Work Text:
The exy court was spinning. It didn't do that, most of the time. Kevin wondered what sort of bizzare stadium Wymack had brought them to.
"Kevin?"
There were hands on his head, moving it, and Kevin pressed his eyes shut, whining at the lancing pain. His hands scrambled against... The floor? Why was he on the floor?
"Kevin!"
That was... Neil, speaking? Kevin wasn't quite sure, the sound murky, which was alarming enough that he forced his eyes open. That might not have helped much, with how blurry his vision was, but Neil's auburn hair and blue eyes were striking enough to be identifiable anyway.
"Why's tha court spinnin?" Kevin asked, slurring his words. "Thas weird..."
"Sure is." Neil said. He had one hand between Kevin's head and the floor, and the other wiping something wet off of Kevin's face. He sounded stressed, maybe, but he didn't look hurt, and his presence felt nice enough that Kevin's eyes felt heavy, slipping shut.
"Nope!" Neil jostled his head, wiping Kevin's sleepiness away. "No napping on an exy court, got it?"
Ugh...
A hand pressed against a tender spot on Kevin's head, making him jerk away. He nearly snapped at Neil before realising it wasn't him. Somehow Kevin hadn't noticed Abby kneeling nearby, poking and prodding.
"Has he been unconscious at any point?" Abby asked Neil.
"Briefly, I think."
Abby was here. Abby was their nurse, so if she was with Kevin, that meant...
The pain, the blurriness, the wetness on his head and face that smelled of iron. Blood. The court wasn't actually spinning. Abby was here because Kevin was hurt.
It was stupidly obvious, in retrospect.
Kevin flexed his hands. His shoulders sort of hurt, but nowhere else. He was still wearing most of his protective gear, except his helmet. The Foxes had been playing... Some other team. Kevin tried to think of the name but couldn't, heartrate picking up.
"I don't... I don' feel good."
Something must have been showing on his face, because Abby squeezed his shoulder. "Hey, you're okay. This is nothing I haven't dealt with before."
"Its not even bleeding that much." Neil blatantly lied.
"Thank you, Neil..." Abby sighed. "Let's get you sat up, shall we?"
The two of them pulled Kevin upright, and he leant against the plexiglass like it was the only thing keeping him up (it was). As Abby started shining a light into his eyes, someone else appeared at Kevin's side, pressing close.
Andrew was breathing hard, blood on his hands and a little on his face. Was he hurt too? Kevin clumsily reached for his hands.
"You okay?"
"Its not mine."
Eventually, Abby finished checking Kevin over and suggested helping him stand. Andrew put Kevin's arm over his shoulder, preparing to haul him up, when someone Kevin didn't recognise spoke. It was a guy dressed in exy gear, but not the Foxes' colours.
"Hey, I'm sorry about Darren. Do you want any help?"
Andrew actually growled, making the unfortunate target nearly trip over himself as he backed away.
Kevin put nearly all his weight on Andrew as he stood, vision spinning, feeling vaguely nauseous. Neil stood on his other side and they crossed to court to the exit, slowly. Kevin stepped on his own foot several times, brain not communicating with his legs properly.
Eventually, they made it to the nurse's office. It took Kevin several seconds to realise that it wasn't the usual one. Abby must have kicked out the other team's nurse, because they were playing another team, weren't they. Right. Of course they were. What were they called again?
Kevin sat on the medical bed, feeling as if he'd had that thought before.
"Can you tell me your name and birthday?" Abby asked.
"Kevin Day." His tongue felt like sandpaper. "Um... Two.... Two?"
"Okay, that's great. Do you feel dizzy, nauseous, or tired?"
"Yes."
Abby nodded. "Neil, can you hold this ice pack in place for me?"
Neil sat down next to Kevin, hand pressing something against the back of his head. His fingers were red.
"Are you bleeding?" Kevin asked, worried.
"No, that's yours." Neil said. "Everyone else is fine. Worry about yourself."
Neil was a liar, so Kevin turned to Andrew. "Is he fine?"
"He is." Andrew said. "The guy who concussed you isn't, though."
"What happened?"
Neil snickered. "What do you think happened?"
Over the next minute, or hour, or day (The passage of time was a foreign concept right now), Abby cleaned the blood off his face and bandaged the wound. Kevin's head continued to throb, and he'd really like to just sleep it off, but Abby was dragging her heels on that matter.
"Give it two hours, and then let him sleep." She told Andrew and Neil.
"Its already been two hours." Kevin tried.
"It hasn't, actually. You two know what to watch out for, right?"
Kevin blinked and they were somewhere else. Neil claimed it was the away team lounge, which implied that they were playing another team. What were they called? Kevin wasn't sure.
"Lay down. We won't let you fall asleep." Andrew said it like a promise, but it just sounded mean to Kevin. Still, he rested his head against the moderately-soft sofa.
"Don't we have a game?" Kevin remembered. He couldn't just lay around if they were meant to be playing.
"Not yet." Neil said, which didn't seem quite right- "Rest. I wouldn't let us miss an exy match, would I?"
That was true. Kevin steadied his breathing, relaxing in the presence of Neil and Andrew. This room didn't spin as much as the court, so Kevin almost preferred it. It would be fine to rest, for a little while at least.
