Martin gushes about UDAD, not knowing one of the lead singers is snuggled next to him

Jmart week 2026 Day 2: Bands & The Mechanisms

Work Text:

Jon had not expected to meet a Mechanisms fan, especially so long after their last show. Jon had doubly not expected it to be Martin, his wondrous, ever patient and caring boyfriend. So when Martin joyfully sat down on the sofa “Jon, I need to talk about an Album I like or I possibly will explode so…would you mind if I did?” Jon shook his head, then leaned it on Martin's shoulder “Please, talk to me about anything you’d like,” Martin grinned, “Okay it's by this band called The Mechanisms.” Jon felt himself physically choke at that. He waved away Martin's look of concern “Keep going,” Martin hesitated slightly before nodding “Its a futuristic retelling of the Odyssey,” Technically the Odyssia Jon thought, “Okay, Jonny D’villes voice is pretty always, but this album is just extra so,” Jon stared into the void (metaphorically, though he easily could if he wanted) “why is that?” Jon asked, nestling further into Martins Jumper “It just has an extra gravel to it,”

Jon nodded, he could easily compel the information out of Martin, but it sounded much nicer to hear the words fall from Martin's mouth organically. “It follows him and ‘The Suits’ as they try to get a passcode to the planets only tree left, made by Ulysses, where he buried his wife, Penelope” Martin sounded genuinely really excited (even when Jonny had to play the confused boyfriend over some of the missed details) “You mentioned it was an album?” Jon raised his eyebrow “Whats your favorite song in the album, show me” Jon was interested, Martin's eyes lit up and he grabbed his phone off the coffee table, he quickly searched something, the soft tunes of ‘Trial By Song’ filled the safehouse air, Orpheus’ heavenly vocals followed soon after.

It took an effort for Jon to not sing along, even when he hadn't thought about The Mechanisms for a long while, the songs stayed in his head and narrated his thoughts. Not long after his own voice (admittedly a lot softer than he had heard in…such a long time) came out of the recording. Jon tensed and hoped Martin didn't notice the similarities.

Unfortunately for him, Jon was usually fortunes fool. Martin replayed the song with Jonny's dialogue, then looked between the lyrics on screen, and then his boyfriend. “Wait a minute,” he said. Jon, unfortunately, was never good at hiding his true emotions with people he loved, and his eyes screamed a slight guilt. “You're Jonny D’ville,” Martin said, rather than asked. Jon smiled, bordering on Jonny charisma and his own anxiety “It is I, your humble captain,” Martin elbowed him “First mate,” Jon sighed a deep, deep ‘annoyance’ (his shoulders were bobbing from trying not to giggle. “Im your BOYFRIEND and you won't even give me this,” he kissed Martin's cheek.
