#8 Regret

Summary:

A self reflection while staring at actual reflection.

Work Text:

He had been staring at it for the past twenty minutes now.

A reflection in the mirror, one so alien he hardly recognized it. He’s been stuck with it for the past two months now, how does it still look so uncanny to him?

The face of a middle aged Chilean man stared back at him. Messy shoulder length black hair framing a face full of scars and blue eyes that just barely seemed to glow, as well as dried patches of skin that nearly resembled scales.

A middle aged man who stood in the middle of his own childhood bedroom.

They keep telling him that this is him.

That this was his own reflection he saw.

This is his own reflection.

But that didn’t mean that it didn’t feel so wrong. Like staring at someone you thought was long dead, but came back and met you face to face.

Maybe that’s how Mama felt…

He was lucky that he didn’t have to stay a monster forever. Something about merfolk genes in him, he was not entirely paying attention to that whole meeting at Innovation, he already knew how messed up he was and their solution to fix him was to apparently mess him up even more.

Turning his gaze away from the mirror, he stared down at his own hands. Only two, each with five fingers, something he was still trying to get used to again.

He thought he was happy. He feels happy, he’s lucky he even gets to walk again instead of slither, he’s lucky out of all the other abominations down there that he lived, he’s on the surface, and he’s even with his own family!

Why did this feel so WRONG?!

“Grraaaah…” He grit his teeth. He turned to a water bottle on his desk, screwing off the cap of a water bottle. He splashed it on his own face.

He looked back at the mirror again. What stared back was a monster he recognized all too well. The same ugly beast with the glowing eyes and sharp teeth he knew for over a decade at this point.

Finally.

Staring at the face he hated that became his own. Now this felt normal.
