Work Text:
Don called Blue into his office as soon as he arrived for his shift, and he wasn't exactly excited about being called to the principal's office.
That's exactly what he felt like.
"Ryan told me you had a question about whether you had to leave the 113 or quit being a firefighter altogether," says Don as he looks at him with a softness that gives Blue a bad feeling.
"And you know the answer, so just say it," replies Blue seriously, not wanting to deal with whatever this shit is.
"Well, I talked to Raleigh, and the Chief, and the decision we came to is—" the door slams opens as Blue's heart slams into his chest, and he turns in surprise and irritation. "Ryan? What the hell did you break into my office during a private meeting for?"
"Because I'm not letting you deliver news without my knowing," replies Ryan stubbornly as he shuts the door and steps up next to Blue.
"You could've knocked instead of barging in," grumbles Don as he rolls his eyes at his oldest son's antics.
Blue just snorts because now there's two people who get to witness his entire world shattering.
"The decision is that both is off the table," says Don with a sympathetic smile that fills Blue with anger. "But you can run through the training when it starts, and if you make it through, you could be placed at a different house. He can't touch you then."
"So, it's only off the table for now, not for good?" asks Ryan seriously as he uncrosses his arm, one of his hands finding Blue's elbow.
It's the only grounding point Blue has right now.
"It was the decision after a two-hour meeting," Don's voice sounds tired, but there's acceptance and pride. Like he can't quite believe it but is glad that everything worked out. "Your grandpa said his only problem was that Blue was in our house and not properly trained. He promised to leave Blue alone if he got proper training and didn't come back to the 113."
"So, we just need to set him up with a job until then, so he has income," Ryan turns to Blue, and his eyes are shining so fucking brightly. "There are several that you could be really good at, if you don't have any in mind. But how are you feeling about all of this?"
"Just glad that I don't have to quit for good," replies Blue quietly, not really wanting to let them into his head on what else he feels. "No shift today then, yeah? I'll pack up and get going."
"Yeah, I'm sorry Blue," says Don softly, smile turning sad.
"Don't be, this was great. I'll see you when I see you," replies Blue quietly as he steps out of Ryan's reach and leaves.
He grabs his duffle and heads out in silence. Nobody's going to care right now anyway, and he knows it'll stay that way.
