possibly grooming Eddie and Chris during their next full moon, which was happening later that week. “Hear that, bud? He got me a brush.”

Chris laughed brightly as he abandoned the mortar and pestle to cheer. When Buck had brought it up to them, he had been much more enthusiastic than Eddie, wiggling in excitement. Now that it was going to happen, he was going to be even more so until it actually happened and he was able to decide whether he liked it or not.

“Okay, Superman,” Buck said, steering his attention back to what they had been working on. “We can't pause for too long with this one.”

“Oops. Sorry, Buck.”

Eddie's smile was so fond and in love that he was glad Buck was not currently looking at him. He would never be able to live that down, but seeing his best friend, his soon-to-be bonded, showing his son how to make a potion was one of the best things. Couple that with the scents that were softly swirling around the kitchen, it left him unable to keep what he was feeling off his face with the full moon closing in. Everything was drenched in comfort, love, focus, joy, and the faint trace of herbs since he was sitting further away from them.
