Shadow has to learn how to manage his grief while also getting to experience everything that is supposed to come with being a kid/teenager in an actual loving and supportive home.
He also will slowly have to deal with whatever unspoken feelings keep bubbling up between him and Sonic. Slow burn.

“Rouge.”
“Right. Okay.” Rouge broke off for a moment, taking a breath before resuming. “So. The tapes we found are… not quite what we thought they were.”
"I thought we agreed to hand them over to GUN to take care of."
"I know, but... I got curious," Rouge admitted, and Shadow scoffed, unsurprised, though growing more tense when he noted the unease in his friend's expression, her posture.
He followed Rouge into their living room. Sat on top of their end table was the box Shadow recognised, spotting the tapes they had recovered in the Eggman base poking out through the opened slit.
“Okay.” Shadow said, voice his usual deadpan drawl as he returned his attention to the bat. “What was it that was so important you needed me here?”
“I’ll just show you.”Or
Shadow and Rouge find a box of tape recordings in an abandoned Eggman facility with one clue on it; a piece of tape labeled 'SONIC'. When they finally watch the tapes to figure out what's hiding on them, they realize Sonic has been hiding a lot from everyone, and they may have just signed up for more than they bargained for.

“I will be doing the mourning ritual in the backyard, unless it is an issue?” He looks towards Maddie and Tom at this.
The humans share a quick look.
“Oh, no bud! It’s fine, really. We won’t bother you back there.” Tom is quick to say.
Maddie adds on “I’ll make sure those two leave you alone.”Knuckles takes another bite of carrot before continuing. “You won’t bother me. Sit by or talk to me if you desire to do so, but I won’t hear or answer you. I’ll only ‘wake up’ if I’m shaken around roughly or injured.” They all nod at that.
There is silence for a bit, before a knuckles seems to remember something.
“Also I’ll be in mourning for a week.” He takes another bite.
“A WEEK?!” His tribe all exclaim in surprise, their faces shocked and mouths agape.

Or; It is time for Knuckles to go through an Echidna mourning ritual, his family will be there to watch over and protect him in the process.

Since Sonic has no obligations to Amy, Knuckles, and Tails this winter on account of them going on their solo adventures, he decides to visit his uncle to help the burnt hedgehog prepare for the coming season. He gets the closure he needs after putting himself through hell.
And, fortunately, he has people who are ready and willing to help pull him back to a healthy state when he leaves his childhood behind for good.

Summary
After Sonic's friends head out on their own solo-journeys and Dr. Eggman decides to retire, Sonic struggles to find a new purpose in his life during these times of peace and loneliness. Desperate for distractions, he starts seeking out thrill and getting into one mess after another until he eventually ends up back on Starfall Islands while stalking a shady group of "treasure hunters". Due to a series of unforseen events, the whole group gets involved in a major explosion, with Sonic becoming it's sole survivor.
The hero once again has to deal with being injected with Dark Gaia - while the last time it happened, the evil energy was unable to breach his mental defenses - but a fragile state of mind and years worth of unresolved issues which have all built up ever since then make this an entirely different case.
The weight of the past will eventually catch up even to the fastest thing alive.

After sonic broke the prism and had to find a way to bring his dimension, his home back from the dead. Meeting the different versions of his friends bothered him because all he wanted to do was help them. Shadow was the one that forced him to focus on the fact they had to get the prism back to fix their home. Throughout however long they were stuck in there shadow was the one thing that stayed constant that kept sonic grounded especially after having to face nine. Shadow made a realization that he saw sonic more than just a rival as much as he kept lying to himself and tell himself and everyone that he didn't care about sonic. When sonic was dying in his arms shadow was forced to face the fact the he was terrified of sonic dying that his darkarm instincts that he tried so hard to ignore and keep locked away was screaming at him to help his mate. After shadow successfully saved shadow and got them to the rift that brought them back to where they where before the break both of their first instincts was to find each other.
