Chapter Text
When it all came to an end, it was just him and Knives left. They weren’t alone, nor safe, but it was the two of them, as always.
“End it,” Vash had told him. “Won’t you just end it here, Knives? Look around you. All the answers are clear. There is absolutely no more reason for us to fight.”
And Knives had rebelled against it, of course. Desperately tried to attack him, asked him to kill him, yelled nothing words at him. And there’s so much more Vash didn’t have time to say. So much.
I hate you.
I missed you.
You took away my brother.
You’re still my brother.
You’ve hurt me enough!
You’re a coward, you just want out now that you’ve lost.
You’re selfish, and scared, and I see through you.
Please let us be brothers again.
I’ll never forgive you.
I’ve forgiven you already.
Please end this, please don’t hurt me any more.
Do you remember the big tree in the geodome?
Do you remember when things weren’t like this?
I’m tired, Knives.
Aren’t you tired too?
Won’t you just listen to me for once?
Please.
Please.
When wings sprout from his back and carry them away from Chronica’s attack, and Knives yells at him but still sprouts his own to support them as they fly, he wishes he had held on tighter. He wishes he had said anything. He wishes they could’ve had a normal conversation, just once, just once.
Vash misses his brother terribly. He almost always has, but now it’s… different. Now he’s alone. Knives built his own path with his own hands, and he left him alone. How sad is it, to have lost the only being who he could’ve asked “do you remember when…” He had always been different from humans, but not one of a kind. And now he was. The nightmare was over, but so was everything else. And it just left a lack. It took more than it gave.
His blank ticket awaits him, truly and absolutely.
And a cliff side fell on the tracks behind him. Some carts of the train remained blocked behind the rocks. And he moved on, going further and further, without them. Knives, Rem, Wolfwood, and so many more. They stayed behind, and he moves on. Alone for now, but maybe not forever. Maybe… who knows what life awaits.
