"Oh, it's a cat!"
Looking where her sister pointed, there was indeed a cat. Gray, with no collar.
Immediately, every surrounding sound and object disappeared; her vision pinpointed on the sole animal in front of her.
Kneeling on the cold ground, she readied herself.
Nightfall is nigh.
Dignity is astray.
Indulgence is ablaze, and so..
She held out a paw.
Its ears and tail stood, but it didn't move.
"Meow meow."
With that signal call, however, it began to move towards her.
It sat down in front of her, almost too politely. So, she moved her hand closer, and it slowly held out its own paw in response.
It was mere inches away.
Now centimeters.
And then…
Click!
A sudden flash scared the cat away, scurrying back into the unknown realm of the bushes.
"Oh? I thought the flash was off.."
She sighed, hanging her head low.
"Huh? Where did it go?"
"It ran away."
"Oh, that's unfortunate... Ah, but Shii-chan, look!"
Her sister knelt beside her, positioning the phone in view.
A photo was shown, featuring her and the cat that was about to touch her hand. It wasn't apparent then, but her face had this concerning, maternal look.
Just from looking at the photo, the cat bolting away didn't seem all bad.
"Cute, isn't it?"
She smiled.
"Yeah."
"Ah, it's getting dark now…" Standing up, she dusted off her legs before reaching her hand out. "Here."
She reached for it, stood up, and for the rest of the walk, their hands stayed conjoined as it fought away the cold air.
"Can you send me that photo?"
