Work Text:

There's a particular brand of self-loathing one must possess to still be in love with the man who gambled away your house and savings. It's Anna's belief -- something she still had the capability of doing, thank you very much -- that she should want very little to do with Harry, aside from the mutual interest of co-parenting Daisy.

She doesn't know whether to smile or frown at the moment, watching from the window.

One day, she'll be looking out at New York City, wondering when her life had changed. Wondering how magic had transformed her life through semi-supernatural means. Or perhaps it was just Harry, who cared for her and Daisy so much that they were sent away... it must have killed Harry to do that...

But that day isn't today. Today is a few days before their wedding anniversary and Anna is throwing herself into work, into the cases she works on because she was a very successful lawyer type and she didn't need Harry. Logically, she didn't need Harry. Rationally, she didn't need Harry. But... part of her wanted Harry.

Which, she is going to cure with a date in a few days.

It's not the same though, is it? To go from buying a house with someone who's known you for years to buying dinner with someone you haven't even known for a month.

The thoughts that linger... Harry's coming over to take Daisy to the park. Have father-daughter time.

Anna doesn't protest, it's not her job to stand in the way between Daisy and her father.

Her phone buzzes. She looks down, then looks out the window.

Harry's on his mobile, staring up at her. Trying to wave.

From the window, she can see him from a distance that's safe. She doesn't have to look at his charming eyes or feel the way she feels their mutual heartache. From a distance, she doesn't have to remember the sound of his voice which has told her he loves her twice, three times over a single drink.

Did she mean to shut him out? No, of course not. But is it better that way?

No.

Her cell rolls to voicemail. Harry tries to get her attention again.

She's stared off, ignored his calls... what's gotten into her?

She waves back and steps away, through the halls with packed boxes because that part of her life is over, isn't it?

If she stands in this hall with her old life behind her, she maybe it will be alright. Maybe she won't fall in love again.

Every moment with Harry is falling in love again and she needs to stop.

Logically, she doesn't need Harry. Rationally, she doesn't need Harry. But if part of her wanted him... well... she's a lawyer. Sue her.

Notes:

It's been a second since I watched Lucky Man so sooooo sorry if I've missed a note or messed up a detail! Someone on AO3 mentioned a lack of Anna Clayton fics so I felt the need to answer the call.
