Chapter 1: Hurt People Hurt People

Chapter Text

Kris slumped against the wall, bloody, broken, limp like an unwanted puppet. Their breaths came out short and shaky, they were in shock. Blood pooled under them, a deep, violent red puddle pouring from the gash in their side.

“KRIS!” Ralsei screamed. Susie’s breath caught in her chest, coming out as a guilty sob. Her axe clattered to the floor. “Kris… I-“ She mumbled in a tone that the others had never heard before. Ralsei stood wide eyed, hyperventilating. All their anger had drained out of them, leaving behind nothing but guilt and cold, harsh reality.

“I didn’t mean to… I promised...” Kris’s voice was low and pained, their lips were numb and each syllable brought a new surge of pain.

Suddenly, a bright red glow filled the room. The two hero’s still standing covered their eyes, Kris was far too weak to move so they just clenched theirs shut.

As the light dissipated, a familiar glowing heart was revealed. It floated idly a few feet from Kris before it began shaking erratically. From the SOUL, white, heavenly looking light seemed to form a towering body. Cloaked in white robes embossed with a heart over the chest. Angel wings unfolded from its back as long, flowing hair and curved horns grew from its “Head”, which remained the same, albeit much larger, a glowing red love heart that betrayed no emotion.

The Angel fell to its knees and placed its clawed hands on Kris’s shoulders. It desperately shook them, sobbing out their name. It suddenly jolted, a brainwave clearly hitting. It reached into the human’s pocket and pulled out a familiar round red and white mint. It cupped Kris’s jaw and placed the mint gently onto their tongue.

The choking tension in the room slightly dissipated as Kris lurched, gasping. Green sparkles bounced off the walls as they jolted back to life. Their wound began to knit together, seemingly painfully as they writhed in the Angels embrace.

The Angel whispered comforts into their ear, just barely audible to Susie and Ralsei. “It’s alright Kris, just calm down. I know, I know…” It’s head ominously turned towards the other two. Susie plotted escape plans in her head, expecting biblical, righteous anger.

The Angel swooped Kris into its arms, holding them close to their chest as they went still, seemingly passing out. “You…” The Angel said, voice surreal and inhuman, like a bad radio signal. It took a deep sigh, shaking its head “I just wanted to make everyone happy, I really did.” It continued, its voice lowering, wracked with sadness. “But I still couldn’t…”.

Susie and Ralsei remained rooted in place, petrified. “I should’ve known… They were worried about this, you know? They told me themselves, they thought you would hate them.” Its head turned to look down at Kris, like looking at the others would make them crack.“You didn’t have to go and prove them right.”

Susie swallowed the lump in her throat and tried putting her confused betrayal into words.

“Well what did they expect? Working with the enemy, trying to end the world-“ The Angel interrupted her with a low, ominous laugh. “You really think that they want to end the world? I don’t know what they want, exactly, but thats not it.” It shook its head, using a single claw to push a strand of hair off of Kris’s face, pulling them tighter to its chest.

“I wont let you hurt them. No matter what they did, they don’t…” Its voice cracked as if it was weeping invisible tears. Its wings curled inwards protectively. “They don’t deserve any of this.” It turned to the golden gate and walked away, leaving the two hero’s stood there stewing in their guilt and confusion.

“Hey! Where are you taking them!” Ralsei shouted, stepping forward as Susie retrieved her axe from the ground. “Home, they need to rest.” The Angel replied matter of factly. It walked through the golden doors, the Deltarune parting as it opened and they disappeared into the darkness.
