Work Text:
An odd change that happened recently was movie nights. Neither of them could make it through a movie without overanalyzing the plot.
Yet, they never agreed on a movie to watch.
Horror movies were a bust. Both Light and L had seen worse on bodies. Same goes for crime thrillers. The killer was obvious to them within minutes.
Romances were rare for them. Light said it reminded him too much of Sayu's obsession with male celebrities. L never paid much attention to them.
Comedy movies seemed too much like mindless distractions. At least to Light. L enjoyed those a little more but it heavily relied on how good the plot was.
Action movies were a dead no for the both of them. It moved too fast and anyone watching needs to know every single detail from every single movie.
Sci-fi was Light's favorite. A perfect mixture of fiction and the hard truth. It needed to be true sci-fi though.
L's contract has guidelines to make sure Light and L are treated well. While super geniuses that could easier work for days, they are still human.
Every Sunday was the day they get off. Unless it is a very major emergency. That hasn't happened enough for them to stipulate new guidelines.
So Sunday nights became movie night. Light will cook a simple dish they can eat on the couch will cuddled up next to each other and watching a movie.
Whoever had a movie idea, that's what was turned on. Then small arguments would break out when they both wanted to watch something.
After three weeks of arguments, L proposed an idea.
"Light. What if instead of arguing, we play a game of tennis and the winner chooses the movie."
"Good idea. Just like our first game. First to six." Light nods.
Just a couple hours later, equipment was ordered. A net they could set up and take down easily, a handful of rackets, and plenty of balls.
That first Sunday afternoon, tennis was set up in the backyard. It was cloudy out but nothing they couldn't handle.
L was posted up in his usual while Light tried dressing light to account for any sweat or quick movements.
L won that match.
Light won the next two.
That became their odd routine.
Currently, it's Sunday morning. Light is making breakfast for the both of them. Pancakes with some fruit on the side. A few strips of bacon as well.
L was dozing on the couch. He had insisted on joining Light downstairs while he was cooking but he has fallen back asleep.
Light would spend his mornings cleaning whatever mess was made that week. L would walk up to the orphanage and tutor some of the ones that were struggling in classes.
Light knows he cares. Deep down under all the monotony of L, is someone who wants to help the world in every single way they can.
He places a plate of pancakes covered in chocolate and strawberries in L's lap. "Good morning. Come on, eat."
Light sits next to L, his own plate on his lap.
His hair is a mess.
"How about two matches today? We didn't go on a walk this week." Light mutters in L's ear as he fixes the bed head.
"That sounds doable. You're going to lose."
"Am not. I won last week."
"Yes, that is true. Yet, I still carried a four week streak of winning."
"That's not fair. You wore short sleeves, I got distracted."
"And who's fault is that?"
"Shut up."
Light shoves a bite of food into his mouth and chews it with some indignity. There's a small pout on his face.
L finishes his food in record time. Light takes the plates.
I've been domesticated like a stray cat. Maybe I'll play dirty today.
"I'll be back soon. It's a small list today." L closes the front door behind him. It's the only time Light gets any alone time.
The afternoon comes quickly. Now, Light and L are staring each other down. Their once weekly tennis match over movie night.
Some would say it's overdramatic, but it's them.
They've already played the first game. Light won that one. They are tied for points. 5 to 5.
L caught onto the fact that Light was playing a little dirty and started his own tactics. Both of them are drenched in sweat.
If I hadn't offered the second game, I would be able to choose.
Light shakes his head and that's when the tennis ball flies past his head. 6 to 5. They both won a game.
"A third game?"
"No. I'm much too tired." L walks back inside.
"Who is choosing the movie?"
"We will just have to agree."
That's impossible.
Light blinks in shock. He drops his own racket and follows L inside the house.
"We have to figure out a way to decide who chooses! Come on, L." Light tugs on L's arm. There's been a movie he's wanted to watch for ages that was finally available.
"You can pick. But, you must agree to let me pick next week." L pokes his finger into Light's chest. He looks up at Light through his eyelashes.
"Alright. Thank you." Light nods and sighs, his body finally relaxing.
"Go shower. You're gross." L pushes him up the stairs to their bathroom. "I'll shower after you."
"You better. I'm not cuddling you if you're sticky from sweat."
Light gets into the shower, hurrying along his process to let L hop in while it's still warm.
Light gets into pajamas even though it's only dinner time. He cooks two chicken breasts with a lemon pepper dry rub. He can hear the shower running upstairs.
Is this true peace?
L comes to eat just in time. Light pats the couch and hands him his plate. He finds the remote on the coffee table and gets to his choice of movie.
"What in the world is that?"
"The Cat From Outer Space. My choice for today." Light curls up against L with a smile on his face.
This is what he wants in life.
Yes, this is peace.
"I love you." Light says out of the blue.
"I love you too."
