"Don't know isn't the same as dead."

Summary:

Jay shifted at his feet, wincing as he tried to pull himself up to stand.

"Whoa—whoa Jay, what the hell are you doing?" Cole grabbed him by the arms, setting him back down as his face paled, and he almost collapsed.

"We—we have," Jay shook violently, "We have to keep moving."

"No—you have to rest. There's no point in walking more, we don't even know where we're going!" Cole threw his hands up in exasperation, before kneeling down at Jay's side, "Here, let me see—"

Or, Jay and Cole are thrown from the bounty in a crash, what about everyone else?

Day 9: Infection | lab rat | quarantine | "What if we're the only ones? What if there's no survivors?"

Work Text:

Cole lay Jay gently back against the tree. He stood, wiping the sweat off his brow, glancing around the endless jungle. It all looked the same. Miles and miles of endless green – even when he'd scaled one of the trees, he'd found no sign of the Bounty.

He pulled aside the top half of Jay's Gi, not that there was much to move; the shredded garment destroyed in the crash they had been thrown from. He unwrapped the strips of cloth wrapped around the wound on his shoulder where something had clipped him good during their fall.

Cole himself was relatively uninjured, just scrapes and bruises, but Jay. He grimaced as he laid eyes on the gash, jagged edges surrounded by angry red skin, the center yellowing slightly. Jay tipped his head back against the tree, shaking more as Cole examined his wound.

Gingerly covering the wound, Cole racked his brains to try and remember Zane's first aid training. It was definitely infected, but out here, in the middle of the jungle, there wasn't much he could do. He was pretty sure Jay had a fever if the constant shivering was anything to go off – Cole wished he could be cold in this sweltering jungle.

Jay shifted uncomfortable next to him, hands fidgeting in his lap.

"Cole?"

"Hmm?" He looked up and met Jay's electric blue eyes.

"What-what if we're the only ones? What if there's no other survivors?"

"No—Jay, don't go there," He shook his head, brushing Jay's limp curls out of his face, "We don't know, okay? We don't know."

Jay looked down, flushed face falling. Cole cupped his chin, pulling his gaze back to meet his, "But don't know isn't the same as dead. Okay? Don't know isn't the same as dead."

He sighed heavily, ruffled Jay's hair, before standing. Cole took Jay's uninjured arm, and hauled him to his feet, slinging his arm over his shoulders. They began to walk through the thick jungle again.

"Let's go find them. We'll find them."
