“It’s wonderful, isn’t it?” Rose continues. “How they can change? Grow?”
“And they die so fast,” interjects Pearl, perhaps uncharitably.
“Hm. Come closer.”
Oh. Rose always needs her to fall asleep.
Pearl curls up next to Rose, and they cover themselves with a felt blanket Rose had made herself, clumsily, laughing at her own clumsiness, after seeing a woman do it from unspooling threads. Pearl had watched her do it, held an end of it when done for her, dutifully, and marveled wide-eyed at all the things Rose was bad at in this newfangled world. So now they cuddle, close, and Pearl thinks: maybe tonight their cuddling will turn into something else, or maybe it won’t. Pearl hopes it does.
