“You planted tomatoes.”

“Not yellow cherries. Not in the squash section.” Patrick sits back and looks up. His husband is striking—dark hair, bright eyes, framed by a cloud. “But it happens. A seed is dropped by a bird or blown on the wind and unexpectedly falls on favorable soil.”

David smiles and extends a hand. Patrick accepts it automatically. Once standing, he bends to retrieve the colander of vegetables. They will have salad for dinner, its ingredients all homegrown.

“I’m happy,” David says.

Patrick thinks again about the improbability of landing here, both settling in this place accidentally. “Me too.”
