Work Text:

sylised picture of a white blonde kitten with bright blue eyes on a metallic pink and gold background. In metallic gold letters it reads instincts

instincts

"You're so dumb but you're so cute."

The thing is, Spike would love to object to the 'dumb' part, but on the one hand, he is currently quite literally a dumb animal, and even his most emphatic meowing has yet to convince Buffy of his smarts. On the other hand, and possibly even worse, he has his very own actual person mind in here, and yet when Buffy makes the little red dot dance, his stupid small fluffy creature instincts kick in and he tries to catch the bloody thing.

Really, it's a wonder more cats don't murder their owners.

(It's embarrassing in the extreme that Buffy says shit like that and he purrs. What kind of ninny gets all happy and affectionate from being insulted? A kitten, apparently. Stupid bloody pillock.

Must be instincts again. It's not Spike's fault!)

Some punter at her work left the laser pointer behind on a table. Anyone who uses a laser pointer for their work, Buffy said, should be able to tip better. Spike's tiny kitten heart squeezed worryingly in his chest when he realised she'd nicked it for him; he couldn't be more delighted if she'd bought the thing. Buffy Summers, Slayer, bastion of goodness and righteousness, actually stole something from a customer because she thought it would entertain him. Made him need to take a moment.

(She's still counting pennies, and he's still eating as little as he can get away with. She's started to worry that he's not growing. It's a problem.)

She makes the dot jump onto the chair, the table, back down to the floor, then onto the bed, and Spike follows it, jumping and twisting and practically falling over his own feet trying to keep up. Buffy laughs, and it's not that he's doing this to entertain her, but it's a bonus. She has a nice laugh, okay? It's fine. He can stop any time he likes.

(He could if he really wanted to. Right? Right.)

He leaps and chases and then there's one last pounce, and it disappears. Buffy giggles softly and strokes his head, and that's when he realises she led him a merry chase right into her lap.

He should probably be pissed off, especially when she tells him once again that he's a pretty boy with no brain cells and she loves how very stupid he is.

It has to be instincts. It's the only conclusion. 'Cause he should be furious, but he purrs instead.
