Work Text:
It was a pretty decent evening. Eggchan had just woken up from a nap, now lying without a purpose and staring at the ceiling- or at least, it seemed like he did. It would be nice if he could, y'know, see at least a bit. Would've helped his poor imagination that tried really hard to help him pass time. Ever since he couldn't see, his life became a boring blur of learning how to be fully depended on hearing cues. Well, not all the time - we'll give credits to his best friend, Wemmbu, who acted as his personal entertainer from time to time!
But the demon couldn’t always stay by his side, obviously. He had life outside of their friendship and other people to spend time with. Which is why Wemmbu is currently not home, probably hanging out with some of their other friends. No one else knows that Egg is now disabled, and they’ve been trying to keep it that way. Because you can’t really trust all the people to keep their mouth shut. Somewhere between gossips and pleasantries that fact can slip out, and that will lead to Eggchan getting kidnapped again, or worse, killed.
The white-haired stood up, navigating himself to the kitchen. It was his favorite place ever since he was umpromptly banned from the library - that he, mind you, asked to build, because Wemmbu’s worried he’ll fall from the staircase. It’s a strange paranoia that haunts his friend, but he’s used to it.
Walking to the familiar shapes of the room he’s currently in, which includes a table and a couch, the guy sat down. There’s nothing much to do. There was no chill air in the room, so he assumed the window is closed. When he checked, it was. He opened it slightly, plopping back onto the couch.
Well.
All that’s left is waiting for Wemmbu to come back for them to have dinner and talk.
And as a fellow bookworm, Egg’s favorite activity ever since he lost his vision was listening to audiobooks on his communicator. He took it out from his pocket and unlocked. He was really grateful for Wemmbu that installed a voice assistant, otherwise it would’ve been pure torture.
Listening to all sorts and variants of books available, his interest was piqued by a certain one. It contained something with a fictional, unique religion, and he wanted to know what it was.
“Mt. Hikami is considered a Sacred Place. People from all of the Japan, all around the world, all of them are travelling just to see the beauty of this place: the famous bright sunset, the peak of the mountain that was rumored to be calling people over there, in the waters. People were always eager to learn about the unique religion taught there, which included a belief that our life cycle starts..”
The seraphim leaned in further onto the couch, setting himself comfortable. A cool breeze was washing over him from time to time, the reason being the window he opened not even 10 minutes ago. It was nice, he didn’t mind at all.
The story he was listening to was about two people that were dear to eachother, and their fate was, frankly speaking, doomed. Eggchan was listening attentively, falling asleep again despite being up for maybe an hour. It’s hard to stay awake when you’re comfortable, you feel me?
However, his peaceful state was interrupted by something jumping onto his lap. The white-haired stopped the audio and looked down, confused.
It’s not like he could see what’s in front of him…
Ahem!
The guy held up a hand, feeling warmth radiate from the smaller body. So, okay, it’s alive. That’s okay. Could’ve guessed with the fact it literally jumped in here.
It licked his palm.
Egg yelped, his head wings puffing out before calming down and resting against his hair. He retreated his hand.
“Dude, warn a guy,” he whisper-screamed, scolding the creature.
And it actually responded.
“Meow!”
Oh. So it’s a cat! The white-haired sighed with relief it wasn’t anything dangerous-
What if it was a baby tiger. Or a lion. Or-
Nah, probably not! Nothing to worry about. Just a ball of fur.
Actually. Do tigers even meow? If not, then what noise do they make? Do they, like, just growl lowly to set the danger lever high or…
He’ll ask Flame once he gets the chance. That guy was a tiger hybrid last time he’d seen him, and I don’t think there’s any way to change your species.
Okay, back to the problem at hand. There’s a cat. A living one, which means it needs water and food. Egg is… conflicted. The same cat had curled on his lap and started purring. Still, even if now that cat will sleep, there’s no guarantee Wemmbu will be back before it wakes up and starts whining for food. Especially if it’s a stray cat, they rarely get any food!
So, the seraphim had done the only logical thing. He had called Wemmbu.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
“The sidequest cannot be that important,” he mumbles when he hears that the call had ended automatically. Seriously, Wemmbu would answer him in the heat of a fight, but wouldn’t answer him when he needs him the most!
What can he even do now…
The cat seemed to have made itself comfortable. Eggchan thought of all other variants he had to call. Parrot is most likely to decline, since he’s always busy with some bullshit, Flame sounds like bad news now, since, y’know, he’s a cat too. Just a big one. Who knows how he will react…
MinuteTech. They haven’t been really talking lately, the reason being that they are mutually busy with their own things. Wemmbu was meaning to visit him at the End by the end of the week, and it’s only tuesday. Well… He’ll explain it to his best friend later. Right now he needs help. And maybe company that will assure him that it’s not saber-toothed tiger that will eat him next morning…
The call goes through.
“Yeah?” a familiar voice answered.
“Hey, Minute,” Egg doesn’t try to hide his relief. “It’s gonna be a weird request, but could you, like, go to our base? And buy some cat food on your way…”
“Uhh- yeah, I can. But why? If you guys got a cat, why can’t you take care of it?” the voilding asks, concerned.
“Uhm. I’ll explain once you’re here.”
“Okay..”
Damn. Minute also doesn’t know about Egg’s blindness. When Wemmbu told the white-haired that this will stay a secret, he didn’t think that they would hide it from this guy too. He’d been there for them for so long!
Whatever. All that’s left for now is waiting. Egg hates doing that without a distraction, which is why he had opened the audiobook again and started from where he had left off.
The cat shifted occasionally, and had already started meowing more often than before. It’s probably hungry. The seraphim had put a hand over the smaller body, stratching it absentmindedly.
The door had finally clicked, indicating a new guest. Egg doesn’t know if he expects it to be Wemmbu more than Minute, and he decides not to think about it.
“So, I’m waiting for an explanation,” Minute’s voice echoed through as he walked into the kitchen. Egg had stopped his audio and looked at the source of voice, or, tried to. He assumed the black-haired had stayed in the doorframe, probably also holding a pack of cat food.
“Uhh. So, basically,” Egg looks away, at the table before him, “I- I can’t see. Like, at all,” his head wings show his embarassment, moving to hide his face.
“I’m sorry, what? And- and you didn’t think to tell me?” Minute sounded more worried than hurt. Perhaphs it’s the best outcome.
“Well- Wemmbu had told me we’ll keep it a secret-”
The cat bit him.
“OW! What did I do?” Egg looks at his lap. An angry meow escapes cat’s mouth.
“Okay, we’ll discuss this later. That thing is angry,” the voidling delivers a verdict, getting closer, but staying at a certain distance. He’s probably at the kitchen counter. The white-haired retreated his hand, nodding.
“So, Wemmbu’s gone, and this cat appeared out of nowhere is what I’m getting,” the black-haired says.
“Yeah, something like that. I had tried calling him, but that guy wouldn’t asnwer me. He left me here, all alone, to die-”
The cat had reached for his hand and bit him again.
“Ow! Stop biting me?! What’s your problem?!” Egg makes an angry face the best he could. The cat meows back aggressively. It moved from his lap to sit beside him.
Minute laughs quietly, before setting down a plate with cat food on the floor. He went closer to his companion to pick up the angry creature. Then he sees it.
“Uh- Egg?”
“What?” the white-haired looks up at the standing figure.
“The cat. It’s… Okay, first of all, it’s male, and he’s shameless,” that implied that the cat was licking itself. Well… It’s normal for them, I guess. “Secondly, it’s purple.“
“Wh- It’s WHAT?”
“I have the same question,” Minute had reached a hand to scratch the back of this furball’s head, but received a hiss and an angry scowl. “Oh, and he’s Mr. Untouchable, of course. Reminds me of someone.” he says,
The seraphim looks down at the source of hissing with even more confusion than before.
“No, but- But Wemmbu’s a demon?”
“I’m not saying he’s not?”
“You’re impying that this cat is him.”
“You- Eggchan. You’re aware that you can be a hybrid of two species at the same time?”
“The definition of hybrid is that you’re only partly belong to the species. Not- You don’t turn into it fully per your wish.”
“I- yeah, I guess. Still, we’re both not hybrids, but our own species, so we can’t be sure.”
“Dude, have you seen my library? I know what I’m talking ‘bout!” Egg retorts.
“And you’re blind,” Minute answers, smiling.
“I- Bro. You’re all the same!” Egg whines, remembering how his best friend was practically bullying him.
“Okay, I’m sorry, dude,” the voidling chuckles.
The cat had been staring daggers at Minute for at least a minute now. It did not look cute. You know, when you imagine Wemmbu as a cat, you expect something elegant, confident, and beautiful, with how the purple-haired is obsessed on looking “presentable”. This creature? Exactly. It’s a creature.
It has purple fur, a little darker than the normal color, just like the hair of a person it reminds them of. Which was ridiculously funny to even think about it. Is that even possible? Or that little creature just jumped into a bucket of paint? No, the color looks too natural. The paint would’ve dried and his fur would’ve looked damp, but instead, it looks soft.
“He’s ugly too,” Minute comments, standing up. The cat, as if understanding what he had said, meowed loudly. Eggchan hummed in acknowledgement.
“I wouldn’t say that about Wemmbu,” the seraphim replies.
“Woah! Be careful, he might hear you and his ego would grow even bigger.”
The white-haired giggles. His unfocused gaze shifts to the opened window, feeling
“Wemmbu should be back soon.”
“You’re that oblivious to everything I’ve said earlier?” the voidling filled a second bowl he bought with water.
“Uhm.. Well, you can say whatever and I wouldn’t really be able to know if you’re lying.”
“Egg, he hissed at me when I called him ugly.”
“He meowed because he’s hungry,” the seraphim corrected.
“Bro. Okay, fine! You can wait for Wemmbu all you want, I’ll go back to the End,” Minute clasps his hands together.
“Wait wha- no! Don’t leave a cat with me?!”
“What, you think you won’t handle it?”
“Minute, I can’t even see it,” the white-haired huffs.
“Oh, right,” the voidling smiles. “I’m joking, chill out.”
“Phew.. almost gave me a heart attack for no reason.”
The black-haired laughs, taking the cat from the couch despite its protests, and lets it eat.
“You wanna eat something?”
“Would be nice.”
“Hmm.. what do we think about pancakes?”
“Bro, please, no,” the guy recalls a pancake recipe that almost was used by Wemmbu not too long ago. After that he’s horrified of the word alone, not only the food! Could you imagine birch logs in pancakes? No? Exactly.
“Why?”
“Just- no. I don’t want pancakes today.”
“Picky,” Minute clicks his tongue. Egg doesn’t reply to that.
So, they ate spaghetti. Not that bad, considering Minute was really tired to make something decent. You know, it’s not easy to travel from End to where Egg and Wemmbu are stationed.
After that, the voidling had tucked the, now full, cat on Wemmbu’s bed. Egg sat on his own.
“You’re leaving?” Egg asks, worried.
“I’ll sleep on the couch. I will not leave you with a cat, don’t worry,” the other reassures. “We don’t want dead animals in your house.”
Eggchan giggles, before lying down and closing his eyes. He felt the cat jump to him and curl against his side, and with that, he fell asleep.
The morning, however, wasn’t as peaceful. Matter of fact, Wemmbu woke up first, and the first thing he sees is that he cuddles with his best friend! The demon jolts up and blinks multiple times, confusion replaced with realization.
Yesterday, he’d been walking from his sparring session with Flame, when some chungus splashed him with some potion. It was sweet, too sweet for the purple-haired’s liking. He feels his mind fogging slowly, and the last thought he registered was “oh, I’m dead, damn”.
He did not recall coming back home, nor-
He recalls coming back home. In a small body.
MinuteTech in the kitchen. He remembers getting called ugly by him.
What the f-
“Huh?” the white-haired woke up. His head wings flutter away the remainings of sleep.
“Bro,” Wemmbu calls out.
“O- Wemmbu! You’re back,” the seraphim smiles lazily. “Have you seen the cat? Yesterday it jumped in-”
“Bro, I think I was the cat.” the demon interrupts.
“Yo, what are you talking about?”
“Some random splashed me with potion yesterday, I fell unconscious, and when I semi-regained my consciousness, I was in our kitchen, in a smaller body, and I- I fucking meowed?!”
“Uhm- uhh. That’s concerning.”
“Oh, good morning, guys,” Minute walks in, smiling.
“Hey! You called me ugly yesterday!”
“Ah, so you do remember what happened yesterday!” the voidling cheers.
“I hate you,” the demon turns away, huffing.
“Actually, I fed you. You need to thank me for not letting you starve to death.”
“No.”
“Aw, man. You hear this, Egg? I helped him survive and he doesn’t even utter a thank you!” Minute has audacity to sound hurt. The white-haired giggles.
“Thank you, Minute, for saving The Almighty Wemmbu that was reduced to a ball of fur,” Eggchan replies, sitting up.
“Bro.” Wemmbu rolls his eyes.
“So, Wemmbu, wanna explain to me why you hid Egg’s blindness from me?” Minute changes the topic, his voice drops.
The demon turns to face the voidling. He gulps.
“Uhh-”
