Work Text:

Ever since Shubble was turned her reflection became a stranger. She knew she wasn't supposed to have a reflection altogether, so the stranger in full armor living a different life was utterly confusing.

Shubble could sit in front of the mirror for hours and watch as the stranger talked to people she couldn't hear and couldn't see, all she could see was the young woman in beautiful armor walking around and climbing as the room reflected, when the stranger held something, she could see it.

Everything they touched came into view, covering the reflection of the room and disappearing the moment they lost contact with it. Shubble watched as the stranger introduced themselves, curled up in her blanket on the floor in front of the full body mirror.

They apparently had the same name, though they had a completely different life. Their life was all decided for them, with friends and family and even a partner who supposedly loved them, even after death they found happiness. While Shubble had none of that growing up.

She crawled up to the mirror, wrapping the blanket around it as well, her shoulder pressed against it, she watched Shelby fight their way to the surface. It's only been a small while since Shubble died, and she still has conflicted feelings about it.

“Hi!” Shelby called out, as if unsure of where the other person was coming from. Shubble pulled her legs closer to her chest, she couldn't see who Shelby was talking to, but she assumed they were quite quiet.

“I can hear you breathing.” Shelby turned their head around, searching for the person with their hands. however they couldn't seem to find them. “That's unfortunate…” Shubble mumbled and tugged the blanket in an attempt to cover her shoulders.

“Whats unfortunate?” Shelby asked, pulling their arms back closer towards their body, their search for the other person cut short. Shubble's eyes widened at the reaction to her words. “I heard you, don't ignore me!” Shubble pulls away from the mirror in a hurry, the mirror wobbles.

Her legs get tangled in the blanket, she uses her hands to pull her body away as she frantically kicks the blanket off with her legs, the mirror starts leaning forward about to fall on her legs, Shubble squeaks in surprise as the mirror falls and shatters just short of her legs.

“Echo person?” is the last thing she hears before the mirror shatters completely. she doesn't stay around for long, instead running out of her cabin to find Scott.

The first thing Shelby hears after being chosen as Tyche’s champion is a plea, she can hear more people around her yet none of them seem to hear the begging echoing from below. it echoes around as if she's in a big closed space, probably a cave.

“Wait! no, i thought we could be friends though, i thought you guys maybe could be good. We could've been friends, you were the bats! you were the bats, weren't you?!”

She takes a step closer, her hands searching for the poor person, she’s not a fighter but no one else is even trying to help, she has to help the poor person, who seems to be absolutely terrified.

A loud splash echoes through the place, the plea's gone silent, now all Shelby can hear is the sound of flowing water and small conversations, she takes another step towards the sound, careful to not fall into the water she assumes is right in front of her.

“I'd be careful, there's an edge there.” someone pulls her away, she struggles momentarily before letting them lead her away, the person is most likely already dead by now, if the splash was anything to go by.

“It was you?”

Shelby flinches, she thought the person was dead, but the three words they just let out told Shelby that they were very clearly alive. The person leading her pulls her into somewhere hot and humid, which really sucks because she has no clue where she is.

Then the person leading her finally apologies and introduces himself, shelby does the same, although the person begging is still at the front of her mind the people around her quickly push it to the back.

Something small that Drift noticed about her new friend was how her reflection in the water looked different, wearing a green sweater and short skirt, though the bright red hair stayed. She couldn't ask Shelby about it due to Shelby being blind, she couldn't see her reflection.

She and Shelby are currently just relaxing, Drift describing the view to Shelby as the sun sets. The weird reflection seems to enter a house and grab a blanket before sinking to the floor and crying. Drift searches for any sort of a reaction from Shelby, which she finds none of.

The reflection finally finishes crying after a while. as they raise their head their eyes lock onto something, though when Drift looks up she finds nothing. Shelby grabs her hand and asks her what she's wearing, which Drift answers of course.

The reflection moves closer, and leans against the water, almost as if it's solid. “Hi!” Shelby calls out, startling Drift. Did she hear someone Drift can't see?

“I can hear you breathing.” Shelby turned her head around, searching for the person with her hands. Drift mourns the loss of the warmth in her hand but is fascinated by whatever was going on. The reflection tugged their blanket tighter around their shoulders, their eyes glued to Shelby.

“Whats unfortunate?” Shelby asked, pulling her arms back closer towards her body, something in her mind clicking. the reflections eyes widened. “I heard you, don't ignore me!” Shelby calls out confusion laced with curiosity.

Drift watches the reflection as they seem to scramble away from them before the view of them disappears and changes to a different direction, as if whatever connected them to Shelby just broke and now they can see them from a different thing.

“Echo person?” Shelby calls out, worry in her voice, Drift grabs her hand, doing her best to calm her down, Drift isn't sure what just transpired, she's no detective however she will figure it out.

Shubble doesn't need to sleep anymore, but the bed is comfortable, her mind is the opposite, plagued by Avids last words. She wishes she had someone to talk to about it, but Scott is emotionally unavailable currently and Drift is somewhere else.

She wonders what happened to the warrior, she hasn't seen them in quite a while, there weren't any reflective services in the castle she could sit in front without drawing too much attention. The warrior is a friend of hers, despite the distance.

She closes her eyes and throws the soft blanket above her head, nestling into the soft bedding.

When she opens her eyes again she's somewhere unfamiliar and dark, it's all black except for the figure of the warrior. holding a scale in each hand, one limp at her side while the other is held close to her chest.

Shubble steps towards them, their face is void of emotion, completely blank. As Shubble reaches them they reach their hand forward, the scale they kept close to their chest now laying in their palm.

“Your fate.” Shubble takes it hesitantly. She puts it on as if it's a necklace, the weight of the scale tilts her head forward, causing her to fall to her knees and attempt to catch herself with her hands, her claws dig into the black matter.

It's still too heavy, the momentum carries on and sends her head straight into the void, her head going through the floor. “This is your fate.” She wakes up breathless.

*

She lives, despite how many losses there are, she isn't one of them. Her head feels heavy, as if carrying all the deaths. She doesn't feel sorry for surviving but she does feel sorry for the lives cut short.

Meanwhile Shelby carries the other scale around, knowing that it's supposedly heavier than Shubbles. Although the memory of Shubble falling from the weight of hers never leaves her.

The weight of the scales is relative to the other part of it.

To Shubble it was too great of a loss.

To Shelby it was so many more lives.

Each has their own fate.
