Chapter Text

xX. Run baby run, Don't ever look back .Xx

It was the end of the week, and the pitter-patter of Richard Grayson's furious typing blended with the rain drops splattering against the windows in his bedroom. The young boy of fourteen was determined to complete the dreadful paper he had to do for school. Luckily, he had only one paragraph to go, and then he could finally knock-out for the evening. There was no way he’d have the rest of the weekend to work on it with all the responsibilities that came from being Batman’s partner.

Only hours before, he had been swinging across the beams of an old warehouse by the Atlantic, dealing with the newest (and probably one of the most disgusting) villains they’ve have had yet. He knew he was, likely, only going to manage a C+ at most for this assignment. Knowing this made it maddening, at times, that he will never be able to explain to his teachers that he’s not irresponsible. If anything, he was riddled with responsibility. Thankfully, Batman was, currently, out with Jason showing him the ropes. Someday, the kid was going to take his place as the Boy Wonder; but for now, this Robin was just happy to get a break. Even if “said break” was something as monotonous as writing about the OBVIOUS so-called ‘hidden’ themes in The Great Gatsby.

At least, he figured he'd feel relief once he could hit “print”, but then the buzz of obligation whirred in his pocket. His fingers twitched, itching to throw it across the room and feign ignorance when he realized it was from the "Robin" phone. Partially, because he was out of steam when it came to ass-kicking. However, it was also because of the unpleasant frustration of loneliness that hissed at the back of his mind when he really should have guessed it would be “hero stuff”. It’s not like anyone from school would ever be inviting loner, dweeb Richard Grayson out for the weekend.

"Go for Robin." He answered, voice flat.

"It's Kid Flash…Dick." From the other side of the line, he could hear delighted chortles.

Dick blew out a deep exhale, more affronted over how un-clever Wally was than the use of his name on the Young Justice, confidential line, "what did I say about that?"

"You’re positively, absolutely, right. I shouldn’t be goin’ around callin’ people dick just because they answer the phone like a robo-automated whatever," mockery stained his words.

Robo-automated…? Fine.

"……Hi! Thank-you for calling the phone of. Robin. Partner of. The Batman. How may I help you today?"

“Ha-ha, clever s–“

“I’m sorry. I didn’t get that.”

“I–“

“–’m sorry. I didn’t get that. Press ‘1’ for English or Press ‘2’ for Spanish.”

“Alright,YouCanSt–“

“You pressed, 2: pendejo.”

“Sto–“

“Pendejo.”

“Rob–“

“Pendejo. Pendejo. Pen–“

Wally growled from the other side, "Ohmygawd! I GIVE. You win. Whatever dude, so what are you up to?"

It always uplifted Dick’s mood when he managed to out bug other people into submission. Not his fault he was raised on Spider-man comics and trained by the world’s best – Alfred Pennyworth. Such tomfoolery was modeled to him by his undefeated, skillful mentor, especially when Bruce dared to challenge Alfie whenever Family Feud came on during morning breakfast: (“Ah sir, the category looks to be ‘completely normal and appropriate ways to respond to neighbors in the morning’. Now, if you need my help, just remember…people prefer a small wave over animal grunting.”).

"Homework. Almost done actually. We captured Flamingo early tonight. Not too hard to find when the criminal comes in flying on a giant pink jet at the beach." He explained as he gathered said homework into his hands, fresh off the printer.

A confused grunt came from the speaker, "Flamingo?"

Mischief bloomed onto Dick's face; he lived to highlight to his teammates just how loony the bad guys in Gotham were. He knows it’s disconcerting (heavy on the 'dis') to play the ‘who has it worse’ game when it comes to criminals…but he was also a naturally competitive, pre-teen, one-upper. So, yeah.

"Psychopath who eats people's faces off after sexually assaulting them," he explained with his most uninterested voice waiting to hear the boy's reaction.

"…what a fuckin’ creep. IDon’tEvenWanna– what?!” Absolutely mortified: Mission success.

"You asked."

“Tell Bruce Wayne to stop pollutin’ the drinkin' water with his factories. It’s his fault.”

“Shut up, Kid Dork.”

Wally laughed at his fluster. Dick could hear a fleeting vroom of a zipper. From the sound of it, he was now changing out of his uniform, “all Billionaires ruin the world, Rob. I know you’re on reddit during toilet time, you should know this. Anywho, I just finished patrol, what time is it over there?"

He massaged his throbbing temples, sometimes Kid Flash could really be Kid Clueless"…Same time as you genius. We're in the same time zone."

"DUDE!"

Dick’s cackle rung out like chimes, "Dude, apparently you can get an 'A' in AP Physics yet fail basic geography."

"…HowDidYouKnowThat?"

"No frickin’ way."

"Whoa There pal! Not everyone can be perfect, Boy Wonder," Wally huffed out, but there was zero indignation.

As he picked up his ten-page paper on how F. Scott Fitzgerald weaved homoerotic themes throughout the book with the use of: descriptive, sexually suggestive scenes through the story; masculine portrayal of female-identifying characters; Nick Carraway’s obsession over Jay Gatsby – and, not to mention considerations for the rampant homophobia in the roaring twenties at the time it was published; ending with three pages of citations attached to the back…Dick insisted, "hey, totally not perfect.”

"Wanna bet?" The speedster challenged

"Wouldn't betting on myself to be ‘imperfect’ be a little self-depreciating?"

Wally whistled, "You have a point, my guy. You're too cocky to have low self-esteem."

"Me? I’m too cocky? Coming from Mr. Hey babe, even when you’re salty, you’re sodium fine?”

"First off, as a future chemist, I am obligated to use that in the future, good one Rob. Second, Haven’tAClueWhatYou'reTalkin’About…”

Abruptly, there was an unsettling shift in Wally's tone, but Dick chose not to read into it "…and...I haven't been that way, lately, anyway."

“Don't know ‘bout that." There was a brief pause, and the younger of the two wasn’t sure what to do with the silence except to let it sit.

Eventually, Wally asked with unfamiliar worry, "wait. Have I? I can stop y’know."

Dick was weirded out by this new form of insecurity coming from him. He was used to making fun of the older teen for being a flirt. Sure, it could get annoying, but it wasn’t a character flaw, "KF, it's no big deal to me if you show off to whoever you want. I was just messing with you.”

But then the speedster fell back into silence, which wasn't normal for Wallace Rudolph West.

"Hello, earth to Walls?"

"Wanna hang out tonight?"

Dick quirked his brow, surprised by the sudden offer. He glanced at the clock before hurling himself onto the pile of dirty laundry that littered his bed, "I wish, but it's like nine, dude."

"We don't have school tomorrow or any big team missions."

Turning his body so he was facing the glass door to the balcony, he watched the hair thin streams pour down his reflection, "yeah, I know…but I don't think Bruce or Alf will be too concerted with me leaving the house right now."

Wally scoffed with loud theatrics, "So?! It's the weekend!"

"So?" he challenged, "what do you mean so? This is Batman. Remember? The guy who spooks Green Lanterns?”

"SO! We need to brainstorm a workaround."

Wally hummed brightly as he thought aloud, totally unmoved by the fear of intimidation by the dark knight. That's something Dick liked about Wally, everything he did always drew attention to the lightness he exuded. His playfulness always reminded him to just…live, out loud. He could turn a chase into a race; hand-to-hand combat into a dance; an investigation into a mystery; evidence into souvenirs; arguments into a funny memory; a free fall into soaring.

It’s what made it nearly impossible for Dick to ignore all of his foolish ideas. Without Wally, he’s not so confident the part of him that knew how to stay fun and goofy would have survived life without his…safety net.

"WeCouldHangHereInCentralCity! I'm staying with Uncle Barry right now, he won't mind."

Dick swallowed down the temptation to agree and decided to argue back instead with: "and how would I get there? Sorry Walls, but no way am I riding the R-Cycle out in the rain. I seriously wish. But it's too beat up from when Jason borrowed it." He sighed at the thought of his poor 'baby' wrecked up in the garage. That's what he got for being nice to the little squirt.

"That sucks…I can run over there?" Wally suggested, a tad too eager.

Dick frowned, spending a Friday night alone was not very exhilarating. And having his teammates always helped soothe that embarrassing feeling of loneliness that came from his lack of civilian life. Wally probably sensed that small flicker of desire asking to have his mind changed. But Dick always had a difficult time not following Batman’s orders and Alfred’s rules. As a crime-fighting hero, he did not fear lightning and thunder. But the 9-year-old that had the confidence of where he belonged stolen away from him? He knew there were worst things in life to fear.

"Let me reiterate. It's raining. Buckets."

"And?" Wally didn’t have the wherewithal to consider future consequences, but impulsive thinking is also what made speedsters some of their most courageous heroes. It’s why Robin knows how to be brave when they’re with Young Justice. Robin may overdo it most times and get accused of being the one without discipline. But even though his team wouldn’t believe it (because they have only ever experienced Dick in a setting where Bruce wasn’t looming over his shoulder), he envied Wally’s ability to think in black and white, jumping in to follow his heart, instead of always living in careful greys.

"And you're an idiot if you come down here right now. We can hang on a different day."

“ButYouNeverTakeTheDayOff!"

"Tomorrow?" Dick knew it was a weak offer, knowing very well he had training to do for Jason, and truly…if he could run away with Wally fearlessly, tonight, he would.

"Tomorrow, Poison Ivy is probably going to break out, again, and you're going to have to spend the whole day tryin’ to catch her," Kid Flash whined

Robin grinned, he couldn't help himself, "You could be wrong, what if it's Penguin?"

Wally swore under his breath, and Dick snickered, "Dude, not the point."

"Sorry, it's just not going to happen." And he really was sorry; it all just didn't sound like a very good idea right now.

"Unless you sneak out."

Dick promptly pushed down the reflexive thrill to just say ‘Yes’ and leave. Wally had to know, in his core, he wanted to go. But that unsure 9-year-old inside of him that sat on the very bed he laid in, waiting to be told this was all just temporary, and no one was coming to save him…whispered out:

“I can’t.”

“You act like you’re not famous for being an escape artist with villains.”

"KF, I'm not going to sneak out; I'm really not in the mood to have an overgrown man crying about where I am and another one ready to spank my ass when I got home. Also, who’s to say they wouldn’t kick me out for being dumb?"

The speedster wasn't convinced, "Batman won't find out, so I'm sure you're safe from any ass whoopin’. And Alfred will be alright."

"Walls, other way around."

"Seriously?"

Dick nodded, eyes closed, working to block out that one night he almost became a tragedy, "since the last time I got kidnapped by Two-faced? Yeah."

Bruce never really got over it; he was always extra protective since then. He knew he’d never convince Dick to hang up the cape, but it did contribute to why he thought Robin could benefit from working with Young Justice. It was another one of Bruce’s attempts to replace…the safety net.

"Then why would they ever get rid of you if they’re that worried? Please sneak out? Just once? ItWouldn’tBeThatBad. Dumb? Duh! ButThat’sThePoint." Yet Wally couldn't be dissuaded, and his increased word jambles only signified determination.

"I do wanna hang out, but I don't know if it's a good idea…"

"Fine, if this is how it’s gonna be, have it your way."

"Come on Wal–" Dick started, but before he could even finish, he heard the disappointing click from the other side.

“Hanging up when you don't get your way. Real mature for sixteen." He muttered to himself. Wally could never understand how sneaking out behind the Batman's back was a no-go.

Sure, maybe he was just being too careful, but he didn’t believe there would ever be a time he would feel okay with going against Batman’s orders. He was probably going to become Batman, himself, one day. It was his duty to carry the responsibilities of being Bruce Wayne’s ward. It was his solace from all the loss and screaming grief that changed everything for him. How could Wally ever understand what it was like always waiting for the worst-case scenario to happen?

Dick rolled onto his back and started counting the shadows dancing across the ceiling. Sometimes he wished he wasn’t always the one who had the contingency plans and loyalty to whatever Batman commanded. He wished he could erase his need to stop waiting for the guarantee that things would be okay even if he made a mistake. He wished he could be more like Wally and be brave. Not about superhero stuff, but about…the hard stuff.

Suddenly.

There were purposeful taps against the window.

Dick swiftly moved to the balcony, careful not to let himself be seen. He stood to the side of the glass door behind the long drapes waiting for the tapping to return, but when it did, he didn't expect pebbles being tossed at his window. It, then, clicked in his mind what was going on.

Dick found himself glaring down to a soaked red headed teen standing at the bottom waving back up looking rather proud of himself.

"KF! What are you doing here?" Dick demanded in a harsh whisper not wanting to make a scene and attract Alfred's attention.

Wally shook his head as if the answer were obvious, "Rob, I told you! It'sAFridayNight.Let’sGetGoin’!"

"Keep it down…" Dick warned, gesturing towards the manor"…and I told you I couldn't."

Wally looked up at him with bold determination. There was no one, not even Black Canary, that could ever torture Dick into admitting to the flutters in his chest when those eyes were a forest on fire.

“I'm not leaving. You’re too young to be acting forty. Let’s escape this place.”

Dick rubbed at his eyes, already feeling the breakdown of his resolve dissolve away any tiredness he felt before, "how'd you even know where to find me?"

The speedster had the nerve to give him a teasing grin, "Dude, you're Richard Grayson. Son of Bruce Wayne. Everyone knows where you live without the white pages. Rich people problems, amirite?"

Dick couldn’t conceal his smile. However, after all that back-and-forth, he couldn’t just leave this easily, "don’t group me with rich people…Wally, go home. I can't let you in. Bruce and Alf don't even know that you know who I am."

Both boys narrowed their eyes with no plans on breaking, "I won't go until you come outside."

"KF…" Robin started, but then he shivered with the cold. He didn't want Kid Flash getting sick because of him, even if Wally was the one being a ridiculous dweeb. And all Dick really wanted was to be convinced out of duty. Plus, it was only his best friend that could make him feel safe enough to take stupid risks, and he was already out here waiting for him "…Fine."

"WHOO!" The speedster jumped in the air pumping his fist high in celebration, the thrill flickering inside of Dick was now a full flame.

"Shush, Kid Mouth," Robin reminded him placing a finger over his lips, "like covert missions, sneaking out requires stealth. I know it's still something a little difficult for you to grasp, but really?"

Wally motioned a zip to his lips and blew him a kiss. There he goes, being a flirt to just about everybody and anybody.

Dick turned back and hastily changed into jeans, shirt and a hoodie. However, heavy footsteps came towards his door. In a hurry, he switched off the lights and grabbed his sneakers without time to pull them on. All before bolting towards the balcony launching himself off of the railing with the expectancy for his best friend to catch him.

The air flurried around him as the weight of his body propelled towards the ground,

but catch him, Wally always did.

"Now what?" Dick inquired, face close enough to see the sprinkle of water specks littering his freckles. The warmth of Wally’s smile melted away all his previous concerns like sunshine at the tail end of a storm.

Wally leaned in and whispered, fondness pouring from his words, "now? I carry you off to adventure. Lace up your shoes; we're going for a ride."

Dick forced all his focus into tying up his converse and attempted to ignore the heat on his face, "I told you, you guys aren't allowed to carry me bridal style anymore, I'm sick of it."

"Come on! How else am I supposed to–" Both of the boys froze as a blanket of white lit up the grass, "oh shit."

"KF. We need to get out here fast, and now."

The speedster nodded his head fiercely, "AyeAye,OnYourCommand!"

Cradling the smaller teen, he hurried along the edges of the estate hoping to evade the security lights. Unfortunately, he failed to miss the older gentleman in the robe with the flashlight.

"Master Richard!" Alfred cried seeing the young ward in the strange teen's arms. Because Wally didn't have his uniform, it was clear he didn’t realize it was a fellow member of Young Justice.

"Dick!" Bruce yelled out, running up to them unmasked and with Jason trailing behind.

Dick wrapped himself tighter against Wally’s chest as fear overtook him. They’d been caught sneaking out, and now he had one of two choices. Face the consequences or…"Run, Wally! Run!"

A sliver of regret hit him witnessing the hopelessness in Bruce's eyes, because he wouldn't be able to save his son without compromising their identities. But the terror faded away into recognition, absolute irritation, and fury once Wally took Dick’s orders and dashed them out of the estate.

Batman was going to be angrier over the fact it was Kid Flash than the actual act of sneaking out, but that was something Dick wouldn’t find out until tomorrow.

For now, the exhilaration of breaking the rules, zipping through the rain, and looking up at Wally’s glee made it all worth it.

Dick's body rocked up and down, occasionally being lightly tossed, as Wally's body shook and vibrated with every step pushing into the ground and forcing them forward. He had to cover his face with his arm to block the splintering drops of water coming at them at furious speeds. Lucky for Wally, he always carried his signature red goggles.

When they were sure they were in the clear and out of the city, Kid Flash slowed his pace. On the outskirts of Gotham, the sky was already starting to clear up. Dick could feel Wally’s heart thrum rapidly in his chest. He supposed it was from running, but he couldn't recall if it ever beat this fast before.

"Your clothes aren't bugged are they?" Wally asked, interrupting his overthinking.

"No…" Dick reassured, before flailing his arms exclaiming, "but I'm totally dead when I get home!"

"But isn't this exciting?" Wally beamed at him

"Exciting?" Dick hopped out of the boy's arms, "we're both crime fighting teenage capes that go against blood-thirsty villains in death defying situations on a regular basis and you ask me if this is exciting?"

"Yep." Wally grinned

"Dude! We just snuck out with Batman watching. Duh, this is exciting!" They threw out their arms and touched knuckles. Dick was grateful that he had a sunbeam, like Wally, who refused to let him forget how to act his age.

"Come on, rain probably won't let up for another hour. Let's find a place to grab a bite." Wally gestured to the row of Midwest, family restaurants that littered the highway.

"But I already ate."

"Whatcha eat?" Wally challenged

Dick's stomach grumbled, "Well….Alf made smoked salmon."

"Soooooo…Pizza?"

"You know it."

(Ooh no, baby, please don’t go…) they settled themselves into a red, cushy booth at the back of the homey parlor. The walls glowed yellow, and there was a gentle rumble of cars passing by with the trickle of rain. In between hushed conversations of diners, an old granola dad playlist murmured through the air (If you leave me now, you’ll take away the biggest part of me…). A young, lovely blonde in an apron and paper hat approached them, "Hello boys, can I interest you in anything?"

"Yeah, we'll take one meat lover's with extra cheese," Wally ordered not really looking at her. The girl nodded and scribbled onto her notepad. Dick cocked his head at the scene playing out.

"Alright, anything else?"

Wally touched his fingers to his lips humming before declaring, "Two root beers!"

"Your order will be done in about fifteen minutes," Wally gave a polite nod, and the lovely girl giggled sweetly before turning on her heel to head towards the kitchen. Without fanfare, he turned to face the other teen, folding his hands behind his head. Dick was flabberghasted.

"Alright, I'm disturbed. Heavy on the 'dis' Wally."

"Why?"

"Didn't you see her?" he interrogated, dumbfounded. He wasn’t really that interested in dating right now, but even he could recognize that their waitress was undeniably pretty.

Wally set his arms down, scratching at his head, "Er…yeah?"

Dick leaned his forehead against his hand thinking loudly, "She was, well…cute."

"So?"

"Why didn't you get her number? Chat her up? Turn up the ‘Wall-Man’ charm?"

"You told me I've been doing it too much. So, I stopped." Wally explained, like it was that simple.

He was lost; he didn't understand what the big deal was about that. He genuinely didn't want someone so important to him thinking he judged him for being flirty. It was a part of what made Wally…Wally.

"Dude, I told you that it's no biggie to me if you flirt with whoever you want, whenever."

Wally flinched inwardly, avoiding Dick’s eyes choosing to settle his gaze on the splashing droplets painting the window beside them. It was a minute of uneasy quiet before he admitted, "I just don't want to.”

Robin could feel his hackles rise; something was definitely up. This was the third time in one night Wally had been silent. He didn't call him Kid Mouth for nothing. Something was wrong and he was going to investigate.

"Why?"

"Dick…" a strange twist of unfamiliarity wrapped up his insides at the reverence in how Wally uttered his name. This was the same timbre for when he went off about how much he admired his Uncle Barry. The voice for when he talked to Aunt Iris on the phone.  It was the tender graciousness for whenever he needed to comfort someone.

"ILikeYou."

“…slower?”

(You fill up my senses…)

“Um…I…I like you.”

It was the voice Wally used to display affection.

(Like a sleepy blue ocean…)

Pale hands tapped anxiously at the linoleum, and tan freckled ones held them still with warm reassurance. Reassurance for what? Dick wasn’t sure, but the inside of his head was static. He was usually able to, at least, fake a cool head for just about anything, but these feelings and this touching was so new to the young pre-teen.

With a gentle, confident voice, he squeezed their hands and Wally confessed as steadily as he could, "I didn't run out here in the pouring rain just to hang out."

Again, Dick has never dealt with crushes or dating before. His stomach churned, uncomfortably, in the struggle between feeling mortified that he was so inexperienced he didn’t realize Wally’s plan and embarrassed of how unready he was for this occasion.

"You…like…me." Dick spoke each word with cautious delicacy.

(Come let me love you…)

"Yep, sure do."

(Let me drown in your laughter…)

"In the same way you like Artemis or M’gann?" Dick’s voice cracked a few pitches, puberty making its first appearance. Wally didn’t even take the opportunity to tease him, which was ultimately how he knew his best friend was serious.

"For starters, Artemis sucks…" Wally frowned at him, before attempting a nervous smile, "…and...no…I well…I like you so much more than that, Dick."

Instantly, they were both very aware of each other's fingers. The subdued melody of something he’s heard Bruce put on sung in the background, engulfing them (Let me always be with you…).

"I-I…I don't know what to say?"

The older teen seemed to be just as terrified as Dick, just as unsure about what was going to happen next. They were stuck waiting. For what? He hadn’t any clue. All the same, they couldn't just remain in this moment forever. So, at some point (You fill up my senses like a night in a forest…) Wally decided he needed to be the brave one…as always…about…hard stuff.

"Well?"

"Well what?" Dick contended distantly.

(Games, changes, and fears…)

Hurt etched into Wally’s face, but Dick was helpless to fix it. He didn’t make this happen. It wasn’t going to be his fault if their friendship might not come back from this. He would have never risked something as important as what they have. The tension in their booth was palpable, even as the jukebox transitioned into something more modern and sweeter (I believe that fate has brought us here...).

"I just confessed to you, and you've got nothing to say?"

His heart dropped with the weight of guilt that he was certain shouldn’t be his to carry (I play it off but I'm dreaming of you...and I'll keep my cool, but I'm feigning...).

"I…" Dick carefully untangled his fingers from Wally’s.

"I'm sorry."

(I try to say goodbye and I choke…I try to walk away and I stumble…) whatever blaze that had been burning in Wally’s eyes before had been quickly snuffed out.

"I get it."

(Though I try to hide it, it’s clear…) If Harvey Dent didn't almost kill him that one time, those three words did (My world crumbles when you are not near…).

Desperately, he didn’t want this to be the reason the greatest friendship he’s ever had – the first real one, honestly – to break apart. With everyone else, he waited for his biggest mistakes to be the reason they decided he was too much to deal with. So, he always tried too hard to prove he was necessary, instead of tirelessly useless. Useless, just like in that moment when his world collapsed around him in…a free fall…a violent fall. But when he was with Wally, he never felt secretly horrible even after their worst arguments. He always knew that there was someone who didn’t need him to be perfect Boy Wonder – just Dick Grayson. He needed his best friend who always knew how to interrupt all his overthinking, because Wally is a sunbeam: warm and filled with playful light.

Dick could see the shuffle in Wally’s head, trying to figure out how to fix this, because that’s just who he is – a fixer. And fixing was a skill he learned when he was 6 years old and his parents decided they didn’t need to hide their arguments from him. Dick, sorely, didn’t want to be another person in Wally’s life that forced him to fix the hard stuff:

"A year," he coughed into his hand and looked away at the checkered floor.

"Huh?" Wally broke away from his internal scramble.

Dick looked up at him with more determination, "check back in a year, I mean…."

"What? I don't–"

"I'm just…I'm only fourteen Walls. I haven’t even thought of anyone in that way…you know my life isn’t that normal, so it’s never been on my mind…" Dick interrupted, because he needed to rush these words out before he lost his resolve.

“It’s okay, Dick you don’t–“

"–’sides, Bruce would never approve. No offense. But he doesn't like you much or the idea of me going out at all…right now, at least."

Understanding was finally shared between them, that this was as brave as Dick was going to get. But he wasn’t wrong about being too young to make a commitment. He’s never been anyone’s…boyfriend. But he cared enough as a best friend to know that being something as big as that meant risking his inexperience in working on the hard stuff might ruin everything. Not even Bruce knows how to be something so big and important without his stuff being in the way.

"Ok."

"Ok?" Dick smiled at him

"Yeah, it's ok." But Wally wouldn't return it.

Before Dick could ask if he meant ‘it was OK he didn't feel the same’ or ‘OK he would wait a year’, their food arrived.

"Here's your order, boys." The lovely blonde set down the tray of oozing cheese and greasy meat alongside two ice cold root beers.

"Thanks, Gorgeous," Wally winked at her, and Dick froze in place as all of his words crumpled and faded away.

"Say, what are you doing tomorrow?"

Later that night, Kid Flash got the girl's number and Robin…he didn't know how he felt about it. But as soon as they stepped outside, Batman was waiting for them. Alongside him was Flash. Needless to say, they were so dead.

And although the two of them felt utterly doomed, one of them couldn't help but feel hope rise within them.

xX. They'll tear us apart if you give them the chance .Xx

Notes:

This story is based on the song "Check Yet Juliet" by We the Kings.

About 15 years ago, when I was a senior in high school graduating, I was really into writing BirdFlash fanfiction. 'Check Yes, Juliet' was my pride and joy. When I re-read the original, I was reminded of how much I believed in the idea of true love overcoming anything. However, I could read how much I was fighting to understand why people could be flippant in their promises, unsure about their feelings, etc...etc...

Now that I'm a full on adult that has experienced...a lot...I was happy to re-work this story with more understanding of mental health struggles, how death-loss impacts us, and how attachment comes into play.

I tried to keep it as close to the original storyline, wording, as possible.

The songs playing in the pizza parlor are:
1. "If You leave me now" by Chicago
2. "Annie's Song" by John Denver
3. "I Try" by Macy Gray

If you read my TimKon fic, "All the Ways to say I Love You Except for I Love You", this fic (CYJ) is a companion fic for the sequel: "Check Yes Juliet: The Remix". It' focused on Dick&Wally, but the comicbook version. And Tim and Kon have a major role helping Dick bring Wally back.

This fic (CYJ) isn't required to be read in order to read the sequel (for now). But it can be helpful. I'm telling you right now, because if you recognize certain themes or phrases it's on purpose. Maybe my little note will make more sense later. Alright, stay tuned!
