Work Text:
"No."
"Please?"
"Absolutely not."
"I promise it's going to work."
"…You don't keep many promises."
Nobara is starting to get on Megumi's last nerve. For the past few days she's been insisting on placing a mistletoe somewhere during the Christmas party they want to have before their winter break from school.
She has a plan to get Yuuji and Megumi underneath it somehow so they can finally say their feelings and confess to each other.
And of course seal the deal with a tender loving kiss like in those cliche American movies. It's simple right?
Wrong.
Megumi is 100% convinced that Yuuji doesn't see him as more than a friend or even best friend. Sure, they hang out all the time and aren't really seen apart for too long, but they're friends!
"Give it an hour, at least." Nobara pleads. "I wanna use the mistletoe anyway to get a kiss from Maki, so it'll be there regardless."
Megumi pinches the bridge of his nose, sighing heavily. "What does Maki think about this little plan of yours?"
"She agreed with me. You and Itadori need to talk about the very obvious elephant in the room." Nobara says with a knowing look, and Megumi scowls in embarrassment, red dusting his cheeks. "Shut up."
"Fushiguro, it's very obvious how you feel about him. Just talk to Itadori before I do it for you." she whines.
Kissing Yuuji underneath the mistletoe? That sounds like a dream come true. But what if he's wrong, and Yuuji sees him as a friend? What if he ruins the relationship they have between each other?
Megumi frowns, contemplating. But what if Nobara is right? That Yuuji sees him more than just a friend and would want to date Megumi?
"Just think about it," Nobara says, her tone more understanding. "You don't want to miss out on an opportunity just because you're scared. Besides, if he does anything stupid, I'll hit him with my hammer so hard he'll forget his own name." she teases with a smirk.
Megumi huffs out a chuckle and shakes his head. Leave it to Nobara to handle things her way if they go south. He looks at her and she tilts her head in a way that asks, 'What do you say?' as she waits for his response.
A beat passes by and Megumi finally relents with a sigh. "..Fine. What's your plan?"
After explaining her "brilliant" plan to Megumi he was still a little hesitant at first. Yuuji is oblivious at times, so it's not like the plan wouldn't work. Even so, Megumi doesn't want things to turn out worse that it might actually be.
That's an exaggeration, he's really fucking scared of ruining the friendship they have over some stupid Christmas tradition.
"So, what did Kugisaki want us to do?" Yuuji asks curiously, walking beside Megumi cheerfully. He holds a tray of homemade kurisumasu keki in his hands, wrapped very nicely in clear foil. Megumi opted to buy chicken for everyone, seeing as cooking doesn't come as naturally as it does for Yuuji. It's something that Megumi envies sometimes, but he can't deny the amount of times that he's felt his heart skip a beat when Yuuji goes the extra mile to add a little more ginger into his meals.
"Well, she wanted us to bring the food into the common area first, and set it on the tables so that way it'll be easier to pass everything out to each other," Megumi explains casually with a small shrug.
Making it into the common room, Megumi and Yuuji set the food down on the counter, watching in amusement as Nobara struggles to get a few decorations on the ceiling. "Need some help there?" Yuuji teases. She growls in annoyance, leaning on her tippy toes. "Shut up, idiot."
"Seems like she's in a mood already," Yuuji murmurs to Megumi jokingly as he sets the tray down next to the bag of chicken. Megumi chuckles quietly and mumbles back, "When is she not?" before he sees Maki rounding the counter to help Nobara out.
Reaching over to grab the tinsel from Nobara's hands, she carefully hangs it just above where Nobara wanted to originally put it, giving both boys a warning look. "She'll be in a mood to kick both of your asses in a minute if you keep standing there like a couple of idiots."
Yuuji visibly deflates and Megumi rolls his eyes. "We'll help, don't worry," he reassures, searching around the room. "Where is Okkotsu?"
"Decorating the tree with Inumaki," Nobara says, pointing to where the pair is in the room, putting different ornaments on the Christmas tree. Yuuta waves with a smile, and Toge greets the other two with a nod.
Yuuji looks around the counter before he asks, "We don't have any plates?" and Megumi wants to sink into the floor when he sees Nobara and Maki's faces grow mischievous and playful.
"Would you look at that? You're so right Itadori," Nobara says in a teasing undertone that Yuuji makes a slight face at, unfortunately for Megumi. "Nobara left them in the next room over. You and Megumi can go get them," Maki adds on, voice more composed even if she's finding this situation just as amusing.
Megumi holds back a scowl, and watches Yuuji nod with a confused smile. "Sounds good, I guess?" He gazes at Megumi with a tilt of his head. "Wanna go?"
Yuuji looks like such a cute puppy right now that Megumi swears he almost stops breathing for a second. He nods, a soft expression overtaking his features for a split second before he schools it into a more nonchalant look. "Yeah, let's go," he says, following Yuuji out of the main room, giving Nobara and Maki a glare once Yuuji's back is turned.
Nobara gives Megumi a playful thumbs up with a smirk, and Maki sticks her tongue out, mouthing 'Good luck' to the raven-haired boy.
"You think this plan will work?" Yuuta asks curiously once Yuuji and Megumi are out of the room. Toge nods. 'They've been pining for each other for who knows how long. This plan is definitely gonna work one way or another.' he signs with an amused look.
Walking into the other room, Yuuji and Megumi find the plates they need for the party rather quickly. Handing a few of the plates to Megumi, Yuuji quietly chuckles to himself. "They were acting weird, right?" Megumi nods with a sigh. "They're more than weird most of the time," he says.
Yuuji hums. "Well, you're the least weird of everyone," he comments with a smile. "You're really cool, actually."
Megumi feels his face grow warm. "Yeah, whatever," he says quietly, matching his smile, albeit much more softly.
They both remain quiet for a moment, neither of them really knowing what to say to each other. Megumi wants to break the silence but his mind comes up blank. It's only then that Yuuji finally clears his throat. "Let's get back to the room, yeah? We can't eat if we don't have plates," he jokes slightly, earning a small chuckle out of Megumi. "Alright, let's go then."
Reaching the common area once more with the plates in hand, Megumi already feels his heart begin to beat a little faster. Nobara would put the mistletoe up soon, but she didn't tell him where it would be, which already even more anxiety inducing for him.
"We're back with plates!" Yuuji announces in the common room, as him and Megumi set them down by the counter carefully next to the food. "Took you long enough," Maki says with a small smirk.
"It took like five minutes, relax," Megumi says with a scoff.
"Well some of us are hungry," Nobara retorts, getting a plate for her and Maki. Yuuta and Toge join shortly after, grabbing their own plate of food.
The music is cheerful, the decorations are bright, and the energy is perfectly fit for some sweet romance in the air. Megumi doesn't focus on what Yuuta is talking to him about, only half-listening to his story on a curse he and Toge exorcised together.
What he's actually focused on is the lack of the mistletoe anywhere in the room. Nobara said her and Maki would find a way to get it on the ceiling without Yuuji knowing, but now Megumi doesn't know where it'll be either.
Well shit, he thinks.
Excusing himself politely from Yuuta's slightly smitten ramblings about how he and Toge work really well as a team, he searches for Yuuji, wanting nothing more than to rip off this band-aid of feelings now than wait in anticipation for something that might not happen.
He finds Yuuji talking to Toge cheerfully, chatting away about how he made the pastry he brought earlier. Here goes nothing, he thinks.
"Itadori," Megumi says quietly, catching their attention. "What's up, Fushiguro?" Yuuji asks with a smile.
"Uh.." Megumi pauses, turning his gaze to Toge for a second and the blonde-haired boy seems to recognize what seems to be on the tip of Megumi's tongue. He gives the raven-haired boy a nod of encouragement.
Megumi turns his gaze back to Yuuji, and a wave of comfort washes over him when they lock eyes. Yuuji is always patient, never rushing anything with anyone and never hesitates to help someone if he feels they need it. It's something that drew Megumi in, and knowing Yuuji over the years made him see the good in things that weren't even possible to him before they met.
With a newfound confidence, he clears his throat. "Can we talk?" Yuuji's expression softens almost immediately and he nods wordlessly.
He follows Megumi into the hallway, a little more secluded from everyone else, and Megumi's heart begins to race again.
"Listen, Itadori I—"
"If this is about me asking for your divine dogs all the time, I'm sorry I just think they're so cute!" Yuuji blurts out apologetically.
Megumi actually has to chuckle at that. "What? No, I don't care about that."
Yuuji rambles with a more nervous smile, a little red dusting his cheeks now. "Well, I mean you look so annoyed about it all the time, I thought it was starting to bother you—"
"Itadori—" Megumi tries to interject but Yuuji's in too deep in his cute ramble now that he doesn't know whether to kiss him to stop it now.
"No seriously, Fushiguro! You're like extremely strong and capable when we go on these missions and I just think you're really amazing and I—"
Fuck it.
Megumi leans in suddenly, capturing his lips with Yuuji's, and his rambling stops almost immediately. He shuts his eyes and feels the other boy freeze for a moment, before Yuuji gradually relaxes into the kiss.
Slowly, Megumi cradles Yuuji's face into his hands as he deepens the kiss slightly. His mind is a whirlwind of emotions and feelings. Is he actually doing this? Yuuji's lips feel gentle and warm, just like he does, and it makes Megumi feel all fluttery inside.
They both part for air after a moment, and Yuuji's face is as red as a tomato. "Wow.." he murmurs, almost in a daze.
"Holy shit," Megumi whispers.
"Right under the mistletoe!" Nobara calls out not too far away, and that's when he sees a camera pointed in their direction. Megumi's head then snaps up to see that indeed the mistletoe was right underneath him and Yuuji the entire time, and his face flushes immediately. Yuuji slowly looks up too and laughs softly.
"For the record, I like you. More than friends," Megumi states with embarrassment seeping into his whole being that everyone most definitely just saw him and Yuuji kiss under the mistletoe.
"Yeah, I got that loud and clear I think.." Yuuji says way more smiley now.
Maybe the plan worked after all, but Megumi wouldn't dare admit that to Nobara.
