ONE - The scientist:
Subject 007 is a peculiar girl. Because of her age, it is difficult for her to sit still.
On the other side of the glass, she sits kicking her feet in a tall, black chair that is too big for her. She picks at a line attached to her, but she has learned she’s not allowed to remove anything connected to the monitors. She bites her lip, staring intently at the one-way window like she can see through it.
Subject 006 is much quieter. More still.
“The next image, please.”
The slide on the monitor flicks to a new one. Blue star, yellow square; now, red heart.
“Please focus on the image,” you correct when Subject 006 looks toward the glass instead. “She should be able to see it from your mind.”
Subject 007’s eyes scrunch up. Your colleagues stand with you; Hans is taking notes, fingers drumming against the keyboard as he keeps an eye on the readings, and Reina reads instructions into the other room.
“Seems she’s receiving a lot of input.”
“It’s okay,” Subject 006 murmurs soothingly. “Slowly, Anya.”
Subject 007 concentrates and suddenly declares, “Love.”
TWO - Subject 006:
You walk barefoot in the grass.
It feels nice. Real. A part of the outside world, however small. Little stalks of grass prickle underneath your feet. The smell of flowers is sweet and heady. A little wind stirs up your hair and the thin hospital gown.
Her hand is in yours. Anya doesn’t let go, clutching on tight even as she tries racing ahead to look at everything. From twisting ribbons of grass, to boring patches of dirt, everything is beautiful and new to her.
You want to take her away. You want to be on a hill in the countryside, with a basket and a picnic blanket. Fresh apples, honeyed bread. You want to take her to see the stars and teach her all the constellations until she falls asleep.
Anya is so much bigger now. So different from the baby you held close once, crying while you sang lullabies. She walks and speaks. Makes trouble and sings and knows things without being told.
She doesn’t need to be told.
“Mama.”
She tugs at your hand.
You don’t say anything out loud. Anya’s powers are still unstable, developing as she grows and fluctuating by the day. But—
If she can hear you thinking—
Please hold onto this:
You focus and form the picture in your own mind.
You will take her away from here. Walk in soft grass outside. Explore a thousand places. You will buy her a new dress to play in. A cozy, warm home. No more scientists or doctors or experiments or politics. Anya will be a child, and free.
