Chapter Text
Laundry is rarely this quiet.
Usually there’s music, or idle commentary, or something half-played in the background. Today there’s nothing but the quiet drag of cotton against cotton. Gem had wanted it that way.
They sit across from each other on the floor, basket centered between them. Pale spring light filters in through the window, still cold outside, but now less harsh as winter goes out of swing.
Gem sorts through the pile with focused care, folding slower than she usually does. She aligns corners deliberately, presses seams flat with her palm, checks the symmetry before stacking each piece. There’s a visible effort to it.
Across from her, Pearl folds with effortless precision. Sleeves tucked cleanly inward. Edges aligned without much play. Creases smoothed with the side of her hand as if the fabric cooperates automatically. Clearly, it costs her less.
The quiet between them isn’t tense. It’s functional. Comfortable.
But it leaves room for thought.
Pearl notices the small movements she makes without deciding to.
She nudges the basket a little closer to Gem just before Gem reaches for it.
She picks up a towel Gem has already folded and refolds it, tightening the edges.
She takes one of Gem’s shirts from the center of the pile, folds it herself, and sets it neatly onto Gem’s stack without comment.
Gem doesn’t protest. She just keeps going.
Pearl exhales slowly and lifts a hand to smooth her hair back into place, fingers lingering at her temple. The gesture feels like a reset.
She smooths the shirt in her lap again—though it doesn’t need smoothing.
"I don’t really leave room, do I?" she says quietly, almost to the fabric.
Gem pauses mid-fold. Blinks. Then turns toward her.
"For what?"
Pearl doesn’t look up.
"For you to just… handle things."
She shrugs, small and controlled.
"I mean—like I step in before you ask. And I feel like I overdo it sometimes."
Gem watches her for a moment. Not offended. Not confused. Just processing.
"Are you asking if it bothers me?"
Pearl hesitates. Her eyes stay on the cotton stretched between her hands.
"I guess. Or if I’m making it feel like I think you can’t do things yourself."
It’s contained. Behavioral. Observable.
Gem answers almost immediately.
"Not really."
A beat.
"I know you’re not doing it because you think I’m incapable."
She nudges the basket slightly back toward Pearl, reclaiming her side without tension.
"If it bothered me, I’d tell you. Okay?"
There’s no delay. No visible processing. Just clean sincerity.
Pearl’s shoulders loosen by degrees. The next shirt she folds isn’t pulled quite so tight at the seams.
"Is it not… how do I put this?" She glances up briefly now. "Overbearing?"
Gem shakes her head again.
"I don’t think so."
She considers for half a second more, then shrugs lightly.
"It just feels like you’re… sharing the load."
That settles something.
Pearl exhales through her nose, small but steady.
"Okay."
A beat.
"That’s good."
They make only a few trips from the living room and the bedroom. There isn’t much laundry, just enough to divide between them by armfuls. Pearl carries neat, manageable stacks balanced against her hip. Gem insists on taking as much as she can at once, forearms piled high with uneven fabric that threatens to slide with every step.
Drawers open. Closet doors slide. Wood thuds softly as they shut things away.
Pearl slots her sweaters into place with mathematical precision, adjusting the spacing until everything sits flush. Her side of the dresser looks measured, deliberate, almost architectural.
Across from her, Gem attempts to close a drawer that is clearly too full.
She presses down on the top layer of shirts. It resists. She pulls the drawer back open, rearranges the stack, compresses the fabric with both hands, tries again. It catches halfway.
She exhales through her nose, determined, shoves once more-
The drawer slides shut with a soft click.
Gem stays there a moment, hand still resting on the handle, eyes fixed on it like she's waiting for it to spring back out.
"Got it."
Pearl watches from across the room, the faintest smirk tugging at her mouth. Though she doesn't comment.
Gem lets out a breath and drops to sit on the edge of the bed, staring at the floor in front of her.
A beat passes.
Then she looks up at Pearl.
"We should do something today."
Pearl pauses with a folded shirt in her hands. Looks at her.
"Yeah?"
Gem nods. Not elaborating yet, just certain.
Pearl sets the shirt down on her stack and leans back against the dresser, considering.
"Nothing too fancy."
"No," Gem agrees immediately.
Pearl glances toward the window, pale light filtering in.
"Maybe we go out. Lunch." She hesitates only briefly before committing. "Downtown?"
Gem's face brightens in a way that's subtle but unmistakable. The tension in her shoulders eases. Her mouth curves slightly.
"Downtown's good."
She accepts the direction and seems relieved to have one.
Pearl nods once, already turning inward to logistics.
Walking would take too long. There’s a bus stop a few blocks down that runs straight through the area. Twenty minutes, maybe less. Wallet. Transit card. It’s still cold enough for scarves but not heavy coats. She’ll need—
She stops herself when she notices Gem still looking pleased about something, standing there with an open expression she hasn’t quite analyzed. Pearl doesn’t linger on it. Just files it away as contentment and moves on.
Gem straightens suddenly, as if remembering she should contribute.
"I can go look up a few places."
Pearl lifts a brow, fighting a laugh.
"Don’t overthink it, okay?"
Gem shakes her head with confident certainty.
"I won’t. Don’t worry."
Pearl hums softly, unconvinced.
Gem turns toward the hallway.
"I’ll grab my laptop—"
She freezes mid-step.
"Wait… Pearl, where—"
"Living room," Pearl answers immediately, not even looking up.
Gem nods and disappears down the hall.
"Love you!"
Pearl hears the quick retreat of her footsteps and the faint rustle of movement beyond the bedroom.
She closes her last drawer slowly.
The room settles into quiet again.
For a moment, she just stands there, listening to Gem moving around outside—opening something, probably the laptop bag, maybe shifting a chair.
A small breath leaves her.
A restrained smile forms, private and fond.
She will absolutely overthink it.
Gem drops back onto the couch the moment she reaches the living room, laptop already half-open before she’s fully seated. She tucks one leg beneath her, the other folded tight, phone resting within reach. The screen lights her face.
The soft, rapid rhythm of trackpad clicks fills the room. Light keyboard taps. A faint muttering under her breath that isn’t meant to be heard.
"This one’s too loud."
Scroll.
"Two dollar signs? Why two dollar signs. We don’t have enough for two dollar signs."
Another tab opens.
"Is that outdoor seating only? There’s still snow."
Scroll. Zoom in on a photo. Back to reviews.
"Not open yet… That’s fine. That’s fine."
She wasn’t distressed yet. But there were too many variables stacking at once.
One place has excellent reviews but tightly packed tables and a reputation of being loud. Another looks spacious but the menu rotates daily. One is close but doesn’t clearly state indoor seating. Another has a perfect menu but requires a double transfer on the bus.
Each flaw feels disqualifying in isolation. Together, they cancel each other out until nothing stands above the rest.
She opens a blank tab to get away from the noise.
Pearl steps into the living room quietly. She doesn’t announce herself. She pauses in the doorway and takes in the scene.
At least a dozen tabs across the top of the screen and maybe a dozen more compacted.
Gem rereading the same review twice.
Jaw set. Brows drawn in.
Pearl waits.
Then she crosses the room and lowers herself onto the couch beside her. Not too close. Not leaning over. She doesn’t touch the laptop.
"What’ve we got?"
Gem turns slightly and immediately launches.
"Okay, so there’s this café but the seating looks cramped and the reviews say it gets loud around noon, and then there’s this place that looks good but the menu rotates and I don’t know what they’ll actually have, and this one’s closer but I can’t tell if they have booths, and what if it’s crowded? And what if the vibe’s weird? And what if they take too long? And what if—"
The words come quickly, organized but escalating.
Pearl listens. No interruption. No correction.
When Gem pauses to breathe, Pearl asks evenly, "Okay… Uhm— Why don’t we start narrowing things down?"
Gem blinks, recalibrating. Then she nods and turns back to the screen, scanning the top.
"Not loud," she says first. "Not too expensive. Indoor seating. Not too far."
Pearl nods once.
"Which one’s the loudest?"
Gem scans the tabs, clicks into a review, scrolls, then closes a pub’s page decisively.
"Which one’s the farthest?" Pearl says quietly.
Gem points.
Another tab disappears.
Pearl shifts slightly and taps.
"I think we can get rid of this one."
Gem’s shoulders loosen incrementally, "Oh it isn’t even open yet."
Now there are three left.
Gem stares for a few seconds, frowning, clearly stuck.
"I can’t decide, they’re all pretty good."
Pearl glances at the screen. "Hey. If all three are good, we can’t really lose."
Gem exhales through her nose.
"True."
They compare.
One is a familiar spot. Completely predictable. Safe, but dull.
One is an independent place with good reviews, booth seating in photos, direct bus access. But unfamiliar.
The third is interesting, slightly noisier, more unknowns.
Gem lingers on the independent place, scrolling through photos again.
Pearl notices.
"That one looks good," she says. "What do you think?"
Gem's eyes squint.
"It’s new though..."
Pearl leans closer, scanning the menu with her.
Then she stops.
"Hey."
She tilts the laptop slightly and taps a listing.
"They have mac and cheese."
Gem freezes.
Scrolls back up.
Reads it again.
They do.
Pearl’s voice stays level. "So at least, you can get that."
It’s a new place but at least it serves a comfort food, and I’m feeling mac and cheesy right now anyways.
Gem’s shoulders drop in a visible release of tension.
"That’s… okay. Yeah."
Not bright excitement. Not forced enthusiasm. Just finally settled.
Pearl continues the checks.
"Alright, indoor seating?"
"Yup."
"Bus route?"
Gem flips to the transit tab. "We got twenty minutes."
"That’s fine."
Gem closes her laptop gently and exhales.
"Okay. That’s good."
Pearl studies her face. "Yeah?"
Gem nods, firmer now, a small smile forming.
"Yeah."
Gem lags for a second before propping herself up.
"Okay. I’ll get dressed."
Pearl rises at the same time. "I’ll grab my jacket."
They step into the hallway together and nearly bump shoulders. Both pause and there's a smile shared between them for a moment.
The air outside is warming up, but still crisp enough to justify layers.
Gem stands in front of the mirror holding two scarves, hesitating for a beat too long before choosing one and wrapping it decisively.
Pearl checks her purse methodically: wallet, phone, keys, transit card, lip balm, tissues. She zips it closed.
Gem pats her pockets. Phone. Wallet. Keys.
She pauses in the hallway.
"Hey?"
Pearl looks up from tying her shoes.
"Thanks."
"For what?"
"Helping."
Pearl shrugs lightly. "Anytime."
