“I know what I want.” Her words were quiet. “I’m asking what you want.”
The question opened somewhere deep inside him.
What did he want? The answer was so large that it frightened him.
He wanted every lost year returned.
He wanted to kneel before her father and confess every failure.
He wanted to tell her that long ago he had loved her before either of them understood the word, and that death, prison and another lifetime had failed to teach him how to stop.
