Work Text:
“Why did you do that?” Veronica sounded as if she couldn’t believe she even said those words.
“Veronica, please,” Delilah’s voice broke, tears rolled down her face and her breath hitched, “I didn’t have a choice!”
“They were going to let us walk away,” Veronica shook her head, eyes wide in horror, “why did you attack them?”
“I couldn’t,” Delilah froze, “I couldn’t let them hurt you. I couldn’t run that risk.”
Veronica scoffed, “They are- were- my family, Delilah.” She spat the name as if it was a curse, none of the honey that she used to use.
Delilah held her hand out to Veronica, “Please,” she sobbed, “I did it for you.”
Veronica turned on her heel, and her travelling scribe robe waved in the wind, a final goodbye, as she strode off into the Mojave sun, the corpses of her former comrades left at the feet of their murderer.
The last thing she heard was a broken whisper of her name, from the woman she used to love.
