Work Text:

The mission was a catastrophic success. They had stopped Eggman’s latest doomsday device, but the cost… the cost was etched into the very air. The facility they’d just cleared was a charnel house, filled with grotesque experiments, flickering monitors displaying unspeakable images, and the chilling, metallic tang of what Eggman had left behind.

Sonic, usually quick with a quip or a triumphant grin, felt a leaden weight in his stomach. This wasn’t a standard robot fight. This was a nightmare made real.

He turned to Shadow, expecting the usual grim stoicism, perhaps a muttered comment about Eggman’s depravity. But Shadow wasn’t moving. He was standing in the center of the main lab, surrounded by ruined equipment, his back to Sonic. Utterly, unnervingly still.

”Shadow? Hey, buddy, we gotta go. G.U.N’s on their way, and I don’t want to explain why a lab full of freaky experiments just exploded.” Sonic tried for his usual easy tone, but his voice hitched. Something was wrong. Terribly wrong.

Shadow didn’t respond. He didn’t even twitch. His quills, usually bristling with latent energy, seemed dull, lifeless.

Sonic cautiously approached, his heart pounding a nervous rhythm against his ribs. He circled around, stopping in front of Shadow.

And then he saw it.

Shadow’s eyes, those normally fierce, ruby-red pools of focused intensity, were wide open, dilated, and utterly, profoundly empty. They stared through Sonic, through the ruined lab, through the very fabric of reality itself. His muzzle was slack, his jaw slightly ajar, as if stuck mid-breath. His body was stiff, unresponsive.

It wasn’t a trance. It wasn't shock. This was something far, far worse.

”Shadow?” Sonic whispered, reaching out a tentative hand, not quite daring to touch. “What… what’s wrong? What did you see?”

Shadow didn’t hear him. Didn’t see him. His mind was elsewhere, far away from the horrors of Eggman’s lab, far away from the present.

-

The cold. Always the cold.

He was back on the Ark. The sterile, metallic walls stretched endlessly. The whirring of machines was a constant lullaby of dread. Maria was there, a flickering ghost-like presence. She was smiling, then weeping, then turning away.

He tried to reach her, but his limbs wouldn’t obey. He was strapped down. Again. The bright lights burned, searing into his optic nerves. The voices were muffled, distorted, like speaking through thick water.

He was floating. Disconnected. His body was a distant hum, a faint ache he couldn’t quite pinpoint. The pain was real, but it wasn’t his pain. It belonged to the figure on the table, the one being poked and prodded.

”Oh horror, oh horror, what did you see?”

The voice was Maria’s, a desperate, tearful whisper that echoed in the vast emptiness. He wanted to tell her. He wanted to scream. He wanted to claw his way back to her, to protect her, to tell her he was sorry. But the words wouldn’t form. His throat was constricted. His mouth was dry.

He saw the reflection in a chrome surface: a creature. Twisted. Monstrous. Not him. Never him. But the image persisted, burning into his non-existent retina.

He was falling. Down, down, through endless tunnels of light and shadow, past forgotten memories, past shattered promises. There was no pain, no fear, only profound, suffocating emptiness. He was a spectator in his own demise, watching himself unravel from great distance.

Maria’s laughter. Maria’s tears. The gunshots. The freefall. The impact. All played on a loop, disconnected from any sensation, any feeling. It was just noise. Just images. Just… nothing.

He was trapped outside of himself, peering in at the broken parts, but unable to reassemble them. The horror was too vast, the pain too immense to fully re-engage with. Better to be here, in the quiet, numb void.

Sonic’s heart was pounding. Shadow wasn’t just zoned out; he was gone. His eyes were dry, unblinking, fixed on a point far beyond the concrete walls. This wasn’t the kind of trauma response he was used to. No lashing out. No furious escape. Just… absence.

”Shadow!” Sonic shouted, louder this time, stepping closer, finally laying a tentative hand on Shadow’s shoulder.

Shadow didn’t even flinch. His quills were cold, stiff. It was like touching a statue.

Sonic felt a cold dread creep through him. This was the Ultimate Life Form, the rival, the one who never broke. And he was utterly shattered. Whatever horrors Eggman had brewing here, Shadow had seen something that had simply pulled the plug on his conscious mind.

”Hey, come on, buddy, talk to me!” Sonic pleaded, his voice cracking with genuine fear. He squeezed Shadow’s shoulder, trying to impart some of his own solid presence. “Where are you, Shad? Come back to me!”

Sonic’s gaze swept the room, desperately looking for anything that could have triggered this. An old monitor, still faintly glowing with a schematic. A twisted metal cage. A row of vials. He didn’t know what Shadow had seen, but he knew it had to be something profoundly tied to the Ark, to Maria, to the experiments.

He remembered a fleeting comment Rogue once made: ‘Sometimes he just… leaves. Like his mind checks out for a bit.’ Sonic had dismissed it as melodrama. Now he understood.

Sonic carefully positioned himself directly in Shadow’s line of sight, trying to intercept that empty gaze. He knelt, then slowly placed his hands on either side of Shadow’s face, gently forcing him to focus.

“Shadow,” Sonic whispered, his voice thick with unshed tears, forcing him to be the anchor. “Look at me. Look at my eyes, Shadow. Not what’s in your head. Look at me.”

He stared into those empty red eyes, pouring every ounce of his energy, his worry, his unwavering presence into his gaze.

“Whatever you saw, it’s not real anymore. Whatever they did, it’s over,” Sonic insisted, his thumbs gently brushing Shadow’s cheekbones. “You’re safe. You’re here. With me. We’re getting out. I won’t let them touch you again.”

He kept talking, a steady, low stream of words, anchoring Shadow to the present, to his voice, to his touch. “It’s Sonic. We’re in Eggman’s lab. It’s trashed. G.U.N is coming. We need to leave. Come on, Shadow. Fight with me. You’re the Ultimate Life Form. You don’t give up. Not ever.”

He felt the faintest tremor run through Shadow’s body. A flicker of something– recognition? – in the depth of those vacant eyes. It was like trying to pull someone back from the edge of a vast, invisible chasm.

“Just… just one step, Shadow,” Sonic urged, his own voice hoarse. “Just look at me. Tell me you’re here. Tell me you hear me.”

The red eyes, so long empty, slowly, painfully, seemed to gain a fraction of their depth. The pupils constricted, just a hair. A single, silent tear, hot and desperate, escaped the corner of Shadow’s eye, tracing a path down his cheek.

It was the first sign of him truly returning.

Shadow blinked, a slow, agonizing movement. His jaw worked, and he finally spoke, his voice a raw, broken whisper, thick with the weight of the horrors he had just re-expierenced.

“Oh horror, oh horror… what did you see?”

He wasn’t asking Sonic. He was asking himself. He was asking the void he had just returned from.

Sonic’s heart broke. He didn’t answer the question. He knew this was the moment Shadow needed permission to shatter. He leaned in close, his voice thick but firm.

“It doesn’t matter, Shad. Not anymore,” Sonic whispered, his breath warm against Shadow’s cheek. “It’s done. And it’s okay. You hear me? We’ll make it alright to come undone.”

He pulled Shadow into a tight, fierce hug, burying his face in Shadow’s quills, holding onto him like he was the last thing in the crumbling universe.

“Just come back. Just be here. I’ve got you. I’m right here.”

He felt Shadow’s arms slowly, tentatively, come up, gripping his jacket with a desperate, crushing strength. The Ultimate Life Form was back, shattered but present, clinging to the only anchor he had left in the face of unspeakable, unseen horror. And Sonic, for the first time, truly understood the depth of the burden Shadow carried, and the quiet heroism just was there.
