Chapter Text

You’ve been working as a cashier at a small convenience store for about a month. It was going well for a while before the boy we all know and love, Kevin Spencer, started showing up. Kevin was in the same class as you, he just barely showed up to school tho. The days when he did show up, he either got detention, which he always skipped, or he just left in middle of the school day after probably catching the school on fire.

Kevin either was lost when he stumbled into the store, in search of the pharmacy where he stole cough syrup from, or he was there to steal snacks. You’re surprised you hadn’t got fired yet from all the loss the store had done by now, only because of one person.

It was 11PM as the drunk boy, Kevin, stumbled into the store. The pharmacy had closed an hour ago so there was no way he was searching for that. Or maybe he just had his own time zone from all the alcohol and cough syrup he drank.

He swayed around for a second, looking through what the shelves had. After a minute of just standing there, he moved to the counter where you were sitting, half asleep.

For a while you two stared at each other, the smell of alcohol and cigarettes caught your nose and you couldn’t help but scrunch your face a little. As he stood there… or tried to stand there, he looked around quickly before again turning to look at you.

“Cigs.”

First of all, you had never really heard him talk. Second of all, you noticed Kevin had a lazy eye which seemed to dart to the side now and then. Besides all that, you got him the cigs.

“That’s 9.99…” you muttered lazily, Kevin cocked his head to the side like he was confused.
Did this guy only know how to count to seven?

”Ten.” You said like you were talking to a little kid.
Kevin would then start digging through his pockets before pulling out a crumbled up 10 dollar bill. He was about to give it to you, sliding it up to you on the counter, then his eyes quickly moved behind you. What was he looking at?

You raised an eyebrow at him before turning around, biggest mistake you ever made. There wasn’t anything behind you.
That’s when you heard very quick foot steps and the store’s door open, Kevin was gone.

Jesus. For a chain-smoking alcoholic he for sure was quick.

You were left groaning out of annoyance, how can you even fall for that. It wasn’t like that hadn’t been done before. Maybe it was just the lack of sleep you’ve obtained through the shitty cashier job.

Next day you could only pray Kevin wasn’t going to show up. Only for your prayers to not be answered. It was later than yesterday, 1AM. You had one more hour to go until your shift was over.

For your absolute luck, you already saw the bright orange shirt through the store’s window. This time you promised to yourself that you wouldn’t fall for the trick he did yesterday.

Kevin once again stumbled into the store with a cigarette in his mouth, unlike yesterday. It probably wasn’t allowed to smoke in the store but clearly, the staff also ignored that. You guessed that from the smell of weed in the staff bathroom.

Kevin seemed less drunk this time, still drunk tho. He looked around again as he was making his way to the counter, before he could do that he seemed to stumble on his own feet and fall right onto his face, letting out a quiet groan. He seemed to quickly recover as he got up and just rubbed his face a little, fixing his cap’s position.

This time he actually managed to stay up pretty well as he came to the counter. The same smell of cigarette and alcohol on him hitting you like a brick wall. He was again asking for cigs. You hesitantly gave him a pack, telling him the same price as yesterday and then looking at him go through his pockets again. The same 10 dollar bill.

You couldn’t just let him go through with this so, you chose to speak up.

“Could you not steal this time?” You asked, again tired as you spoke. He didn’t give you any answer but instead, you noticed the sides of his lips curve into a smile. You didn’t even know the guy could do that. Usually he just had the empty look like there was no thoughts in his head.

Little did you know that in Kevin’s head, Allen the magic goose was telling him to make a run for it already and if not that, “ask the pretty chick onto a date with you, lunatic.” Or something like that, Kevin didn’t really listen this time.

Kevin’s shaky hand once again slid the bill to you. You were already ready to take it from him before he pointed behind you. Of course you knew what he was doing so you didn’t even move a muscle as you kept staring at him, with the same empty look he usually gave you.

Yesterday, you had thought about a plan how you’d try to catch him, it was more like a fantasy to jump him down onto the ground. You’d jump over the counter as he’d start running away and then you’d take the cigarettes from him, you’d get some extra pay and maybe the police would catch him, you’d get a medal and…. Kevin was gone.

“God damn it Kevin.” You mumbled to yourself. You had spaced out thinking about jumping the guy. How can you keep letting this happen. You could only see the bright orange shirt of his as he ran back into the dark streets.

After running out of the store where you worked at, he had stuffed the cigarette pack into his pocket. He had two other packs already. One he had before he started stealing from you and the other one which he stole from you yesterday. Now why did he need three packs of cigarettes?
He didn’t. He just wanted to see you and enable his fantasy of marrying you.
Tho he didn’t mind having some extra cigarettes, and for free?
He was living the dream.
Maybe someday he could ask you on a date in hopes of not getting rejected and just maybe, share one of his cigs with you. Did you even smoke? He didn’t know but did he care? No. He just had to find a better way to get closer to you. Maybe if he stole something from you and returned it like he found it, maybe you’d fall in love with him and have a happy family with him some day.
