“How dare you stand against me!” Her voice was cold and sharp, very different from the sickly sweet tone she used for guests and fighters. “I told you not to save him! And yet you did! He could have died a warrior's death, but you saved him instead.” A slap rang out across the room and Frida winced. “I know you are both turtles, but he is a mutant, not a kappa. Keep in mind where your loyalty lies. And to think after everything I’ve done for you!”
“I know, mother, but you promised you would not put him in for the kill.”
“I did not break my promise! I just altered the terms.” Her mother glared at her through her glasses. “This is a scandal! People think I ordered you to do that! That I have favorites!”
“But didn’t you?”
“I might, but I don't help them.”
“The turtle is an ally currently. Would you like for his entire clan to come?” Frida spoke with false confidence. “Including Lu Ji—”
“Don’t you DARE bring that man into this! He was before you and has no relation to you, girl.”
“I did not want the blue turtle to fail because if he did his fans would be angry. They love him, even if he dresses so they don’t know who he is.”
“I shall make an announcement. You are lucky I like you, kappa.” She frowned. “But that may fade if you don’t prove your worth.”
“You don’t mean—”
“A Nexus battle, no favorites when assigning your opponent.” Mother said. “A public punishment for the problems you have caused me, as you deserve.” Her expression softened, and she was back to that sweet tone. “I love you dear, more than anyone else can, but you can not disobey me. That would make you a bad daughter, wouldn't it?” Frida nodded. “You don’t want to be a bad daughter, do you?” Frida shook her head.
“No, mother.”
“I have raised you, I have clothed you, I have put a roof over your head and made you my heir. And this is how you repay me? No, Frida. You owe me everything, including your life.”
“Yes, mother.” And she did. Even if she disagreed with her mother, she still did. Even if she was angry, she shouldn’t be a bad daughter. Her mother had given her so much, and she owed her everything she had and was.
A battle would be okay. After all, she didn’t know why she had thrown a knife to Blue's enemy, just that she had done it. And somehow, despite being so far away, she had made it. A clean kill.
Right through the head.
Frida hated fighting in the Nexus, though fighting in general was fun. It was the eyes on her that scared her. She didn’t like being the center of attention, but now she had to be. But she owed her mother.
And anyone who owed Big Mama a debt and didn’t pay it? They were disposed of.
“I’m glad you are so willing, turtley-boo. Just remember, mercy is painful, and ruthlessness is what gets you far. Do not fail me, darling.”
Frida did not want to be disposed of.
