Chapter 1: For The Love Of God

Chapter Text

The clock read 1:10PM. Sonic was sitting down in music class waiting for the time to pass by. Unfortunately for him, time seemed to do the exact opposite.

Time just always wants to go by fast when I’m having fun, huh? Sonic thought to himself. He zoned out while the director of the music had mentioned something about a project.

His mind only slipped back into its right place when the director ordered him to bring himself back to the present.

“Next pairing, Sonic and Shadow.”

What. “Um, Ms. Vanilla. With all due respect, is this some kind of joke?” Sonic jokes towards Vanilla thinking this was some sick prank she pulled due to his tendencies to zone out during class.

“I wouldn’t joke around about something this serious, Sonic. It’s worth about 70% of your grade.” Vanilla had replied back as politely as possible. Sonic stood in shock as he glanced back at the charcoal hedgehog in the corner of the room.

The ebony hedgehog, Shadow, just stared forward as if he didn't give a shit. Of course, he wore his resting grumpy face. But when wasn't he? His gaze shifted slightly to look at Sonic.

When his eyes met Sonic's, his face changed in a way Sonic could only assume was hatred. Of course this guy hates me, why wouldn’t he?!

Sonic’s gaze averts back to Vanilla. He swallows the lump in his throat, and his pride as well, as he focuses back on the composition notebook provided for the project. Lucky me.

“Okay, class! Now we all know our groups, get together and begin working on your project! You have exactly one month to complete it, so I expect you all to be ready by March 18th. Get to work!” Ms. Vanilla spoke softly, signalling for everyone to part and join their groups to begin their project.

Sonic sighed and stood up, making his way over to Shadow. “So, what do you play?” Sonic asks, putting his weight against the wall.

“Guitar.” Shadow spoke purely, his voice calm yet nonchalant.

“That’s all? C’mon! You definitely have more hidden up your sleeve!” Sonic teased towards Shadow.

“Electric, bass, acoustic.” Shadow rolled his eyes, already pissed at Sonic's presence.

“Huh. That checks out! You sure drag the emo bit out, don’t ya?” Sonic provokes Shadow once again. But who’s to blame him? He’s just too easy to tease.

“Emo bit?” Shadow questions, his ear twitching with growing annoyance.

“Yeah! For sure dude. You got all this grumpy aura to you. Not to mention those highlights? Didn’t know Hot Topic was inspired by a person!”

“God forbid I have a sense of style, unlike your clashing colours.” Shadow bit out, glaring daggers into Sonic.

“Clashing colors?! It’s called fashion! But I’m sure you wouldn’t know anything about that 50 shades of gray!” Sonic responded back, Sonic might be intimidated but his style is something he never doubts.

“I have fashion, just my sense in it is slightly different to yours.” Shadow growled.

“Yeah, if fashion was an indie band logo slapped on a shirt! I mean c’mon! What band even is that?” Sonic bit back, falling into a steady back and forth pace

“It’s Linkin Park. At least I have taste in music.” Shadow smirked, crossing his arms.

“I have taste in music too! It’s just different! And better.” Sonic smugly replied, doing the same

“Whatever, Sonic. Let's just get on with the project.” Shadow rolled his eyes again, walking into the practice room connected to the music room.

Sonic follows Shadow into the practice room, fetching his drum sticks from his backpack and sliding into the chair of his drums. Shadow lifted the guitar case off his back and laid it on the floor, unlatching it and lifting out a black and red electric guitar (specifically the one Eddie Munson used).

Shadow lifts the guitar to his chest and begins to tune it whilst Sonic plays a classic 4/4 beat on his drum kit. Shadow finally got his guitar in tune so he plugged in his amp and began strumming chords, the harsh yet soft sound filling the room.

“Hey! This is a nice flow we got so far!” Sonic smirked and turned his head towards Shadow. The wooden sticks in his hands falling into the rhythm of the tuned drums.

“You're not so bad yourself, Sonic.” Shadow let himself smile gently as he shut his eyes, falling into the flow of their instruments blending together.

“You think so? Right back at ya, Shads!” Sonic giggled, a warm feeling spread in his chest. Weird, did it just get hot in here, or is that just me?

“Shads?” Shadow questioned, glancing at Sonic from the side and raising his brow.

“Yeah! Just a silly nickname. I mean, it almost feels like we were meant to work together on this project.” Sonic quickly rushed to put together an explanation as to why he had given Shadow a nickname.

Shadow's heart stuttered and his flow fell off rhythm for a single second before he was able to cover it up again. His heart fluttered as if a million butterflies bloomed in there. What the fuck was happening to him? This wasn't like Shadow at all!

“We should exchange numbers! To y’know, work on the project outside of school!” Sonic blurted out the words from his mouth before thinking about what he had just said.

Shadow's face flushed slightly as he turned to look at Sonic. “Uhh…sure? We can head to my place after school to practice.” Shadow spoke, heat rushing up his muzzle.

“I’d like that.” Sonic smiled softly at Shadow’s question.

And so they sat there contently in a melodic rhythm, Shadow soft yet firmly strumming his electric guitar, and Sonic with his bold but tender drumming.

And although no words were said, the peace of their shared happiness was all that was needed to be felt to know they were in the right mindset.

And maybe, just maybe, they really were made to play together.
