Work Header

its too darn hot

Summary:

As it turns out, Peter is spending his Saturday third wheeling his aunt and his mentors date. (He swears he did NOT know it was a date when he asked to join them!) But of course not even a picnic at the beach can go without tragedy...

Notes:

gonna buy a shirt that says 'Sunscreen Skeptic' on the front and 'I ❤️ Heat Exhaustion' on the back. A black shirt, obviously, for peak heat retention.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It's so fucking hot.

Peter might actually be dying. Well, he isn't, but he might as well be.

Theyre at the beach. Him, May, and Tony. He realized about 40 minutes ago that this was probably supposed to be a date. Picnic at the beach, very romantic when your nephew isn't tagging along. But, hey, it's too late now.

They've been walking around the shore for a while now and, in case he hasn't made it clear, it is so fucking hot. It's gotta be like a hundred degrees or something. Peter doesn't know how Tony and May both seem to be perfectly fine.

His head's starting to feel light, that's probably not a good sign.

Oh, okay, no, he's dizzy. That's definitely not a good sign. Peter reaches out to grab May's arm, practically hugging it. He doesn't want to fall. They stop walking, and Peter can see Tony talking to him through the blackness spotting his vision, but he can barely hear it. One of his ears is completely muffled, the other one's ringing like crazy.

When Peter doesn't respond, he turns to face May. Peter only catches pieces of the conversations. "Heat," and "look," and then May says something about sweating, probably pointing out that Peter isn't. Right, she doesn't know he kinda stopped doing that a couple months ago… he probably should've told he..

Peter doesn't know what Tony says back, but they're walking again, slower now. It's not long before they're sitting Peter down on a bench. Then Tony's walking away. Peter doesn't want him to go…

There's a hand running through his hair now. May's. Right, she didn't leave him. His ears are still ringing, but it's fading out now, though Peter still can't hear out of the right one.

May says something to him, Peter only catches parts of it. "He's… go… water.." Water. That's… yeah. Water's good. Peter should.. should probably drink some water.

His throat is dry, actually. Really dry. He hadn't noticed that before. Peter swallows, leaning further into May.

Next thing he knows, Tony's kneeling in front of him. "Hey..ou...ith me?" With me? Yeah… yeah, Peter's with 'im.

"Yeah…" His own voice even sounds faint to him.

"..kay.." Tony holds up a bottle of water, then he's unscrewing the cap, holding it out to Peter. Peter takes it with a shaking hand, downing half of it before it's pushed away from his mouth. May says something about… something fast. Drinking too fast? Maybe. Yeah. If he's dehydrated he should be drinking slow… huh..

Peter nods. The movement immediately sends another wave of dizzyness up to his head. The world muffles again, Peter can't hear anything for a moment, not even his own heartbeat. The blackness comes back in too, completely overtaking his vision before it fades back out. Fuck, that's really not good.

Tony's talking again. And then he's standing, and pulling Peter to stand with him. Peter doesn't wanna walk again. "No.." he whines, leaning into Tony.

"…ome on….nside…." No. No, Peter just wants to sit down. God, his fucking head hurts. May's at his other side now, hand on his back. They're talking again, Peter really wishes he could hear the fucking conversation. It's most likely about him, after all. He deserves to hear it. Stupid fucking heat exhaustion. Heat stroke? Peter doesn't know the difference. Or, well, he knows the difference. One is worse than the other, right? He just doesn't know which one. He probably should. That's important knowledge.

Despite his complaints, Peter doesn't actually stop them when they start to lead him away from the bench. He keeps his eyes on his own feet as they walk, mostly because all the people and sunlight is worsening his headache.

Eventually they walk through a door, and— oh, Peter missed air conditioning. He's being sat down again, at a table this time. Peter leans forward, resting his forehead against the cool metal table. Fuck, that feels good.

It's a pizza place, Peter smells it. He could go for a pizza right now. Double cheese, pepperoni, maybe mushrooms. He probably shouldn't be so hungry considering they just ate…

Peter feels May's hand around his wrist. Feeling his pulse, maybe? Right, yeah, it's probably racing. Peter can't even feel it, which, now that he's thinking about it is probably not a good thing.

Sound is coming back now. Peter sits up enough to drink his water, finishing the bottle. Tony's standing at the counter, he smiles when he notices Peter looking at him, raising the hand not holding his reciept in a little wave. Peter waves back with his now empty bottle before dropping his head against the table again.

May's hands are running through his hair again, playing with his curls. It's so nice, Peter thinks, smiling to himself. May leans down to kiss his head, murmuring, "feeling better?"

He is. "Yeah," he whispers back, turning his head to look at her. "Sorry.. for ruinin' your date.."

"Oh, baby, don't worry about that," she ruffles his hair, making Peter chuckle. "I just want you okay. Tony's getting you some lemonade, alright?" Peter nods, shutting his eyes. Lemonade sounds good. Peter thinks anything would sound good right now, honestly.

He's really glad she's not upset. Peter doesn't know what he'd do if she was.

"Really?" Peter looks up to see Tony carrying over a box of pizza, as well as three drinks.

"What? It's cheaper than just getting a couple slices." Tony places the box down first, then the drinks. "I'm being smart about my money."

Peter's pretty sure that's not what May was 'really'-ing. He smiles as she gives Tony a look. The look. The 'don't play dumb, you little shit' look. Peter's been on the receiving end of that look more times than he could count.

Tony, of course, just grins right back before turning to face Peter. "How're you kid? Better?"

Peter nods, grabbing the lemonade and taking a couple sips. "I think so."

"Good. That's good. You should've said something as soon as you started feeling off."

Yeah, he's realizing that now. Peter just nods again. He knows if he says something, they're gonna start lecturing him. The last thing he needs right now is them to team up scolding him. They are ruthless together. Peter would probably think it's cute how in sync they get if it weren't always directed toward him.

They're talking again. Peter missed ignoring people on purpose. Way better than not being able to hear them. He leans his head on May's shoulder as Tony hands him a slice of pizza.

This is nice. Hypothermia. Hyperthermia? It's hyperthermia. Why do they have to sound so similar? Anyways, yeah, no, not that part. But this is nice.
