Stephan bounces their leg in anticipation as Scar parks the car in the parking lot of the small farm.
It’s the middle of October and Scar and Stephan are going out on a date.
Scar had decided to take them to a farm to try out a corn maze, pick out some pumpkins to carve later and to just enjoy the crisp fall day.
Scar parks the car, turning the keys to turn the car off.
The vex hybrid turns, looking at his enbyfriend, “You ready to get lost?”
“In the maze or your eyes?” Stephan asks, cheeks pink.
“Both if you want to.” Scar says, winking.
The vex hybrid opens up his door, stepping out of his car.
Stephan moves to unbuckle their seatbelt.
Once it’s unbuckled, the cardinal hybrid turns to open their door, but finds their boyfriend standing at their door, already moving to open it for them.
Stephan blushes, getting out of Scar’s car with a smile on their face.
The avian shuts the car door behind them, taking Scar’s hand in their own.
The two hybrids walk through the parking lot, the sound of Scar’s cane taping the ground follows them as they walk.
Stepahn’s face lights up when they catch the smell of the fresh cider and cider doughnuts.
The two lovers walk into the barn, waiting in line before getting to the counter.
Scar orders them both a cup of hot apple cider and two cider doughnuts for them, one each.
Stephan pulls out their wallet to pay but Scar shakes his head, “I asked you out for this date today, I’ll pay.” he says handing over some cash to pay for the food and drink.
The two of them move off to the side after getting their doughnuts, waiting on their cider.
Stephan pulls their shoulder up to their ears, shivering a bit, “It’s a little chilly.” they say, smiling, cheeks pink from the cold.
“I know how to make you warmer.” Scar says before leaning down and pressing a kiss to the cardinal hybrid’s cheek.
Stephan’s cheeks heat up, blushing, warming them.
“Told you.” Scar says, chuckling.
“Order for Scar.” A woman from behind the counter says, holding up two paper cups.
Scar takes one in his hand and Stephan takes the other.
The two of them walk out of the barn, sitting on a hay bale, watching other people walk by as they eat their doughnuts and drink their hot cider, the drink warming them up from the inside.
“Oh my gosh.” Scar says, smiling, “I love that top.” Scar says, looking at a goat hybrid balking by with someone else.
“It is really cute.” Stephan comments, taking a sip of their drink.
When the two of them are done, Stephan takes their trash, throwing it into a trash can before walking back to their boyfriend, taking his hand before the two of them walk over to the corn maze.
Scar buys two tickets for the maze and they enter it, walking through, trying to get out the other side.
They walk through the maze, enjoying the sounds of the wind rustling through the corn stalks, people laughing, and the sounds of birds singing.
Stephan’s eyes are looking up towards the top of the corn and the sky, looking at the birds.
Their face lights up as their eyes land on a bird pecking at the ground, eating a few bugs there. It’s about 6 inches long with a black and white body. It has a white stripe down its back and white spots on its black wings. A red patch on the back of its head helps with the identification of its gender.
“Scar.” Stephan says, pulling out their phone, “It’s a male Downy Woodpecker.” they say, grinning wide as they snap a few photos of the woodpecker, “I wish I had my professional camera."
The cardinal hybrid snaps a few more photos of the woodpecker before it flaps its wings and flies up into the sky, flying off towards the woods.
Stephan puts their phone away, a fond smile on their face. They are going to have to add the woodpecker’s picture to his scrapbook of woodpeckers.
Scar smiles down at them, he loves seeing Stephen happy, it makes him feel happy.
They start to walk again, his cane hitting against the ground as they walk.
The two lovers go around a turn, going and then coming to a dead end.
“It’s a dead end.” Stephan says, clicking their tongue, and turns to go back.
Scar plans a hand on their shoulder, stopping them.
He brings his that’s not holding onto his cane up, cupping Stephan’s cheek, kissing them.
Stephan melts into the kiss, their left foot lifting in a foot pop.
They stand there for what feels like forever, shearing warmth and love, not letting go of each other.
They eventually separate for air, cheeks red, giggling with glee and fondness.
