Work Text:
Lucy wakes up to the sun rising and sees that Tim is still asleep, which surprises her. They had made the decision to move in together just two months ago. She had pretty much stopped sleeping at her apartment months beforehand and had practically moved a lot of her stuff in anyways.
Today is their one year anniversary. She takes a moment to appreciate the man laying beside her. They’ve faced numerous challenges both personally and professionally since the beginning, but their relationship has only grown stronger. Tim started therapy early on and Lucy has been going as well. It only strengthened the love and what they have between them. “You know, staring at me is endearing but also kind of creepy.”
Lucy lays herself against Tim. “I thought you liked it when I stared at you.” She teases and his hands land on her back. Her shirt has ridden up and she loves the feeling of his hands on her skin.
Tim shrugs. “Maybe I do.” He does love when he catches her staring at work. Tim has caught her staring at him in uniform more than once.
“You know that you do and let’s not pretend that you don’t stare at me practically every day.” Tim shoves his face into Lucy’s chest and she runs her hand through his hair. These quiet moments in the morning are some of Lucy’s favorite. “Happy anniversary Lucy. This year has been nothing short of incredible.”
Lucy leans down and captures Tim’s lips with hers. “Happy anniversary babe. The absolute best year of my life. I can’t wait to see what every year brings to us.” Tim takes Lucy’s hand in his and plays with her fingers. “This has been worth the risk. I was scared and I was skeptical, but you were right, this has been worth it. You have been worth it.” The words flow so easily and Lucy feels Tim’s hands run further under her shirt.
“Thank you for taking this risk with me Lucy. You’ve changed my life in the best ways. I love everything about you.” They both hold each other and enjoy the quiet for a few more moments.
Work has been busier than normal for both of them. Lucy is now Patrol Sergeant and Tim is still kicking ass in Metro. “Stay safe out there, Sergeant Chen.” Hearing that feels new even though it’s been a month. She loves the way it sounds.
“You too, Sergeant Bradford.” Her eyes quickly look over his body and he smirks when he sees her staring. She has quickly proven his point from this morning.
As Tim watches her, his mind starts swirling with ideas. He was disappointed when he realized they were both working on their anniversary, but he has special things planned throughout the day for her. Aaron was more than happy to help Tim out with this. He truly was happy for them and celebrated when he found out they got together.
Aaron walks over and grabs Lucy. There’s already a call that requires their attention. Tim can only hope the day goes as smoothly as it possibly can for both of them. “So.” Aaron grins at her once their call is finished.
“Yes Aaron?” Lucy knows that Tim’s been collaborating with him about something.
“Happy anniversary to you two. I can’t believe it’s already been a year since you two got together.” Aaron smiles over at her and it makes Lucy happy.
“Thanks Aaron. That means a lot. Time has flown by.” Lucy knows she’s glowing with happiness.
Aaron is driving so he pulls into her favorite coffee shop. “I’ll go grab our order.” This has Tim written all over it. Lucy pulls out her phone.
To Tim😘
Aaron is being weird and I’m sure it has everything to do with you. Thank you for my favorite coffee and pastry. I love you.
Her phone dings almost immediately.
From Tim😘
I have no idea what you’re talking about. That’s nice of Aaron to grab you breakfast and coffee. I love you.
Lucy shakes her head and puts her phone away when she sees Aaron walk back out. He hands the coffee and pastry over. “Why thank you. Although I think I should be thanking my boyfriend.” Aaron shrugs and takes a sip of his own coffee.
Another call comes through and it’s eerie that it’s about someone who is being held hostage by a man with a bomb collar. It brings her back to their last case with a bomb collar and how it was really the start of this journey with Tim. “Hey, are you okay?” Aaron brings her out of her thoughts.
“Yeah, I am. Have we made contact with the suspect?” They’re currently outside, trying to make contact with the suspect. “I’ll only talk to the nice lady cop.” He finally says after the negotiator managed to piss the suspect off. Lucy had made contact earlier. Lucy has a sense of pride knowing she made the connection.
“This is Lucy.” She doesn’t feel the need to be so formal. “Is there anything that I can do for you?”
The woman takes a shaky breath. “I want them to finally admit what they did. They’re the reason my baby is gone.” Lucy’s heart breaks. “Can you tell me about them, Sarah?” Her background is coming in handy and she knows that this poor woman has suffered an unimaginable loss.
“My son. He was sick because of what they did. I sued and they used everything that they could to fight me. Even the doctor’s said it was preventable. My baby, Sam, was three. Now, he’s gone and I have lost everything in my life.”
“I agree that they need to pay, Sarah, but I don’t want to see you ruin your life over these idiots.” Aaron stifles back a laugh. “Your life matters too.”
“He was all I had in my life Lucy and now he’s gone.” Her sniffles come over the radio.
“And I am so sorry for what happened. We will make them pay, but this is not the way. I know you think this will make it better, but it won’t.” Lucy has been doing research in hopes that it would help. “I promise that something will be done.”
Lucy hears a scoff and Sarah yelling. “I will not hesitate to let this bomb off.”
“Sarah, please don’t do it. Why don’t I come up there and we can talk?” She agrees and Aaron absolutely hates this idea.
Lucy walks inside and finds Sarah. “Sarah.”
“L..Lucy.” The man she has hostage has a stupid grin off his face and she’s afraid he will be the reason Sarah cracks.
“I’m here Sarah.” Lucy looks at the man. “Stop being an ass for ten seconds or I’ll have you in cuffs before you know what’s happening.” He gulps and she turns back around. “Let him go. He will get what’s coming to him.” Sarah starts crying and Lucy grabs the switch. Metro comes running in and she manages to catch Tim’s eye. He knows that he was doing her job, but he was scared that this suspect wouldn’t listen to reason. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay, Sarah. They will all be punished. I promise.” Lucy glares at the man. Even though Sarah has to be arrested, she’s sent to the hospital to be put on suicide watch. Lucy can only hope that she gets the help she needs.
“Are you okay?” Tim asks quietly.
“I am now.” She looks at him and he grabs her hands which are shaking slightly. “That poor woman.”
“She will get through this. Hopefully, they’ll go easier on her because she didn’t hurt anyone.” Tim squeezes it gently.
Aaron brings her back to the station but not before grabbing lunch. They spent most of their day dealing with this and it’s already past two o’clock. He has grabbed her favorite tacos and is thankful for that.
By the end of shift, Lucy’s beyond exhausted. She is in the locker room when her phone goes off. She smiles when she sees Tim’s name.
From Tim😘
Meet me in our spot in five minutes. Love you beautiful.
Lucy doesn’t respond, but she does quickly freshen up and change out of her uniform. Tim is waiting when she gets outside and sees him sitting in the same spot he was when he asked her out for the first time. “Hi.”
“Hey.” Tim smiles softly. “Please come sit.”
Lucy sits across from him and it’s still hard to believe where this all started a year ago. “What’s going on Tim?”
“This is one of my favorite spots. I know that you loved it because it could be peaceful and you come here when you need a quiet moment. That's why I picked it.” Tim takes her hands in his. “I love you Lucy. I love your smile, your kindness, and how strong you are. I love how far you’ve come in your career, I love you are always thinking of others, and I just love you. I know I’m being repetitive, but I’ll never get tired of saying it.” Tim wipes just a few tears from her face that have fallen. “I had a whole speech planned, but sometimes the best things in life don’t need a plan. This is one of those moments. I want to spend every day of the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?”
Lucy gasps when she hears Tim’s words and sees the ring. The small moonstone is perfect. “Oh my god. Yes, yes I’ll marry you.” She thinks Tim slides the ring on her finger but she only remembers pulling him in for a kiss.
Just over a year ago, she never would have imagined that this would be her life. “Thank you for making me the happiest man alive.”
“You’ve changed my life Tim and I can’t wait to be your wife.” Life couldn’t be any better and they even got married in the same spot just a few months later after a really difficult shift. It had become their favorite place and they shared their biggest moments together.
