Smoke rises above the flickering flames and the logs crackle gently, an occasional spark flying upwards into the dark. Crickets chirp softly in the undergrowth. Stars twinkle above them. It’s a perfect night.
Once, Patrick couldn’t have imagined building a life with a partner who wouldn’t share his love for this particular kind of quiet, reflective evening. But somehow, the differences between his and David’s interests fade into insignificance next to what they share.
And anyway, that’s what friends are for.

“Wow, are you sure you don't wanna go right ahead and get a milkshake instead?” the barista in the boring blue button-down smirks.
“Excuse you,” David bristles, “There is nothing wrong with my coffee order: it is a perfectly balanced, tried and tested pick-me-up.”
“Sure, sure, of course. Name for the cup?” The guy still looks kinda smug.
David bites his tongue, because snippy customer service is one of life's great trials, but life without caffeine is worse. He's learnt this to his detriment over the years.

The magnolias are not flowering.
David doesn't look up to observe the bare tops of the trees as he passes the palace walls.
It's April; they should be in full bloom, but David knows they are not. He doesn’t need to check. They weren't flowering yesterday, and they weren't flowering last week, nor last month in the warm early spring weather. Just like they didn't flower last year, or the two years before that.

“Your Royal Highness.” Alex bows at the neck, not far enough to hide the dimple that pops out when he grins. His tongue rolls whiskey-warm around his accent; there’s more than a hint of the American South in it, and Henry has the distinct impression Alex is actively working to smooth it out. Then he looks up, his smile widening into something altogether more devastating, and god, Henry isn’t sure he can deal with this right now—
“I’ve really been looking forward to meeting you.”
And that is, officially, more than Henry can cope with. He opens his mouth, fully intent on begging Shaan to get him out of here, now, except… that’s not what comes out.
Or, Henry has an unfortunately physical reaction the first time he meets Alex... and it's not the one you're thinking of.
