Born into the lower Mercian nobility around 950, Ethelberht of London lived on his family's wealth most of his life, indulging in all the pleasures English society had to offer at the time.
By his fifties the man had become disillusioned with life and with other people.
Deciding to leave London Ethelberht went on a pilgrimage to Cornwall, hoping to find inspiration to keep on living.
He eventually found his way to Dargorth, or Oakfield in English, a town along the Cornish coast.
A miserable place filled with despair, seeing the village was the last straw for the Londoner.
Going into a nearby cave Ethelberht planned on throwing himself into the abyss but instead he was greeted by a brilliant beam of white light, an Angelic voice coming through and commanding Ethelberht to plant a 'Golden Acorn.'
Following this command he found the acorn and planted it in a grove of dying trees upon a hill.
This acorn grew into a beautiful tree which, through miraculous means, enriched the soil of the entire village.
Giving thanks to God Ethelberht dedicated himself to serving the people of Dargorth the rest of his life, becoming their priest.
Ethelberht, known as the Luminous, passed away on December 28th, 1048 in his sleep.
