Summary:

Will Byers is in college now, and while he might not be a kid anymore, his days of playing DnD are far from over. While college for some is the best time in their life, clicking a link to a Discord DnD group might very well be the best decision of his life, especially when it brings him closer to someone he never thought he would meet: Mike Wheeler, the old childhood best friend of his best friends and unbeknownst to Will, the same stranger he had been arguing with online for weeks.

or: discord chatfit/college au, where Will has no pfp, his best friends are his roommates (and wingmen), and one persistent stranger just won't leave him alone.

Notes:

PLEASE make sure you have creator skins enabled or this just won't work at all! Also apologies if it's not exact, I'm not super good with the html and css stuff lol, so if anyone has suggestions to make stuff better lemme know!

Took MAJOR influence from WildfireValkyrie's Discord Work Skin, although I did change/add some things :)

This was made on desktop so it's a bit... uglier on mobile but everything should still work! If the text and other things like replies being a bit squashed bothers you, turn your phone into landscape mode and it pretty much fixes it.

ALSO! Apologies to anyone that's actually played DnD. I've only ever played BG3 (like 500 hours but whatever) because I could never find anyone to run a campaign with me so some stuff might be more aligned with game stuff than actual DnD oops.

The college experience so far had been just about Will's expectations: spectacularly worse than what the movies made it out to be but made marginally better by the fact that he was rooming with his two best friends in the world–Dustin and Lucas. Since moving to Hawkins at age 10, the three of had been practically inseparable, spending summers playing DnD and daydreaming about their college days, and although the days of them meeting were long behind them, DnD was not. It was one of the few things they were all mutually excited about, so when they saw the hastily thrown together poster boasting about the 'best DnD group eva' they ignored everything their parents had told them about stranger danger and followed the link.

dndGabe, PalaDAN and ashhhh are typing...

In moments Will's phone goes from held in his hands to bouncing against the cushions of their lumpy couch. At the time getting the cheapest option for their dorm seemed like the best choice, because how much time would they be spending on it really when they all had their own rooms, but as his phone clatters against what could only be a spring peeking out, Will finds himself starting to regret that choice. What he doesn’t regret, however, is turning his phone off when that rollfart guy started to really annoy him.

It wasn’t like the three of them had done anything wrong. All they had done was join a Discord group he had been really excited about, because more people to play DnD with obviously meant more fun, until it didn’t. Apparently joining meant getting made fun of for not having a ‘cool’ profile, and getting made fun of for a profile that didn’t even matter because the important thing was DnD made him mad.

Will huffs, crossing his arms over his chest and ignoring his phone on the other side of the couch. Despite his own displeasure with the server, his roommates seemed to be ecstatic since joining–Dustin was giggling harder than he had heard in weeks and Lucas was grinning wider than he did at almost anything. How come he was the only one irritated? How come he was the only one that guy had picked on?

“That guy was so annoying. Maybe we shouldn’t have joined.” Will grumbles.

And instead of the pity he had been expecting, Dustin just hums, continuing to stare down at his phone, typing out what seemed to be a lengthy message.

He frowns. “What are you doing? Are you still messaging?”

“Yeah.” Dustin responds, still not looking up from his phone. “Some guy was asking how we got into DnD.”

“And you’re bothering to answer?” Will scoffs.

“It wasn’t that guy you were arguing with–some other guy. Besides, some mod changed his name to rollfart and now he won’t stop raging, it’s kinda funny.” Dustin laughs and he finally stops typing, glancing up at Will before he looks right back down again.

“It’s kinda weird to talk about him now that we’re in college. You ever wonder what he’s up to?” Lucas questions, scrolling on his phone.

“Who?” Will questions.

They both respond at the same time, still not looking up from their phones, “Mike.”

“Oh yeah, that guy that-”

“Introduced us to DnD. Yeah, him.” Lucas interrupts, finally putting his phone down, “Wonder if he’s off to college now too or if he’s off doing something else.”

“I imagine whatever he’s doing is probably better than that one guy.” Will grumbles, his irritation spiking back up again the moment his thoughts stray back to the guy from the server.

Dustin breaks into giggles as he continues to scroll, “You’re not gonna let that go are you?”

“We didn’t even say anything and he was already deciding we were bad! Who does that!” He’s practically whining at this point but he doesn’t care. It was stupid.

“Him apparently.” Lucas mumbles, “Just try to avoid talking to him and it’s fine.”

“That’s gonna be easy because I don’t think I wanna ever talk there again.”

“You’re missing out man.” Dustin waves his phone in the air, pointing at some message on his phone that Will couldn’t even hope to make out, “Some of these people are kinda funny actually, and they got a channel dedicated to like everything. This is gonna be perfect for the next time we play.”

The frown from earlier comes back with a vengeance and Will can’t even pretend to be happy with Dustin’s suggestion. Sure, having a larger group of people to play with and a cool looking server full of DnD stuff seemed amazing, but if it came with jerks like the guy from earlier it really wasn’t something Will wanted any part in. He had enough experience for a lifetime with bullies in high school, and he had hoped coming to college would change that. That maybe he wouldn’t be some sort of loser to everyone, even to people with the same interests as him.

“Why don’t we just keep it to our original party?” He protests and immediately knows it’s futile when Lucas and Dustin exchange a look.

“I’m just saying dude it would probably be a lot more fun to stay. We gotta get out there and experience new things.” Lucas points out, and if Lucas speaks out in favour of something, Will knows it’s almost useless to hope that Dustin wouldn’t agree.

Dustin nods furiously, “Yeah, exactly. And come on, Will! Imagine that guy trying to argue with Max! It would be so funny.”

He sighs, glancing over at his phone before finally picking it up. “Fine. We can stay.”

Maybe it would prove to be a good distraction, one that could keep him from over analyzing his whole college decision. Art was always his passion, his dream, but now that he was at college it just felt like one big nightmare. There was no familiarity here—no classmates to talk to, no teachers he knew—it was all new, and it was overwhelming. And Will knew he would get used to it eventually, the newness, the difficulty of acclimating to a new city, a new life, and when he did he would be free, free from Hawkins, free from everything he left behind.

But for now, his classes were difficult, shoving new mediums and techniques down his throat with every class, and even his elective was heavier than expected, ensuring he was rushing around campus at almost every moment during the day. Which brought him to the present, speed walking from one end of campus to the other, from his Techniques 1 class to his Film 101 elective, and bumping into the hottest guy he’s ever seen.

He’s tall, a few inches taller than Will himself which was already saying something, long curly hair, the prettiest brown eyes, and a sick looking piercing in his right ear, but most importantly, he’s hot. And he doesn’t even notice Will, walking right by him, headphones in and nose buried in his phone. Fuck. And even though he’s supposed to be paying attention to his professor, drawing along with her teachings, he can’t help but find himself sketching long hair and pretty eyes instead. Double fuck.

No matter how hard he tries, he can’t find it in himself to focus the rest of the day, barely able to force himself to his charcoal set to practice when he gets home. The whole apartment is home for once, and even more rarely, they’re all in the living room together, doing their own thing. It’s almost quiet enough to lull Will into a sense of comfort, just barely starting to focus before Dustin starts talking.

“There’s some general meeting for the DnD group this Wednesday evening apparently, should we go?”

Will ignores him, charcoal pressing even harder down on the paper.

“Can’t. Will and I have class.” Lucas adds.

His charcoal presses down even harder, leaving dark smudges in its wake.

“Ugh, sucks- Oh? I think we got a new member, I don’t recognize- OH MY GOD, WILL.”

Will jolts, almost jumping out of his chair, his charcoal stick snapping and leaving his sketchbook coated, “What?! Did something happen?”

Dustin bursts into laughter, hardly able to get any words out in between giggling fits, “Log into Discord right now and look at the server.”

“Dude, I’m busy, just show me yourself.” He whines, sighing as he cleans up the mess.

But Dustin just shakes his head, pointing at Will’s phone with a wide grin on his face. Will rolls his eyes and quickly wipes his hands, his irritation prickling even more when he hears Lucas burst into laughter too. What was it that was so funny and important? He grabs his phone, logging into Discord and squints at the general chat. It’s just that douchebag from the other day.

“What? It’s just that guy.”

Dustin giggles. “Look at his username.”

He giggles and then immediately frowns because this was the jerk who made fun of his profile as a first message, he shouldn’t be giggling about a compliment. But it was fun to chat with him, and suddenly Will wanted to see what his characters looked like.

He scrolls a bit up and frowns when he just finds Character Sheets from other people. He eventually taps on the search button and types in mw77’s name and finds his sheet, buried a few days ago further up and no one really said anything when he sent it, ignoring him, but Will reads it over and wow, it actually is really good too.

If you happened to see me post this by accident a bit ago... no you didn't. This fic, unlike my other one if you've read it, will be uploaded in chunks even though it's pretty much complete already because the coding takes FOREVERRRR and I would go actually crazy if I had to sit down and do it all in one sitting, but uploads should be every few days depending how busy I am!

This is gonna be pretty silly the whole time so if you liked my other fic and are looking for something more like that opposed to this, I'm also working on two other fics currently that are a lot more serious :) no idea on an eta for them though. Might wanna finish this first before I try and commit to posting two fics at once but we'll seeeee because I'm working on them anyway.

I was also really projecting onto all the side characters my love for cats because I was really uncreative with finding pfps with them tbh. Also def projected my love for Radiohead onto Dustin too LOL.
