Summary
“Then what is it, huh?” Mike muttered bitterly. “I couldn’t even stay at home. I had to leave. Had to come and bother you.”
“Mike,” Lucas intoned, surprised to hear how sad his voice sounded. “You could never bother me. Not for a thing like this. Look at me.”
Mike did, swallowing, his eyes misty, the tension still present, “... I know. But—”
“No buts,” Lucas said. “Tell me what happened,” he paused and pulled his chair closer, imploring Mike with a look. “Please.”
Mike stared at him for a long, long moment and he could see the walls shake in their foundation, could see them shiver and tremble, till they finally crumbled—a soft, quiet destruction—and Mike took in a bracing breath.
One night, right before bed, Lucas spotted Mike outside his window. This led to a much-needed conversation about buried grief, lots of shared tears and the reinforcement of what their bond had always been.
