“I don’t.” Shorter waits for Eiji to say more. It comes, like trickling water from a tap; from Eiji, things always spill out. “But I used to like taking pictures of interesting things. Sordid things, sometimes; photojournalism is like that. But also, I liked taking pictures of beautiful things.” Eiji readjusts himself, so close his open leg is almost leaning into Shorter’s, then sighs. “I’m trying to look at them. To remember what it was like to look at beautiful things.”

He needs to leave right now and meet Yut Lung, who’s texting him, needy. Shorter is a bad texter, always has been; he always misspells things even with autocorrect on, leaves people on read for hours at a time, then sends, like, four hundred funny memes from Instagram instead of responding to people’s serious questions. But Yut Lung, withholding affection until Shorter replies in full, correctly-spelled (or close enough) paragraphs, demands more of him. For the first time, Shorter feels like fixing his life. Like being more, even if it’s just a little bit.
