“Rem, tell me,” Misa says sweetly, brushing her hair.
Rem will tell Misa whatever she wants. Shinigami don’t really sleep, but sometimes waiting around gets really boring, and Rem dozes off. But no matter what, no matter where she is, if Misa calls, Rem will come running.
“How does your body work?”
Rem wasn’t quite expecting that question from Misa.
“It’s a body,” Rem says. “Like yours.”
Misa laughs. “I really doubt that, Rem! Since you can pass through walls and follow me, no matter where I go!”
Whenever Misa says her name like that, all tender and sweetlike, Rem can hardly hold herself back. She knows she’s partially incorporeal, not quite real the way the others are, but—could she? Could she allow Misa to touch her? Would she become more real, more physical, through that, more like a person herself and a little less godlike? And isn’t this exactly what she wanted?
“Why don’t you come closer,” Rem says, and her voice, deep as always, catches at the back of her throat.
