Chapter 1: "Mistake"

Chapter Text

Lucy walked out of the breakroom, now in full view of the Bullpen. Tim was booking there suspect and she had taken some time to get a quick snack.

"Chen!"

Lucy turned around, standing outside his office was Sargent Grey. He wiggled his finger beckoning her toward him. She tried not to think about her coworkers whispering, but she couldn't help but replay every mistake she made ever. She had just graduated to long sleeves, and Tim had made it very clear that she could lose that "privilege" as he called it.

"Chen, this arrived from the chief for Stanton."

Her blood boiled at hearing his name, sure for now he was only openly cruel to Jackson, but he had given her a few nasty looks when he thought she couldn't see.

"And here, he'll need this." He spoke, pulling a letter opener out of his drawer. The blade was about 8in and the handel was plain, no engraving.

"Yes, sir." She spoke as she turned to leave, making sure to be careful with the sharp edge.

"Boot!" Tim yelled

"Uhhh.."

"I said 5 minutes! What part of that didn't you get!"

"Uhhh....Sargent Grey asked me to take this to Stanton."

"Why you?" He spoke, noticing the sealed envelope and letter opener

"I'm the first rookie he saw?" She guessed

"Right...I'm going to restock our shop, you better be done when I am!"

"Yes sir!"

She walked toward Stanton's desk, already rehearsing what she would say, he seriously gave them a bad feeling. Nolan didn't seem to notice but even before Jackson had come to her, she noticed how he seemed to look down on the women, and the people of color.

"Hey, Officer Stanton." She spoke, holding out the letter and opener.

"Chen..." He spoke with a tone that made her skin crawl, she shivered as goose bumps formed on her exposed arms.

"Uhh....Message from the chief, Sir." She blurted out, forced smile on her face

"I see..." Stanton acknowledged through pursed lips.

He took the letter and opener, in a fluid motion he had the letter open, leaving her standing there awkwardly, looking at her watch she saw Tim was probably done. "Great, now i'll be doing pushups after every call" she thought as she tapped Stanton on his shoulder to try an excuse herself.

It happened so fast, he flinched, letter opener still in hand he plunged it into her stomach without thinking. Time froze, her breath hitched as she felt blood pooling in her throat, coming out in choked gasps. Her navy uniform turning dark as blood escaped her wound. Her hands instinctively went to her stomach as she heard his voice.

"Boot! I said when I'm done you better be ready!" His voice sounded distant as her strength faded

Her eyes stuttered toward Stanton, whos slight smirk will haunt her like Caleb.

"Boot!" Tim yelled, walking up behind her, unable to see was going on

"Huhhhh" She choked, as her blood dripped onto the tile floor, echoing slightly.

She doubled over, legs going out a moment later. The weakness betrayed her more than the pain as strong arms wrapped around her chest. She felt herself being lowered down. A distant voice called for help.

"Chen, stay with me!"

Her eyelids felt heavy as more blood filled her airway.

"Can't.....breathe!" She gasped as blood bubbled against her teeth

"I know, I know just stay with me!" He ordered as he lifted her head on his thigh, tilting it back to try and take some pressure of her throat.

"Lucy!"

"Guhhhh!"

"You don't get to do that boot, you don't get to die here!" Tim cried, blinking back tears, jaw clenched, worry on every part of his face

"Doug....he....he did....he...."

She didn't get a chance to finish as her eyelids slid closed and she saw only darkness.
