Chapter Text

“I need you to be calm,” Jack told Samira, putting his hand on the small of her back.

They had just finished having breakfast at a diner where they discussed a research paper.

“What, why?” Samira said, taking in his concerned expression.

“This man behind us has been following us for the past ten minutes. Don’t look back,” he whispered.

Samira suppressed the urge to look back, and allowed Jack to guide her.

“OMG,” Javadi exclaimed, “OMG!” she said, looking down at her tablet.

She was grinning from ear to ear, as she stared at her tablet. Covering her mouth, she started to giggle, and Trinity looked up from her charting, wishing she could have a modicum of that happiness. Oh to be 21 again.

In an annoyed tone she asked, “What now? Crash? You finally have twenty followers?”

Javadi rolled her eyes but her happiness couldn’t be contained. “I can’t believe it. Get over here. I don’t even think they know. Dr. Abbot definitely does not know.”

Trinity, still in her seat, rolled over next to Javadi. “Make this quick. I have to get back to my charting.”

Mel was passing by, looking at her lava lamp on her phone. “Come over here, Mel. Sit with us.” Javadi said, pulling a chair for Mel.

“What are we watching,” Mel asked excitedly. “Are we going to watch that cute little monkey in Japan at the zoo?” she asked putting her phone away.

“Did you know he finally has a girlfriend?” Trinity informed them.

“Awww,” Mel said, but there was sadness there too as she thought about her sister.

“No, even better,” Javadi said, pressing play.

Mel’s eyes widened when she saw Samira and Jack Abbot on the screen.

Jack was wearing a black t-shirt. His biceps are on full display. He was wearing his camo pants and his stance gave off an aura of confidence. Next to him stood Samira, wearing a short sleeve black polo with a white collar with blue jeans.

Trinity whispered, “He looks like a badass, and she looks preppy.”

“Wait,” Javadi said, pausing it. “Just making sure Dr. Robby is not around.” Her eyes darted around the hospital and then she nodded.

“How long is it?” Mel asked.

“It’s like four minutes long.”

“Could you not,” Trinity said, as Whittaker leaned in close. “You’re breathing down my neck.”

Whitaker took a step back. “Sorry. What are you guys watching?"

“You know that guy that goes around and asks people if they are friends?” Javaid asked.

He shook his head no.

“Anyway, look at who he asked?” Javadi said, pointing to the screen.

“Really,” Whitaker said, smiling.

Javadi pressed play again.

“Are you two friends?”

Jack hesitated and looked off to the side as Samira answered the question.

“Yes, we’re friends,” Mohan said happily as a slight frown etched quickly on Jack’s face, but then he seemed to remember he was on camera and a smile quickly appeared.

“How long have you been friends?”

Jack swayed in place as he replied, “Four years, right?”

“Yeah,” Mohan said, licking her lower lip as Jack waited for the next question.

“Where did you two meet?”

“We work in the same hospital!” they said in unison.

“What was your first impression of him?”

Mohan giggled as she looked at Jack. “I thought. I never told him this, but I thought he was very intimidating. I thought he was very serious and he has this very penetrating stare sometimes,” she said, “but once you get to know him, he’s so down to earth and he’s just, just” she stopped. She couldn’t reveal that. She wouldn’t. “He’s very loyal,” she said, instead of lovable.

“How about you, what was your first impression of her?”

“Honestly,” he said, looking at Mohan. “I thought she’s just so smart and she looks like a Disney princess.” Mohan looked away so Jack tapped her so she would look at the camera.

“That’s so cute,” Mel said, adjusting her glasses.

Mohan looked into his hazel eyes then, as if seeing him for the first time and then she swung her gaze away.

“What’s your favorite thing about him?”

Mohan flashed him a smile before answering him. “I like how patient he is. How encouraging he is with me and others.”

She paused and thought for a moment. Just then a stray hair had fallen over her face, and Jack ever so gently put it back in place. “Thanks. I get in my head a lot and he grounds me. There’s a certain calmness to him that makes me feel safe and heard.”

Jack looked away, turning red as she complimented him. “He’s also just really kind and humble. I know I can count on him, if anything ever happens. He’ll be there, and really listen, which I find very rare nowadays." Mohan must’ve been thinking about something specifically because she suddenly got teary-eyed. Quickly she brushed it off, and Jack was looking at her with an unreadable expression, bordering on serious but not quite.

“What do you like about her?”Mohan’s heart started to hammer in her chest as the question was asked. She looked away suddenly bashful and nervous at the same time.

“How much time we got?” Jack asked the interviewer and all of them laughed. Javadi, Mel, Trinity, and Whitaker gasped as they took in what he said.

Mohan looked at him, basking in the heat of his hazel eyes. Jack looked at the camera then and gulped. He tapped her on arm to make sure she was listening.

“She’s,” he started. He knew he was going to ramble and go on and on and he knew this before he started. “Not only is she super intelligent, she’s also compassionate. She talks about me being a good listener, but I think she’s a great listener. Any time I have to say anything she’s there and then she remembers the tiniest of details. She’s the future,” he said looking at Mohan, who lightly smacked him on the arm. “Honesly, if she left, I would leave with her,” he confessed. Mohan looked shocked at his admission. “What? Mohan asked.”

“Yeah, what?” Javadi cried out.

“It’s true. I would,” Jack said, forgetting that they were on camera. “What do the kids say nowadays? You’re my ride or die.”

Mohan looked like she wanted to say more but they were brought back to reality when the interviewer asked. “What’s your favorite thing to do together?”

“He, he got me into MASH. Great show by the way,” she said into the camera.

“We also enjoy reading and playing chess,” Jack grinned.

“Thank you so much. Lastly, what are your names?”

“My name is Samira."

“And I’m Jack. I was named after Jack Kerouac.”

“Really, I didn’t know that,” Mohan said.

“I didn’t know you were named Samira.” Jack joked. They almost held hands as the camera panned out.

“Omg what did we just witness?” Trinity said. “How many views does it have already?”

Javadi checked and said, “It has 750,000 views. It will def get to a million.”

“All right, let’s check out the comments,” Javadi said, curious as to what people were swaying.

I need to go to that hospital ASAP

I wonder if their patients see it?

I wonder if their coworkers know?

She’s so oblivious

Who’s going to tell them?

They are so not friends

Did you see the way he put her stray hair back swoon

What a silver fox!

Aww he called her a princess

Someone needs to tell her

Can’t wait for the wedding

What’s MASH about ?

Don’t know but they need to smash

I want them to be my doctors

Suddenly Mohan appeared and Javadi closed her tablet. Trinity went back to charting and Mel headed for the staircase.

Whitaker looked up the board.
“What were you guys doing?” Mohan asked, standing beside Whitaker.

“Oh, um we were watching someone get earwax taken out. Very satisfying,” he lied.

“I’ll have to check it out sometime. You guys looked really interested.”
