Work Text:

The first person to catch them is Kevin. Which is no surprise to the others if they were to think about it. Kevin is practically their toddler with the way he follows them around. Kevin rolls his eyes and sighs when Dan points it out to him. Kevin wanted to practice but Andrew had told him no. Neil had disappeared into the void long before, and Kevin was not in the mood for a rescue mission. Instead he decided to creep into his room until someone, hopefully Neil with an itch to practice, came in. He was very good at keeping himself occupied all alone up until recently. He cracked the spine on a new geography textbook and paged through desperately hoping for an obsessive streak to hit him and get him interested.

He soon gave up pacing around the room twice before finally cracking open the door to the living room. The lights are off and Kevin can’t see much but there are enough to see the two shapes of Neil and Andrew curled up on the floor, their heads resting on a beanbag chair. Andrew’s telltale breathing told Kevin they were asleep. Kevin keeps this one to himself. He tucks the memory away, preserving it from his teammates prying eyes. He still can’t believe that Neil would choose Andrew over night practice but maybe he doesn’t understand their dynamic.

Matt thinks he's the first because of Kevin’s secret. It’s a late night snack run after Kevin is asleep, so he can’t tell them off for it. Dan and Renee wandered off long ago, Matt searches for Neil and Andrew because god only knows where Nicky is. Matt finally finds his two teammates staring at a display and Neil’s hand is gripping the sleeve of Andrew’s coat like a lifeline. Not quite holding hands but something tells Matt that Andrew wouldn’t even think about doing that in public of all places. He tells Dan, who smiles softly and looks over at Andrew and Neil, tucked into the backseat of Matt’s truck. A piercing glare from Andrew gets her to turn away but not before the impact of the scene is imprinted between the two of them like a molten shine of humanity between the two boys.

Aaron is annoyed to catch them. It’s in the locker room after a practice when Andrew and Neil are arguing. They’re in front of Neil's locker and Aaron understands their weird brand of flirting enough that he gets the HELL out of the locker room. He decides to scrub his brain out of his head afterwards.

Renee doesn’t catch them but instead becomes the first to understand. It’s been months and nobody is quite willing to believe they’re actually together. Like as a couple. But Renee watches as the conversations while walking around during practice starts to focus on the two of them than at Andrew’s interest in world ending situations and vastly impossible things happen. She sees Neil’s hardened eyes soften when Andrew comes closer during meetings. Renee notices the little things that the others don’t because she wants to understand how they are together and not why.

Allison doesn’t catch them per se, but she sees through them. From the crass looks sent everyone's way when someone, mostly Kevin, criticizes Neil. Or when Andrew is being a total bitch and Neil pretends that it’s normal human behavior. Allison pretends not to care but she wishes that someone would care about her as unconditionally as those two idiots do about each other.

The foxes care, but they also couldn’t really give a shit on how their teammates act. The foxes know, Andrew and Neil are completely aware that they know. But their connection becomes normal. Something that they can’t even process when it happened but it did.
