Buck and Tommy’s text messages involving Bean.

A couple of days late, but for the Buck Tommy Fluffebruary Round Two: Day 8: Pets

Work Text:

Tommy was just getting dressed after taking a shower when a text came in from Buck. He picked up his phone and looked at, a small smile going across his face as he read the message.

Evan: Does Bean like peanut butter treats?

They had been dating for just over four weeks, Buck had met Bean three weeks ago, and it seemed like Bean had already taken over Buck’s life.

It wasn’t like Tommy was complaining though. He loved his dog, and felt like everybody should.

And maybe someone would call him biased, but Tommy just had to say that his dog was the absolute best.

But now back to Buck’s question. Tommy had to briefly ask himself why Buck was asking if Bean liked peanut butter, but then thought… it didn’t really matter.

No matter how many times Tommy had tried to give Bean peanut Butter over the years, the dog refused to eat it, only doing so much as sniffing it and giving Tommy an unimpressed look on the best of days.

Tommy: Not really

Tommy: Why? Are you looking at treats for him?

Evan: … Maybe 😶

Evan: You wouldn’t be mad if I did, would you?

Tommy: No, you can get him some treats.

Tommy: he likes the milk bones

Buck sent him back a thumbs up, and later that night, Buck showed up with a whole box of the mini milk bones. Bean was ecstatic when he saw them.

One of the great things about being in a committed relationship, Tommy had to admit, was that he didn't have to pay a forkload for a pet sitter when he was sent north for a couple weeks at the peak of wild fire season - they loved having every firefighter pilot available up there.

And what was great about Buck, Tommy didn’t even have to ask him if he would be willing to watch Bean for the two weeks that he would be away. All Tommy had to do was mention they were thinking of sending him up, and Buck was asking if he could watch Bean while Tommy would be gone.

Tommy hadn’t even given Buck any actual confirmation or dates on it. Buck only heard that Tommy had a potential work trip coming up, and was already calling dibs on watching Bean.

And well, Tommy did end up needing to go up to the northern half of the state to fight wildfires, leaving Bean in Buck’s very capable hands. At first it was only supposed to be two weeks, but then it turned into three, and now four, maybe even five.

And at least from every time he called or texted Buck, Buck wasn’t the least bit tired or annoyed of having to look after Bean.

In fact, Tommy was starting to grow afraid that Buck wouldn’t want to give Bean back when he got home.

All of the photos

Evan: We saw some bunnies at the pet store today

Evan: Did you ever notice how well Bean curls up when he’s taking a nap?”

And he couldn’t forget…

Evan: Turns out that Bean hates snow, not that I expected him to like it really.

Tommy was left very confused with that photo. Where did Buck get snow in Los Angeles?

In the middle of July no less?

Actually… Tommy didn’t want to know.

Buck had spent nearly the last five weeks in constant contact with Bean. And he meant it when he said in near constant contact. Bobby let him bring Bean into the station every shift, it turned out Bean was very well behaved compared to just about every other wiener dog, and as a plus, everyone loved him. He had become the unnamed mascot of the 118.

The only times they weren’t together were when they had to go out on calls or Buck had to make a grocery run.

Oh, also when Buck was in the bathroom taking a shower… Bean hated the sound of the shower.

But now that Tommy was back, Bena was back to living with Tommy. And even though he and Tommy spent nearly all their time together when they were both off-shift, and by extension Buck made Tommy bring Bean along, it wasn’t the same.

So here Buck was, sitting on the couch in the loft of the 118, texting Tommy for updates on Bean.

Buck: So how is he doing right now?

It took a couple of minutes, Tommy was in the middle of working on one of his neighbors cars, for Tommy to send him a picture of Bean curled up and sleeping in the dog bed in Tommy’s garage.

Tommy: He hasn’t moved from where he was taking a nap ten minutes ago.

Buck: You’ll give him some extra pets for me?

Tommy: Sure. When he wakes up. He’s finally just given me enough time to actually work on this car.

Buck: Well, just be sure to tell him I’ll see him again tomorrow.

Tommy: Why do I feel like you’re only dating me for my dog?

Buck: That’s not true!

Buck: But he is an added bonus! 😄
