Summary
Michael Robinavitch, Duke of Pittsford, has buried a wife, taken in two wards, sent his only son to Scotland, and declined every lady in London for eight Seasons. He does not read the gossip sheets. He does not examine his feelings. He does not consider Miss Serena Démarius anything more than his matchmaker, though she is the only person in London whose company he prefers to anyone's, his own included.
The ton assumes he is in want of a duchess. His Grace is quite certain he wants nothing but peace.
But when Miss Démarius returns to Town in want of a husband and a way out, His Grace begins to suspect he has been rather mistaken about what he wants, and better yet what he needs.
She believes he sees only a friend in need of rescue. He would rather be shot than tell her otherwise.
