Work Text:
"Hey, do you think Cuddy would mind if we, say, go out for a bit? Get some fresh air, vitamin D. Very good stuff."
It was quite a busy day at the clinic. Of course, going out to 'get some fresh air' wasn't that good of an idea, but House figured Cameron and Foreman could handle his patients for a bit. They'd probably get through them faster than he would, anyway.
"I don't think she would ever not mind, but... Sure. Just don't mention me when she catches you trying to shave some time off of your clinic hours," Wilson sighed. He needed to get out too, honestly. And he wasn't currently dealing with too many patients so he supposed he had a little time. "just don't mention me at all, actually. I don't think I'm supposed to be taking walks either."
"Oh? Then why are you following me? If I recall correctly, you're a good boy. So shouldn't you be kissing someone's ass right about now?" House remarked, not even looking over at Wilson, but he swore he could hear a soft sigh. "And I don't mean mine. It's off-limits to good boys who certainly always do what they're told. I'm hardcore, you know."
"I'm not trying to- to kiss your ass. I'm going on a friendly walk with you because the weather is nice and my office lacks AC. There is a difference there - a very big one, actually." Wilson protested, fiddling with something in his pocket as he caught up to House. He was deceptively fast when he wanted to be, even with his bum leg.
"So poor James Wilson is going on a friendly walk with his 'friend' because his office is an oven and the sun is out. Got it."
"Do I always need to have ulterior motives?" Wilson sighed, narrowly avoiding collision with a small child on the sidewalk.
House stopped abruptly, letting Wilson walk right into him. "You? Yes." he said lightly before starting to walk again. "You're willing to face Cuddy's wrath for a little buddy time with me." House looked over his shoulder, "Not that I'm complaining."
"I- I just think the weather is nice and my office is stuffy," Wilson protested, shoving his hands in his pockets. Arguing with the back of House's head felt like talking to a brick wall sometimes; except the brick wall responded with snide comments and rude, unfiltered thoughts, instead of silence.
"Ah - you stuttered. What are you thinking about." House stopped again. An elderly man barely avoided crashing into him. "When you stutter you're either guilty, excited or both."
Wilson sighed again, reluctantly stepping aside for the elderly man. "It's nothing. I just think we should walk and... maybe talk a bit less."
"Hmm, sorry. I'm afraid this game only has one ending. There are no dialogue options. It's like a book, see. You just have to read it and see where it goes." House started walking yet again, but thankfully slower this time. "And I was right. You're guilty. Sleep with the new intern and now you're avoiding her?"
"Wh- what? I didn't even know we had a new intern. No one told me," Wilson huffed, a smile of mild disbelief on his face. "and I have a wife."
"Yeah. We have no new interns." House stopped walking again. "And a wife? Well, I can't recall that ever stopping you before."
Now that was just too personal. "Oh, come on. You're an ass."
"So I've been told."
House suddenly took a sharp left, leaving Wilson sputtering on the corner of the street. God. That man.
"Are you walking away from me now or is this a tactic to get me to admit to something I've never even done?" Wilson asked, catching up to House and planting his feet in front of him.
"Hm. Why not both?"
God.
Wilson sighed.
"Are you pushing everything onto me because you did something you don't want to admit? Is that it?"
House pushed past him, paying no mind to his frustrated sputtering. "Did? No. Nooo. I'm just so excited to rail you on a park bench in broad daylight."
"That wasn't a joke, was it." Wilson accused, putting a hand on House's shoulder to stop him from walking away again. House stayed silent, thinking. Then he turned around.
"Might've been. Might not have been. It's such a relief that people can't read minds. Except me, of course. It's my favourite special ability,"
Wilson huffed. "You're an insufferable ass. And I repeat, I've got a wife." And he left, leaving House standing there, completely motionless as people stared.
"The plan was to do it an alley, by the way. A bit more privacy!" House yelled after Wilson as he walked away. But he didn't move. He just watched Wilson slowly, very slowly becoming smaller and smaller as he made his way back to the clinic.
After a minute of consideration, House followed.
