Chapter Text
"Tails, stop! Please don't do this!"
Sonic's plea fell upon deaf ears as the young fox simply seemed to get even more incensed upon hearing his words.
"DON'T CALL ME THAT!" Miles screamed at the group of Mobians in front of him who, less than a month ago, he would have considered his family.
He couldn't help but scoff at his own naivety.
Family.
The word felt like poison on his lips. He would no longer dare to even think about such frivolity.
He now knew he could only trust himself.
Another wave of almost indestructible robots was sent forward, his exhausted assailants gearing up into defensive positions once more.
Amy Rose, despite wearing a bandage across the side of her body, swung her hammer valiantly, knocking back a few of the robots, but her attacks were nowhere near strong enough to properly cut through the hoard. Knuckles was in a similar situation, although the echidna warrior's strength and inherent Chaos energy seemed to aid him in taking down the Badniks slightly more efficiently than the pink hedgehog.
Miles watched with gritted teeth as the annoying blue hedgehog tried to spin-dash into another one of his machines, his quills leaving only a few scratches along it's side. It took multiple strong and repetitive hits to the same spot to finally actually make a dent. Miles couldn't help but smirk slightly as he watched the group struggle.
For the old Badnik models Doctor Eggman had designed, attacks like these would have cut straight through the metal easily. However, with Miles' upgrades, all of these robots were now far more hardy. They would take a lot more effort to take down.
Speaking of that pathetic excuse of an 'evil genius', he was stood slightly to the side of the group, simply watching uselessly as his beloved creations were now used against him, gradually bringing about this planet's demise.
Miles shook his head and growled to himself, internally berating them all.
Regardless of whether the Doctor was now working with the rodents or not, they would soon all pay for their constant betrayal.
He had come too far to get his revenge. He couldn't stop now.
Miles glanced over to the computer screen beside him.

It wouldn't be long now until the lazer was ready to strike.
He would finish what Eggman started.
They would regret the day they tried to make a fool of Miles Prower.
Soon, they would all pay.

A ball of orange fluff smashed through another Badnik, causing metal pieces to scatter. Tails uncurled and stood back onto his feet, quickly shaking his head to try and dispel the dizziness his actions caused. His breathing was slightly heavy from the ongoing fight, but it only added to the adrenaline rush he always felt in the heat of a battle.
Tails glanced over to the blue hedgehog beside him.
Sonic sent him a cocky smirk and a wink before curling himself up and launching back into the fray.
Tails couldn't help but chuckle in response to his brother's ever-cheerful attitude.
Just another day on the battlefield for Team Sonic!
This fight was sure to be another breeze.

Eggman growled to himself, his spectacles glinting dangerously against the light of his computer screen. His almost deranged gaze bore into the screen, but all he could do for now was continue to watch in dismay as the four Mobians kept ripping through more of his precious robots.
Do these damn pests not understand how much this stuff costs?!?
He clenched his jaw in concentration.
He could not let this fight be yet another failure.
This time, he had a plan.
It was about time he levelled the playing field…
If only that blue nuisance would just stop moving around so damn much!
After what felt like a lifetime of watching his poor beauties fall to this group of savages, he finally spotted an opening.
Sonic had stepped back for just a moment to check on that pathetic fox friend of his.
Eggman tightened his grip on his controller, taking aim at the hedgehog.
Steady… Steady…
His breath caught in his throat as he pressed down on the trigger.
But a second was all it took as suddenly that annoying fox child had pushed his friend to the side to take a hit from a bug-bot which had snuck up on the pair.
Eggman squeaked in consternation as he watched his contraption miss his target and instead hit the fox, with the device quickly implanting itself, hiding underneath the thick fur behind his ear.
Eggman had to bite his lip to stop himself from shrieking too loud; He wanted to pull out his non-existant hair, but instead settled for muttering obscenities loudly to himself in frustration as he paced back and forth.
Sure, the device seemed to have done it's job correctly, in that it was quick to take hold of a host and embed it's chip into a hiding spot upon it's target's head, but the problem was that it had hit the wrong goddamned target!
After a few more aggravated circles had been stormed into the ground, the Doctor stopped to let out an aggrieved sigh, dragging a hand down his face.
He then glanced at the screen to see the results of his efforts gathering and displaying an amalgamation of data about the young fox's brainwaves.
He narrowed his eyes as he glared at the analytics in front of him.
His mouth slowly curved upwards into a sly smirk.
Maybe this could still work out in his favor after all…

Tails was slumped on top of the robot he had crushed, pushing himself up and groaning slightly as he rubbed at his now thobbing head.
"Tails! Are you okay, bud?"
He glanced up, squinting in pain against the sunlight, only to see Sonic bending down with an outstretched hand reaching towards him, concern plastered all over the hedgehog's face.
Tails chuckled slightly, grabbing hold of his brother's hand and letting himself be pulled back up onto his feet. "Yeah, I'm okay…"
Sonic let out an annoyed sigh, keeping hold of the fox's arm to support him, still worried since he seemed to sway slightly once he was standing up again. "Thanks for the save, but you could've gotten seriously hurt!"
Tails huffed out a laugh, and rolled his eyes at the hypocritical hedgehog. "Pfft, yeah, because it would've been so much better if you'd got hurt instead…?!" Sonic grumbled unhappily at his sarcastic tone but simply smirked in response, choosing to instead playfully rustle the kit's bangs.
"Hey! Sonic, stop!" Tails whined, pushing the annoying blue hedgehog away slightly with a laugh, but suddenly winced as a pain shot through his skull. Thankfully, Sonic was still by his side supporting him so was able to catch him before he could fall back to the ground. They both grimaced, sharing a look of understanding for a moment before a voice calling out to them interrupts.
"Are you guys okay??" Amy jogged up to the duo with Knuckles following close behind, both wearing concerned expressions as they regarded the brothers.
"We're good, Ames… Mr Genius over here just thought it would be a good idea to try and dive head-first into an attacking Badnik!" Sonic smirked, glancing down at the ruffled-up fox whose shoulders he had put his arm around, who murmured defensively under his breath but looked away to try and hide his embarassed blush. Amy sent Tails a mildly scolding yet fond look, whilst the young fox pointedly avoided the other's gaze.
"Great work out there today team, thanks for the assist!" Sonic grinned at them as he spoke, Amy beaming happily at the praise and Knuckles nodding in acknowledgement, but otherwise schooling his features and continuing to stand with his arms crossed as he kept suspiciously scanning their surroundings.
The quartet trudged back to the Tornado together, ready to head back to their respective homes. Tails walked a few steps behind the other three who continued to chat away, lost in his own thoughts.
He stopped for a moment and chanced a glance back, looking out over the battlefield full of destroyed machines one final time. There was a strange, niggling feeling in the back of his mind, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what was wrong.
For a few seconds he simply stood there to feel the wind rustling his fur, glad to let it's cool breeze help ease the slight ache that was still gently gnawing against his head.
He heard his friends call his name and took a calming breath before turning back around to make his way to his plane.
They had won.
There was nothing to worry about.
Right?
