I had scarcely ever devoted a serious consideration to the manner in which my life might be concluded—though, in recent months, circumstances had afforded me ample cause to do so—yet, had I indulged in such reflections, I should never have conceived of its termination in this fashion.
Assuredly, it must be accounted an honourable way to die: to surrender oneself in the stead of another—of one cherished beyond all expression. Noble, indeed. Such a sacrifice ought, I think, to possess some small merit in the estimation of Providence.
