Chapter Text

Darth Sidious had always believed himself a connoisseur of moments.
He understood timing the way lesser beings understood breath. He knew precisely when to press, when to lure, when to terrify, when to reward. Entire civilizations had fallen because he had chosen the correct moment to whisper.
This—
this—was supposed to be one of those moments.
Luke Skywalker stood before him, unarmed, flanked by relics of a dead Order. The boy was powerful, yes, but power without direction always bent toward those who understood how to shape it.
Sidious had shaped far greater things than this farmborn upstart.
And yet.
The boy was still smiling.
Not defiant.
Not nervous.
Amused.
Sidious felt irritation coil through him, a thin, unpleasant sensation that rarely survived long enough to be acknowledged. He crushed it instantly, replacing it with silk-smooth patience.
“Choose,” the Emperor said again, voice echoing softly through the throne room. “Serve me… or die with them.”
He watched Luke carefully, letting the dark side flare just enough to remind everyone present who ruled this galaxy.
Luke nodded, as if finally accepting the gravity of the situation.
“Yes,” Luke said. “Okay. I think I’m ready.”
Sidious leaned forward, predatory satisfaction blooming.
At last.
Luke raised a finger.
“One more thing.”
The Emperor’s eye twitched.
“Speak,” Sidious said, every syllable measured.
Luke’s expression turned thoughtful—almost shy.
“So,” Luke said, glancing briefly toward the line of crimson guards, “if I become your Sith apprentice…”
Sidious smiled.
“…would I be allowed to marry your Emperor’s Hand?”
The throne room froze.
For a fraction of a second—an infinitesimal, impossible fraction—Darth Sidious did not understand what he had just heard.
Then the words processed.
The Force rippled.
The Royal Guards stiffened, armor plates shifting almost imperceptibly.
Several Imperial officers watching from observation alcoves stared openly, mouths slack.
Vader’s breathing spiked sharply.
Sidious felt something very rare bloom in his chest.
Not anger.
Not yet.
Disbelief.
“My… Hand,” Sidious repeated slowly.
Luke nodded earnestly.
“Yes,” Luke said. “She seems very competent. Very intimidating. Honestly, that’s kind of my type.”
A soft, strangled sound escaped from somewhere near Yoda. Obi-Wan looked like he might pass out.
Sidious turned his gaze—slowly, deliberately—to Mara Jade.
She stood exactly where she had been ordered to stand. Perfect posture. Perfect stillness. Eyes lowered in deference.
The picture of obedience.
Sidious searched her mind.
He found loyalty.
He found discipline.
He found carefully curated eagerness to serve.
And beneath it all—
Something else.
Something he had never noticed before.
Not rebellion.
Not fear.
Choice.
Sidious’s fingers tightened on the armrests.
Luke continued, undeterred.
“I mean,” Luke said conversationally, “I assume Sith apprentices are allowed to marry. You’re big on passion, right? And commitment. And dramatic life choices.”
Sidious’s smile became thin.
“My Hand,” he said, voice like frost. “Is not a perk.”
Luke blinked. “Oh. Okay. So that’s a no?”
Mara did not move.
Inside, she was vibrating with barely contained laughter and something sharper, brighter, far more dangerous.
Sidious felt it now.
That wrongness.
That subtle misalignment in the Force.
His gaze snapped back to Luke.
“You dare speak of my servant as if she were yours to claim,” Sidious hissed.
Luke shrugged apologetically.
“I’m just asking,” he said. “Transparency is important in a healthy master-apprentice relationship.”
Sidious’s patience—centuries of it—creaked.
Luke raised his hand again, hastily.
“Oh! Sorry—sorry. That was question one.”
The Emperor’s eye twitched harder.
“There is… another?” Sidious asked.
Luke smiled brightly.
“Yes.”
Sidious leaned back, folding his hands together, forcing calm back into his posture through sheer will.
“Ask,” he said.
Luke studied him.
Really studied him.
From the pallid, deeply lined skin.
To the yellowed eyes sunk deep into shadow.
To the unnatural way the dark side clung to him like rot disguised as power.
Luke tilted his head.
“Does becoming a Sith make you look like that,” Luke asked politely, “or is that just… a you thing?”
The silence that followed was not empty.
It was charged.
Sidious felt the dark side surge violently, no longer smooth, no longer elegant—raw, offended, furious.
For the first time in decades, someone had not just resisted him.
They had ridiculed him.
Not behind his back.
Not in whispers.
To his face.
In his throne room.
Before his apprentice.
Before his guards.
Before the galaxy.
Sidious felt something snap.
“You—” he began.
Luke, sensing danger at last, added helpfully, “I’m just asking because I moisturize, and I’d hate for that effort to go to waste.”
That was it.
The dark side exploded.
Sidious surged to his feet, lightning already screaming from his hands, power tearing through the air with a shriek of hatred.
“ENOUGH!”
The first bolt leapt—
And did not strike Luke.
Because Mara Jade moved.
She moved faster than thought, faster than betrayal, faster than Sidious’s certainty.
In one fluid motion, she stepped out of formation, crimson guards reacting too slowly, too late.
She turned.
Ignited her lightsaber.
Blue light flooded the throne room.
Sidious recoiled half a step in shock.
“MARA—”
She crossed the distance to Luke in three strides and grabbed him by the front of his robes.
Before anyone could react—
She kissed him.
Not gently.
Not hesitantly.
But fiercely, joyously, like someone who had waited years for permission she no longer needed.
The Force roared.
Luke froze for half a second—then laughed softly into the kiss and kissed her back.
Vader staggered.
Several Royal Guards took an involuntary step backward.
Imperial officers shouted in confusion.
Sidious screamed.
“TRAITOR!”
Mara broke the kiss just long enough to smirk at the Emperor.
“Yeah,” she said. “About that.”
Luke grinned at her.
“So,” Luke said brightly, “I’m guessing that answers question one.”
Mara snorted. “Definitely.”
Sidious unleashed lightning in a blind, furious storm.
The throne room erupted.
Yoda’s cane struck the floor—
Obi-Wan ignited his blade—
Luke stepped forward, green lightsaber flashing to life as Mara fell into step beside him, perfectly aligned, perfectly balanced.
The Emperor’s scream echoed through the chamber, a sound of rage and disbelief and something dangerously close to fear.
The battle had begun.
And for the first time in his long, cruel reign, Darth Sidious realized—
This was not a seduction.
It was an execution that had been delayed only long enough for him to be humiliated first.
The Sound of the World Breaking
Darth Vader had stood in that throne room for decades.
He had knelt there. He had watched others kneel there. He had watched worlds die there—sometimes with a word, sometimes with a gesture, sometimes with a smile that never reached his Master’s eyes.
He had believed there were no surprises left.
Then Luke Skywalker asked if he could marry the Emperor’s Hand.
Vader’s breathing stuttered.
Not enough to alert the Guards. Not enough to trigger alarms. Just enough that Vader felt it—an ugly hitch in a system that prided itself on absolute control.
For a fraction of a second, Vader was certain he had misheard.
That the words had been distorted by the acoustics of the chamber. That his own internal noise—memory, fear, the lingering echo of that impossible light—had scrambled meaning.
Then Luke spoke again.
And the meaning became unavoidable.
Vader’s head turned, slowly, inexorably, toward Mara Jade.
The Emperor’s Hand.
The assassin.
The shadow.
The woman whose presence in the Force had once felt like a blade wrapped in silk—sharp, obedient, utterly lethal.
She stood exactly as she always had.
Perfect posture.
Perfect stillness.
The image of loyalty.
And for the first time since he had met her, Vader looked deeper.
What he felt made something inside him lurch.
Not darkness.
Not hunger.
Choice.
Mara Jade was not coiled around the Emperor’s will.
She was waiting.
Vader’s mind raced.
This was wrong. This was impossible. The Emperor did not make mistakes like this. He did not allow betrayal to stand at his shoulder.
And yet Luke had felt it.
Had sensed something Vader had not dared to consider.
That alone unsettled him.

When Luke asked the second question—
about whether becoming a Sith would make him look like the Emperor—
Vader felt something truly unfamiliar ripple through him.
A sharp, alien impulse that had nothing to do with rage.
Horror.
Not at Luke.
At the truth in the question.
Vader had never allowed himself to look directly at what the dark side had done to Sidious. He had accepted the transformation as proof of power. A cost paid willingly.
But hearing it framed so simply—
So casually—
Stripped of mystique.
Stripped of reverence.
Turned into a punchline.
Vader felt the dark side shudder.
He felt his Master’s fury surge—not elegant, not measured, but raw and wounded.
The Force screamed.
And Vader knew—
This was the moment.
The moment where everything broke.

Sidious rose.
Lightning leapt.
The throne room detonated in power—
And Mara Jade moved.
Vader had fought alongside her before. He knew her speed. Her precision.
This was faster.
This was not an assassin executing a command.
This was someone choosing.
She stepped out of formation as if the Royal Guards were statues instead of elite warriors. She ignited her saber—
A familiar blue of a saber long forgotten.
The color struck Vader like a physical blow.
Not red.
Never red.
Blue meant Jedi.
Blue meant balance.
Blue meant—
The past. His past.
She crossed the distance to Luke and kissed him.
The Force erupted.
Vader staggered back a half-step before he could stop himself.
The kiss was not tentative.
It was not secretive.
It was not afraid.
It was a declaration.
In that instant, something deep inside Vader—something buried beneath armor and pain and decades of obedience—recognized it.
Love.
Not the desperate, choking terror he had wrapped around Padmé.
Not the possession he had mistaken for devotion.
This was love with its feet planted firmly in the present.
Love that did not beg.
Love that did not kneel.
The Force responded like a living thing finally allowed to breathe.
Vader’s mind reeled.
Mara Jade Skywalker.
The name clicked into place with terrifying clarity.
Skywalker.
The realization hit him harder than any blade ever had.
The Emperor screamed.
“TRAITOR!”
Lightning tore across the chamber, wild and unfocused.
Vader did not move.
He could not.
Because something inside him was screaming louder than the lightning.
