Please Call Me Back

Summary:

Tsukishima, reserved and sharp-minded, would never lower himself to call his ex-boyfriend, Kuroo Tetsurou, and beg him to return. Yet after one drunken night with friends, he wakes to an unexpected message from Kuroo himself.

Work Text:

A ton of beers and one bottle of alcohol.

It’s a mess. Hinata is sprawled on the couch, mouth open and snoring. How did Kageyama even end up at the floor, the futon is clearly right next to him. Yamaguchi is asleep at the kitchen counter. There are only four people who drank last night, how did it even get this messy. Beer cans on the floor and the bottle of alcohol is being hugged by Kageyama.

Tsukishima closes his eyes, he woke up with his head throbbing madly. All he remembers is that his friends—he still cannot believe that he counts the freak duo as his friends, they decided to come at Tsukishima’s apartment at nine in the evening with beers and alcohol. All because Tsukishima and Kuroo broke up.

Yeah, He guess it still stings but a month had already passed by. Tsukishima tries to drown himself in his studies to distract himself but to no avail at night when he is alone, Tsukishima remembers Kuroo the most.

Tsukishima takes his phone out to take a photo of his dumb friends. Unfortunately as if Kageyama has a third eye, his eyes open. “What-” Tsukishima still manages to snap a picture, Kageyama’s mouth open and eyes half open.

“Oh yeah. I’m sure Oikawa-san will love this.” that seemed to wake Kageyama up at the mention of his boyfriend. He stands up, letting the bottle go and tries to take the phone from Tsukishima.

“You better not!”

The two chase each other around the couch, Kageyama trips, stepping on a can of beer. Kageyama elbows Hinata’s stomach, waking him up. “Oof–” Hinata groans, holding his stomach.

What a way to start a Friday morning eh.

The two starts bickering on who knows what, Yamaguchi is still sound asleep at the kitchen counter and Tsukishima lets out a smirk as he sends a picture of Kageyama to Oikawa who responds immediately with a ‘Tobio-chan~’ and tons of heart eyes emoji.

Tsukishima rolls his eyes and scrolls on his phone. Which maybe a bad decision, he comes a cross a post from Bokuto with Kuroo and Akaashi on the first picture. Seems like they went to a party, he should have scrolled. He swipes the next picture and the next and the next until he saw something.

It’s as if someone poured a bucket of cold water on him. The picture mainly involves Bokuto and Akaashi smiling drunkenly. At the back, Kuroo is with the person Tsukishima is jealous of and is one of the reason the two broke up.

"Stupid," he whispers under his breath, a dull ache blooming in his chest.

Yamaguchi suddenly appears next to him. “Hey.”

“You scared me.” he said, clutching his chest as his heartbeat slowed.

“Sorry, Tsukki.” Yamaguchi smiles sheepishly.

“What are you looking at?” Tsukishima didn’t even try to move his phone away from his sight. His friend opens his mouth to say something but Tsukishima shakes his head slowly.

“A month has only passed by, he already made a move on her.” Tsukishima clutches his phone angrily, a frown plastered on his face.

“Lets not jump to conclusions Tsukki, maybe–”

“Don’t even try to defend him.”

Yamaguchi sighs at his childhood bestfriend, Tsukishima is someone who doesn’t easily change his mind. It is something Yamaguchi had trouble dealing with growing up until they got to college. Before Tsukishima and Kuroo broke up, Yamaguchi was there listening to his bestfriend’s rants. His growing jealousy towards Kuroo’s new friend and missing date nights with Kuroo.

Yamaguchi didn’t know they broke up until he heard it from Akaashi. Akaashi filled him the details that the two broke up over the phone and the reason is that they both didn’t have time for eachother anymore and Tsukishima’s jealousy.

Drinking nights became a routine every Friday night. Kageyama even mentioned that Oikawa whines about Kageyama spending more time with them than with his own boyfriend. “Tsukki, why don’t we just eat.”

The four ends up eating noodles in the morning. Hinata is scrolling on his phone while slurping his noodles. “Mmf! Bokfu-shan–” Hinata chokes on his noodles.

“Are you stupid?” Tsukishima says but continues on eating.

Hinata reaches for water and chugs it down. “None of you decided to help me?! What if I died?!” Kageyama glares at him.

“It was your fault.”

“Bakeyama!”

“Stupid!”

Tsukishima couldn’t help but wonder how Oikawa never seemed to get jealous of the two. Perhaps it’s the same for Kageyama with Iwaizumi. Yamaguchi shushes the two for being loud making his head ache. “Anyway, Daichi-san is throwing another party and we’re invited!” Hinata exclaimed, practically bouncing on his toes, his voice bursting with excitement.

“Oh? For what? And who else is coming.” Yamaguchi asks.

“The old Karasuno team he says. Probably Suga-san’s welcome home party.” Hinata explains, setting his phone down.

“The party is being held tonight.” He adds and takes another bite of his noodles. Tsukishima exhales slowly. The way he’s been drinking lately, it’s as if alcohol itself has started to replace the blood in his veins. He promises to himself that he will stop drinking after this party.

A knock at the door interrupts their conversation. Tsukishima rises from his seat and pulls the door open, revealing Oikawa on the other side. “Yahoo!” Oikawa greets with his trademark grin. “I came to pick up Tobio-chan. It’s time for him to come home to me.” His smile is both playful and possessive, the kind that only Oikawa could pull off.

It may not be obvious but Oikawa is very possessive when it comes to Kageyama. “I literally said I’ll be home after breakfast, plus our apartment is only a building away.” Kageyama stands next to Tsukishima.

“I’ll see you guys later.”

-

Tsukishima takes another long swig of beer. It’s been an hour since they got here, and he can no longer keep track of how many bottles he’s emptied. He makes his way to the sofa where everybody is and takes a seat next to Kageyama who is busy typing something on his phone. “Something wrong?” Tsukishima asks.

Kageyama hums. “It’s just Oikawa-san. Whining about me not at home again.” He slips his phone out of sight and takes a long drink of his beer.

“You look drunk.” Kageyama comments.

“I am drunk.”

Tanaka suddenly appears behind them and it seems like he is really drunk. “Oi, Tsukishima. I saw Kuroo earlier, he looks terrible.” With the mention of Kuroo’s name, Tsukishima instantly frown and a familiar ache settles in his heart.

“What about it?” He takes a swig of his beer.

“He looks like-” Tanaka is cut off by Nishinoya who puts a hand on his mouth to shut him up.

“I think you had enough alcohol now my man.” Nishinoya pushes him away from Tsukishima, throwing him a smile and a apologetic look. Tsukishima sighs.

“What really is the reason you two broke up?” Kageyama asks, his voice blunt, though his eyes search for an answer.

Tsukishima takes a deep breath. “I was jealous. The sprained ankle incident between them was my last straw.”

There is nothing wrong helping a friend. But Kuroo’s reaction and actions made him think otherwise, and Tsukishima couldn’t handle it anymore. It was his last straw, he reasons to Kuroo that there were other people to help her. Kuroo explains that his friend wasn’t comfortable with other people.

“How…” Tsukishima hesitates at first. “How come you don’t get jealous of Iwaizumi-san and Oikawa-san?”

Kageyama chuckles. “Oh it was a problem at first alright. Especially with me and Hinata also.” It feels like the first time in ages that Tsukishima and Kageyama are talking without snapping at each other. Maybe it was the alcohol.

“I just trusted Tooru and he trusted me. It may sound simple but it’s hard.” Kageyama answers simply, his tone flat as always.

Tsukishima lets out a chuckle, “Who knew you were capable of giving an advice.” Kageyama glares at him.

Hey.

Kageyama shoots a glare, sharp at first, yet the faint twitch at the corner of his mouth betrays that he’s only joking. “What did Kuroo-san say?”

“About what?”

“Was it a mutual decision?” That made Tsukishima stop. It really wasn’t a mutual decision, Tsukishima ended the call before Kuroo could say anything–afraid that he might change Tsukishima’s mind. When it comes to Kuroo, Tsukishima is weak.

Kageyama knew the answer already based on Tsukishima’s silence. “I see. You’re stupid.” He comments, drinking another beer.

Tsukishima instantly frowns. “I’m not. It’s what he wanted anyway.” He says sternly.

“You didn’t even let him explain his side.” Kageyama answers back. The two lock eyes for a moment, both of their brows furrowed in silent challenge. Tsukishima sighs, taking a long drink of his beer before switching to some strong alcohol.

“It’s already done anyways.” He mumbles but enough for Kageyama to hear.

“Oi! Tsukishima leave some for us!” Nishinoya jumps on Tsukishima’s back trying to reach for the bottle.

Yamaguchi watches his bestfriend down who knows how many shots already. Tsukishima looks too wasted already, his blonde hair a mess, glasses askew, and the smell of alcohol is stinking to his clothes.

“I think you had enough already, Tsukishima-kun.” Sugawara smiles softly, reaching for the cup. Tsukishima shakes his head, saying that he is fine and that he can handle it. All he wants is to erase the sting of hurt that keeps finding its way back. Tsukishima feels his eyes burn.

“I’m fine, Suga-san.” Tsukishima stands up and leaves the room to get some fresh air.

“Ah! Tsukki!” Yamaguchi stands up to follow him.

“I’m just going to get some fresh air.” He waves his friend off. Tsukishima finds himself sitting at Daichi’s front porch. His vision is already blurry and his head is spinning.

How does he get Kuroo back?

Tsukishima takes his phone out and scrolls down to his gallery, he didn’t have the courage to delete their pictures yet. Tsukishima and Kuroo started dating back in his final year of high school, Kuroo was there when he graduated highschool. The photo captures Kuroo’s familiar smirk and his perpetually messy bedhead, while beside him, Tsukishima offers a rare, gentle smile to the camera, holding a bouquet of flowers.

Tsukishima doesn’t know how long he looks at the picture before he feels himself crying. His headache didn’t help. “Who cares anyway.” He whispers and heads to his contacts to call Kuroo. Who cares if he calls Kuroo and begs him to come back? It’s clear Tsukishima was at his worst after their breakup.

It took only two rings until he hears his Kuroo’s voice. “Kei?” The sound of Kuroo saying his name once more was enough to bring fresh tears to his eyes. Sobs were heard.

“Hey, are you okay? Where are you?” Kuroo’s voice full of concern and worry. Tsukishima hears the scrape of the chair against the floor as Kuroo rises to his feet.

“I-I’m okay. It’s just…” Tsukishima stops to take a deep breath. “I can’t take this anymore.”

“What are you…saying?”

“Ending things with you was a mistake.” Tsukishima admits, voice low, heavy with regret.

Silence fills the air. Tsukishima can hear his heart beating loudly, expecting and waiting for Kuroo to just end the call. “Moonshine, I never wanted to end things with you.” Kuroo’s speaks softly, something that calms Tsukishima down.

“Where are you right now?” Kuroo asks. He can hear Kuroo shuffling and opening his closet.

Tsukishima sits up straight, “Hey! Wait! I…I’m drunk right now. Can we please–”

“So… you’re saying you called me because you were drunk?” Kuroo’s voice sounded serious and hurt.

“No! Wait, that’s not what I meant.” Tsukishima closes his eyes out of frustration.

“Do you mean it? That you regret ending things between us.”

“Yes, yes I mean it.” Tsukishima sighs. There was silence for a moment.

“Can I come so we can talk?” Kuroo asks.

Tsukishima almost said yes until he realize what he looks right now…and he reeks of alcohol. “Uhm, I can’t right now…I look like shit.” Kuroo chuckles and Tsukishima’s heart does a flip.

“I see, I’ll see you tomorrow then Kei.”

And with that, the call is over. A groan escapes Tsukishima as he hides his phone before stumbling back inside, determined to get wasted all over again.

-

Sunlight stings his eyes, forcing him awake. The pounding in his head is all too familiar, and he can’t help but frown. Tsukishima doesn’t know how he got home to his apartment, but at least he is in one piece. His phone keeps on dinging on the bedside table, he reaches for it with irritation. “Who the hell texts at–” He pauses to check the time. “Nine in the morning.”

He hopes this person trips for spamming his phone at nine in the morning. “What…” His eyes widen at the person who messaged him.

Tetsu:

Hey, I’m outside.

“WHAT!” Tsukishima quickly stands up as he hears a knock on his door. Rushing into the bathroom to at least look like a decent human being. He scrolls up to their chat history and he stops. “I called Kuroo?” The chat history contains that Kuroo will come at his apartment in the morning.

He quickly brushes his teeth and puts on some cologne. He swings the door open to reveal Kuroo. “Hi.” Kuroo greets him with his signature smirk.

With a stiff motion, Tsukishima steps aside to let him in. Awkwardness hangs between them, thick and unspoken, as he takes in the sight of Kuroo standing there as if no time had passed. “Kei.”

“Hmm.”

“Relax. Let’s just talk for a second and…whatever your decision is again.” Kuroo takes a deep breath. “I’ll respect it.”

“I meant what I said last night.” Tsukishima doesn’t know if he should call Kuroo by his first name again. Tsukishima takes a seat on his couch and Kuroo follows.

“I just thought you didn’t want us anymore.” Tsukishima starts, voice already wavering. He looks at anywhere but Kuroo’s eyes.

“Why would you think that? Is this about her, Kei?” Tsukishima didn’t answer.

“Kei, It’s only you. You have nothing to worry about.” Kuroo reaches for his hand. “I’m sorry, I should have understood what you felt.”

“I suppose you should have.” Tsukishima finally meets Kuroo’s eyes. “I’m sorry I ended things between us.”

“Do you still want to–” Tsukishima cuts him off. “I wouldn’t have called if I didn’t.”

Kuroo grins as he engulfs Tsukishima in a hug, pressing his face into the curve of his neck to breathe in his natural scent. Tsukishima flushes scarlet. “I haven’t even bathed yet!” he sputters, struggling against Kuroo’s arms.

“I don’t mind.”

Tsukishima sighs, accepting his defeat and raises his hand to Kuroo’s bedhair. “Still messy as ever Tetsu.”

“You love my hair.”

Tsukishima’s lips curve into a rare, gentle smile as he reaches for his phone. “Tetsu,’” he calls softly, coaxing Kuroo’s attention. They both lean toward the camera, sharing a quiet smile meant only for each other. Just as the shutter clicks, Kuroo shifts, stealing a quick kiss against Tsukishima’s cheek. Tsukishima’s smile lingers, eyes fluttering shut, warmth flooding his chest.
