Work Text:

L had made an interesting discovery after having Light Yagami imprisoned, not anything that would be helpful for implicating him to be Kira which is annoying but something else… L must’ve not realized before because Light chews mints or gum after but Light Yagami smokes. You’d think L would’ve known that from the surveillance but he didn’t see him smoke at all, nor did the investigator say anything before he died about it… L found it odd and out of place for someone like Light.
Light hadn’t said anything about it while in the cell, assumedly because he knew his dad was watching, but afterwards he’d been allowed to go to a grocery store since he must’ve wanted food. L is not that heartless. When Light went in he grabbed some snacks and some gum but when he got to the counter he noticed Light glanced around to see if anybody was looking, then he asked the clerk for something and they discretely gave him the cigarettes. Not discretely enough for L to not notice.

Now they were handcuffed together, obviously this proved to be frustrating for Light for more reasons than one. Currently L and Light were lying down in the shared bed, L was sitting up and typing away, Light seemed to be fidgety but not in a nervous way or how he got when L was keeping him awake with the loud typing… He hadn’t been able to get alone, L could fill in the blanks that Light probably needed to smoke and he couldn’t since the two of them were chained together and he didn’t want anyone to know.
“You seem awfully… twitchy.” L commented in the low monotone that always carried through his voice, his face was still as emotionless as ever and he was still staring at the screen and typing loudly. He didn’t want to directly comment on it to see if Light would fess up or if he’d just deny it. “I’m tired from your loud typing.” Light grumbled back, obviously irritable. L couldn’t deny that statement was probably true but he knew it wasn’t what was causing the twitching and fidgeting.

“If you need to, we can go out so you can smoke.” L explained calmly, his eyes not straying from the computer while he awaited Light’s response. He seemed surprised at first but then annoyed again, “Of course…” He grumbled again, seeming to understand that L had figured out his little habit. Light looked over at the bag of snacks he’d gotten a little while ago, the one that he had stuffed the cigarettes in, he seemed hesitant. “If I did… You wouldn’t tell my father, right?” Light asked him with hesitance and suspicion in his voice. L already doesn’t tell Mr. Yagami everything concerning Light, certainly not everything. “I would not.” L said simply in a low monotone with that drawn out kinda quality that his voice would usually have.
“Alright. So where is there an outside in this place?” Light asked with confusion as he looked at L while he placed his computer down on the bed and slowly got off of it. L guided him over to what Light thought was just a window but it was actually a glass door leading to a small balcony, L pulled the curtains back and Light quickly grabbed the cigarettes from the bag before they went out there.

They stood outside and Light seemed to realize the same thing L had before they came out here, Light didn’t buy a lighter, but L did. L pulled the lighter out and held it out to Light who actually did seem surprised that he was so prepared, he shouldn’t be. Light quickly pulled a cigarette out and lit it with the lighter, taking a long inhale of the cigarette before exhaling with a relieved sigh. L was curious.
“How long have you smoked, Light?” L asked him with curiosity gleaming in his eyes, most people wouldn’t be able to tell if they just looked at him though. L wondered how long this straight A student that always seemed like such a boring perfect guy (apart from the fact L knew he was definitely Kira) had been smoking seemingly regularly for.

“A year or two.” Light explained quietly and softly, his voice less irritable like before already now that he’d gotten his smoking in. L hummed in thought, Kira has been around for about a year so technically Light could’ve taken it up while he was Kira from stress but if he had for any longer than that then it wouldn’t mean anything… L would keep it in his mind.
L watched as Light looked out at the city with the cigarette in his mouth, L had never smoked or drank before so he always wondered what was so appealing about those little cancer sticks. Light noticed his staring and laughed softly as he took the cigarette from between his lips and now between his index and middle finger. “Do you wanna try, Ryuzaki?” Light asked him curiously with slight amusement behind his eyes, seemingly getting a kick out of having tried something L hadn’t when L was older than him. L looked at the stick with suspicion and curiosity, he had wanted to know why so many people got so addicted… “Alright.” L mumbled quietly as he reached out to take the cigarette, his fingers brushing with Light’s. L put the cigarette to his lips and inhaled slightly before immediately coughing a lot which made Light almost burst out in laughter but he stifled it quickly and not very discretely.

“This tastes… horrible. How do people like these things?” L said with actual disgust in his voice as he passed the cigarette back to Light while still coughing furiously. L couldn’t believe Light liked this stuff. L knew why people got addicted to them and he did know why people liked them, apparently it wasn’t for the taste but to “take the edge off” or “destress” but L still couldn’t understand how people could stand that awful taste.
Light laughed a bit more obviously at L’s comment, he took another drag as he looked over at L who was almost done with his coughing fit. “It’s just helpful to destress.” Light told L softly with a certain almost… vulnerability to it. L could understand how someone like Light might be slightly stressed, his parents don’t seem the most attentive and obviously he had the grades that must’ve been expected of him…
L felt mildly bad for Kira. L looked over at Light who was looking off into the distance, taking a drag every few seconds. He seemed more calm now, less fidgety… He almost seemed kinda peaceful.

L felt himself moving slightly closer to Light, just for the chain to be less strained of course. Light glanced over at him curiously, not understanding why L moved closer to him when L thought he was a serial killer… L was still looking at him like he was dissecting him, it was always pretty unnerving but also comforting in a way with how well L could just see him. Light noticed how black his eyes were, he could almost see his reflection in them, they were like black voids that replaced eyes.
L noticed how bright Light’s eyes were, they were amber and the lights of the city reflected in them… Light felt himself leaning down a bit, getting closer, taking the cigarette from his mouth, accidently glancing down at L’s pale and thin lips. L could see Light lean down and he didn’t move away, he just looked up at him from his hunched over posture…

Light didn’t understand why he kissed him, and he CERTAINLY didn’t understand why Ryuzaki kissed back. He lingered there and Light could feel Ryuzaki bringing his hand up to his hair and pulling him closer, keeping him there. Light felt his eyes flutter closed, he wasn’t sure if Ryuzaki had closed his, he doubted it. That thought was kind of invigorating… Light didn’t understand why he was enjoying this so much.
Light had a bit of experience, he obviously had to kiss Misa because she was his girlfriend. Oh shit. That’s right, Light has a girlfriend. He can’t be doing this especially with someone who suspects him of being a murderer and someone who locked him up for over two weeks… So he should pull away. He needs to do that.

…He doesn’t even really like her though? Misa was the one who said she fell in love with him, he doesn’t owe her anything. He could just relish in this feeling, L was really good at kissing, honestly better than Misa which is kind of a shock. Misa was always so careful as if she thought he’d break if she kissed him too hard, which he didn’t mind since he didn’t exactly like kissing her… L was so much more, not rough, but he wasn’t gentle about it and it felt good.
Light almost forgot about his cigarette before Ryuzaki pulled away the slightest bit which caused Light to open his eyes slightly to protest when Ryuzaki spoke, “You should put that out.” L said plainly as his wide eyes that were definitely not closed before looked at the cigarette in Light’s hand. Light quickly put it out against the railing and threw it off the balcony before looking back at L who hadn’t taken his eyes off him, it made his heart speed up a bit which he couldn’t say has ever happened before…

L was so intrigued by the expressions Light made while they kissed, they were like nothing L had seen before. He wanted to see more. He leaned back in after Light had put out the cigarette and watched as Light closed his eyes again and L didn’t, he was so interested in how he looked like this… His breath smelled like smoke, would he taste like it? L wanted to know.
