I Shall Shenan Again

Summary:

Hen is giving Buck a tour of the station. There may be a clipboard involved.

Work Text:

"Ooh, a clipboard!" Buck said excitedly as they reached the supply closest. He plucked it off the nail it was hanging from and scanned down the attached spreadsheet.

"If you're on restock duty, you need to mark down everything you remove from the closet," explained Hen, who was doing his orientation. "If you noticed that we're below the threshold for something, you need to tell Bobby so we can order more. We can't risk running out."

"Got it," Buck said firmly. "Is there a clipboard for restocking?"

Hen looked askance at him, but finally nodded. "Yes there is."

"Awesome! I love a clipboard!" Buck declared cheerfully.

Hen gave him the stink eye. "No shenanigans with the clipboard. Those are important."

"I shall shenan and then I shall shenan again," Buck said without thinking about it.

Hen groaned. "Not that stupid meme," she sighed.

"Is your kid obsessed with it too?" Buck asked. He'd heard Hen talking about her son earlier, though he hadn't caught the name.

"You've got a kid?" Hen asked, more surprised than Buck thought was entirely warranted.

"Yeah, Chris. He's six," Buck said, pulling out his phone to show her his lock screen, which was a picture of the three of them at Disneyland. "He's the best. And I got his pretty decent dad in the deal too."

Hen laughed, but gamely traded him phones so he could see a picture of her kid and who he presumed was her wife. "That's Karen and Denny."

"Cute family," Buck said. "I love kids."

"Well we've got a few of them here at the 118," Hen said. "I'll introduce you to the other parents so you can commiserate."

"Deal," Buck agreed.

"How's the tour coming?" asked a voice from behind them as they were trading phones back. Buck turned and found the Captain standing there. Buck didn't have the best read on him yet, despite them having a conversation at the Academy before he'd been hired. That had mostly been focused on his qualifications and the expectations on the job, not anything more personal.

"Good," Hen said a little too quickly. "No shenanigans here, Cap."

"Maybe a small shenan or two?" the Cap said with a smile.

Buck grinned. "Maybe one or two."

"How was your day yesterday and today?" Buck asked when Eddie got home from the Academy. Because of the timing of it, Buck didn't get home until after Eddie had already left to take Chris to school, so he hadn't seen him that morning when he'd gotten home.

"Live fire exercise," Eddie explained, and Buck nodded, remembering that well enough. "The instructors said I did a good job. What about you?"

"I got to use two different clipboards!" Buck said excitedly.

"Ay dios," Eddie muttered.

"And he shenaned without us!" Chris piped up from where he was doing his homework.

"And I shall shenan again!" Buck declared unrepentantly as both of his boys broke into laughter. It was the sweetest sound he'd ever heard.
