5 times Matt hid his blindness and 1 time he couldn’t

Summary:

Matt really didn't want the Avengers to find out about his disability, I mean he tried really hard to make it seem like he could see. There are 5 times that Matt just gets away with 'seeing' but all his effort goes to waste after one mission.

Notes:

I have all chapters planned out so I should get all of them at soonish, I really wanted this chapter to be at least 1000 words but it's whatever. I'm still updating The dualities of the man that is Matt Murdock, but I thought of this idea while i was on the toilet and i just haddd to write it.

Chapter 1: Bombs are hard, okay?

Chapter Text

It had been a quiet night in the Kitchen up until the Avengers decided to bring their trouble.

Matt found himself fighting a group of criminals who believed that Hell’s Kitchen would be better if they blew it up to hell. Apparently they had planted three bombs in warehouses, with enough C4 to completely flatten everything.

They had split up - Matt and Barton in one warehouse, Romanov and Rogers in another and Stark and Peter in the third one.

The good thing about being paired with Barton was that even though he was a trained spy, he wouldn’t try and delve into Matt’s non-vigilante life, unlike the Widow.

On the other hand, working with Barton meant that sometimes his hearing aids got knocked out, Matt tried his best to learn sign language but visual languages and being blind doesn't mix. And it was just Matt’s luck that a thug managed to get a good hit on Barton, eliminating the buzz from his hearing aid.

Matt could feel the air around Barton bending as he signed something towards him, Matt just turned his back and pretended not to notice. He felt bad about that but he was too tired to attempt to guess what he was saying.

Landing a hard punch to a man’s ribcage, causing him to hunch in, Matt took him out with a quick kick to the head. That was all the men in the warehouses swiftly eliminated.

Now to find this stupid bomb.

A soft ticking sound made Matt snap towards a loose floorboard. He walked over and carefully wiggled it out of place, revealing the bomb that they were looking for.

Pressing down on his comm, Matt hoped that this bomb would be easy to diffuse, “I found the bomb.”

The crackle of a voice, which Matt would recognise as Stark’s, soon spoke in his ear. “Well done, Horns. Yours is the last one. It’s quite simple to diffuse, well, if your a genius like me-”

“Just tell me what to do, Stark.”

“God, someone’s impatient today.” Matt audibly growled into the mic, the comm was overly loud in his ear and Stark’s voice was really grating to him. “All you need to do is cut the red wire.”

Great. Just Great, that’s all Matt needed to hear.

Scowling at the bomb, Matt tried to focus on the wires, to see if there was any way he could distinguish from the colours. A tap on his shoulder, Matt turned to look at Barton.

“What did he say?”

“Um he said to cut the red wire.” Matt winced at his volume, he tried to speak slower so Barton could read his lips.

“Cut the red wire?” Matt nodded in reply, secretly relieved that Barton had understood him, at least he didn’t have to worry about looking stupid trying to feel his way to the red wire.

“DD they’re all red.”

What.

Who makes all the fucking wires red!

“Stark we have a problem.”

The reply came a few seconds after, “what’s up? Was cutting a wire too hard for you guys?” The frustration was clear in Stark’s voice.

“Yeah that’s the problem, they’re all red.” Matt tried hard to keep the annoyance from his voice, clearly failing.

“I could swing over quickly, Mr Stark?” The young voice of spider-man quipped helpfully, Matt must remember to buy him some food next time they meet.

Letting out a sigh, Stark replied, “Yeah good idea, no chance those two idiots would have enough brains to diffuse a bomb. Horns, how long does the timer have?”

Matt’s heart started speeding up, he had no way to tell, he looked around for Barton but he must’ve left to go fix his hearing aids.

“...I don’t know.”

“What do you mean you don’t know? It’s clearly written on the top of them!” Matt took the comm out to try and get away from Stark’s shouting. It wasn’t his fault he couldn’t bloody see the timer.
The soft sound of webbing started to gradually get louder. Looking up Matt ‘saw’ Peter crawl into the warehouse, looking like a saint.

“Hey DD!” He greeted as he landed next to Matt.

“I told you not to call me that Spider-boy.”

“Hey, I am not that young.” Peter pouted, crossing his arms.

“So are you going to diffuse the bomb, or?”

“Shit! Yes, give me a second.” Peter then crouched down and started tinkering with the bomb. Matt couldn’t tell what he was doing but it sounded like whatever he was doing was working.

He reached up to his comm, “all done, Mr Stark!”

Matt heard the now quieter voice of Stark reply, as he had taken his own comm out, “I told you call me Tony, but well done kid. Tell horns to meet back at the tower for a debrief.”

Matt let out an audible sigh. “Thanks Peter.” He said softly.

“It’s okay DD, want a lift back to the tower?”

“Nah it’s okay, I’ll make my way there gradually.”

“Okay, see you.” And then the kid was off swinging his way out of the warehouse.

I barely got through that without revealing myself, I need to be more careful.

Soon enough, Matt would eat his words.
